The Northebn Monthly.—There baa been laid on our table a copy of the Northern Monthly for January, and an examination of ito pages shows that this new ventare la tho world of political literature has token a froth and hopeful start. Harriet Prescott Bpofford begins a serial story, the January portion of which, is a magnificent prose poem. An article upon Cbarlee Dlcklns In America reveals a keen and terrible pen, and although the views of the writer will call out cntlctim, they will alio command attention. Other contributors are Wirt Sikes, who tells us all “About Philadelphia^ Mr. Tufto, who analyses the power and the style of three eminent metropolitan clergyman, Beeeher, Chapin and Duryea, Harriet McEwen Kimball, whose poem “Befriended,” Is' a gem; and sevenl other writers las* known.but thoroughly able. The editorial department ha* features which distinguish It from the other magastnes, and its literary matter la worked up In a quite novel way. It Is published by the New Jersey Literary Union, and Is for sale by all news
