New York, Thursday,-January 80. The Herald’* special from Naples to January 29 via London 35, says the eruption rf Mount Vesuvius, which has continued with greater or less intensity since Us occurrence tu the past year has culminated, If I may so term It, terminated In a very fatal catastrophe yesterday. The side of Mount Vesuvius lying opposite to the gate Costello, makes one of the fortlHcatlons of this city. This side, botween the royal palace and the sea, fell, tumbling outward. The detached portion burled several bouse* built in the vicinity, and overwhelmed carriages and other conveyances passing on the highway at the moment. The scene Is one of melancholy and ruin. Tho road running in the neighborhood of the volcano is tilled with rocks and earth, which formed part of tho mountain. This extrordlnary event has been attended with considerable loss of lite, but the number of parsons killed bss not been ascertained. The Herald'* Washington special says, It Is reported and pretty generally believed, that the President ts determined to veto the bill suspending the further contraction of the currency, oo the ground that it ts a wide dopar lure from the road to specie payment, and as an advocate of a speedy resumption of specie payment, he can not give hi* consent to It. He believes tt would bo highly injurious to tho welfare of tho country at largo for this hill to become a law. Judge Black has returfUd to this city; be had a consult itton with Governor Jenkins, rf Oeorgla.
