Fair GBOnrua—In the yur 1860, the State Board of Agriculture, finding that the old military park-wool of the canal was too •mall for holding fain, determined to procure more eligible and spacious grounds. The matter wu agitated for mom time, and finally the managers of the railrooda centering here, purchased the grounds north of the city. since commonly ktown as Comp Morton, and leased them to the board of Agriculture on condition that tbs Board ahould fit them up and bold fair* there at least eight years out of ten. But one fair woa held there, however, before the commencment of tbe war, and after the grounds were used as a camp and rebel prison they were greatly Injured, the fine shade trees betng cut down, tbe ground dug up, etc. It was also found that they were not easy ol access, no railroad running within less than half a mile. The latter difficulty ha* now been obviated by the building of tbe street m railway, and since the close of tbe war the /^rounds have been greatly improved. The railroad companies now propose to donate the grounds to the State Board, provided they will release them from those claims and will purchase grounds on some one of their llnea of railway near tbe city, to be tltted up and used hereafter. The State Board of Agriculture do not feel disposed to move hastily In the matter, as the present grounds answer their purpose very well, and the rent costs them nothing under the contract. They will probably look at least for a purchaser at a good price for the old grounds, which, In the present condition of financial affairs, may not be so readily found, before accepting the proposition. A meeting of the Railway Board Is appointed for the RUh of February, to receive, if ready, an answer to this proposition and act upon it. But wherever the next fair may be hel J whether upoa new grounds or the old ones, the Board Intend to prepare tor it In the most handsome manner, and wlii make the best possible provision for future fairs. Mr. O. F. May hew, Assistant Secretary, is now drafting plans for the balls, which will be commenced a> soon as the location is definitely determined. For Floral Hall it Is proposed to erect a.circular building, eighty feet in diameter, sixteen feet in bight at the side*, and thirty at the center. A very large pyramid <f shelves will be erected in the center for the flowers, while shelves will bo arranged around tbs outside for tbe fruits, etc. It is Intended that these shelves shall furnish two thousand square feet of room. Fine Art Hall will be after the same pattern, and tbe same size. The paintings and other articles will bo arranged uruund the outside, while the center will be occupied with a circular platform, forty feet In diameter, for the accommocatlon of musical Instruments, etc., leaving a passage way

of sixteen feet around it.

An amphitheater will he forty feet In width by three hundred,at lesst, in length. It will 'will be fitted up with thirteen or fourteen scats extending the whole length, affording accommodations for at least twenty-five hundred people, while a passage way of six or eight feet will be left in tbe rear. Beneath this there will be twenty-four booths twelve feet in width by thirteen in bight, and running back, of course, the full width of the building. Tbe various mechanical halls will be built about thirty by two hundred feet In

size, in the usual form.

Aiiruts.—John Brennan, a man who attempted to kill John Galloway, the night liefore the October elections, was arrested by Meuleuant Bray and Officer Bolan yesterday aDernoon on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. Brannon, after committing the crime, tied, and the police have never been able to lay hands upon him until yesterday, when he waa caught skulking about the

city.

I.lcutenant Brsy and Officers Hrunnemsn, Bennett and John Bueer, arrested a lot of chicken and clothes line tblevesTursday night, ufliecr lirunnoman has been on the watch for midic time for tbe chicken thieves, who com mtt depredations nightly, and has succeeded in unearthing several of the guilty parties. Bob White, who Is black, and Liz. Taylor, a white woman who lives with him, were arrested In one place; at another, two mokes, each rejoicing In tbe classic name of George WaNhlngton, John Martin and Hugh Jordan. O;io of thu namesakes of the father of bis country was Indicted for stealing clothes sev. > r»l days since. Molly Howell, a white woman a bn lives with Nam Johnson, tbe African, uho stabbed Robb, the other night, was also >rre.-UU and she and her liege pine together In (ho same prison. Tbo Washingtons were caught in the act of picking fowls, stolsn only a low minutes bifnre. They vainly attempted to conceal tbe proofs of their guilt, by hustling Iho naked chickens into the bed, but it was too lute, and the probability is that Marion county will be entitled to a froth deleg tlon In tbe Northern prison.

HJCTThe dull) Untou prayer meeting held gt tbe rooms of tbo Young Alcti’s Cbrlitiuu Association, was marked, yesterday morning, by increased numbers iu attendance and increased interest In the exercises. The meeting will bo lod this morning by Air. Theodore Huber. KIT'Sonio additional contributions to the Jail Library were sent to the rooms of the Young Alen’s Christian Association yesterday. This litrary is kept iu a box In the jail ofilcc. A cheap, substantial book-case Is needed. The means are uNo needed by which to procure It. Bath House.— the now Merldluu street bath rooms, under Til ford’s building, are now fitted up and opened to the public, in the arrangement of these rooms no pains have been spared to make them just what they should lie—mat, comfortable and commodious. Hot,cold and sca water baths sffordod at all times, In tbo best inunner and on the most reasonable terms.

FLAVIRO Mill.—Aa will b« seen by refer•nos to an advertisement in another column, the Builders’ sad Manufacturer,’ Association, located at No. 2*6 North Delaware street, are now prepared to furnish carpenters and builders with all kinds of assb, doors, blinds, mouldings, etc. Tb«y make a specialty ol g’.azed window sash, and are tbe only parties in tn .ity who do that kind of work. Tbe rip saw in their mill, for cutting bridge and other long timber, Is anew invention and the only one in the place. Criminal Court.—Robert and Johanna Turby ville were tried In the Criminal Court yesterday for assault and battery with intent to kill, and were acquitted. Tne offense charged grew out of a shooting scrape last November, In which Charles Rifle was wound* ed. The defense is that Rifle with others was cogaged in a riot, and attempted to break into the Turbyvlile house. The case of State r«. Charles G. Tyner, (or grand larceny is now in progress. Tyner, who was a porter in tbe stora of Hoakit A Co., waa detected stealing whisky a few weeks

since.

Something New. — Randall, the oyster man, has introduced a new feature into the oyster trade of the city. He has fitted up • red wagon, on which appears, New York Oyster House, N. A. Randall, No. 31 South Illinois street, with which he proposes te deliver oysters to families in any part of the city in quantities to suit, from one dozni upwards In order to know who want oysters a red erfrd is left at the houses of ail who desire It, and when this sign la hung out It b an Indication that oysters are needed. This plan saves the trouble of sending orders or the wagon slopping to ascertain if the bivalves ore wanted. The Saddle Rock oyater* that Randall lurDishes ctti’t be excelled. — ^ — - — Wbigbt'8 Tar Syrup.—YVe call tbs attention of our readers to the advertisement of Wright’s Tar Syrup In another column. It is claimed for this medicine Chat it Is composed of ingredients which reach the seat of the disease immediately and produce almost instantaneous relief. It is highly recommended by some of our own dtlsens, a noticeable tact, as the majority of medicines offered to the public, have to go away from home to secure favorable opinions and rccommeuda

tlons.

FN-rorxTER WITH Foot Pads.—On Friday night, while a man named Keeling was going out of the <'ity on Iho National road, when just beyond Pogue’s run ho wss stopped by three men, who ordered him to hand out his money. Instead of delivering, he drew a revolver and lired, wounding ono of the ruffians in the breast. The other two fled, leaving tbcireomrade lying on tbe ground, while Keeling went for assistance. Failing to find It at tbe Ur^t house, ho went to tho next, and upon returning to the spot where tbe affray Occurred, found wagon and Dot tracks and blood in the snow, hut tbe man was gone, and had evidently been hauled away. This Is the story which Keeling tells, but there is a disposition In well Informed quarters to believe that the encounter only had an exlsteneo in his own brain, ami as the blood stains are accounted for in a very practical manner, it is probable that such is the case If, bowsver, he did shoot a man, be deserves tube thanked, and if every body else would do tbe same thing, highway robbery would be more a matter ol romance than reality. Nr.w counterfeits.—The following new counterfeits have, within a short time, uide their appearance: 10s, on the Croton National Hank, New York city, arc In circulation. Tens on the First National Bank of New York city, arc In circulation. Fives, on tbs National Union Bank of Klnderhook, New York. Tbs clouds above the female have a scratchy appearance; tho shading under the words‘’National Union Bank” are course and irregular. The paper is of a bluish tint. Tbe engraving on the back is coarse. Tens on the American National Bank, New York city, are in elrculatlon. The signatures are printed and poor ly done, ami the number is blotched, Tne engraving Is much better then that on the counterfeit ot the Flour City Hank of Rochester. Fives on People*' National Bank, Jackson Michigan, are In circulation. It is a poor affair, both as regards ^printing and paper; e'ill the Imitation Is .close and may deceive Twenties on the First National Bank of Portland, Connecticut. Well calculated to deceive. — ♦ — — Dfmochatk: National Convention. meeting is called for to-night, at tho Hates House, to make arrangements for securing the holding of tbe National Democratic Convention in this city. As this movement is intend ed to advance tho Interests of the city generally, all citizens are invited to partielpate In it, without reference to party affiliations. If money sufficient can b« raised to erect a suitable building for the meeting* of of the conveetlon, and such other accommodations as will bo required, there Is hope that Indianapolis will bo selected, and we trust there will be sulUcIsnt liberality on the part of our citizens to secure it, especially a* the bench ti to be derived from it will be twenty (old more than all the outlays. Other cities are making vigorous efforts to secure the location, and there is no reason why Indianapolis should not strive for the coveted honor with every pr< s. pect of success, for no other location can afford equal lacllR&s for access from nil parts of the country. Metropolitan Theater.—Mr. Frank Mayo sustained tho character of Jack Cade In tho play of that name , very much to the satisfaction of tbe audience, last night. His acting Is perfectly natural, there is no signs of constraint, and he seems to thoroughly lose bis identity in tho character he assumes. Jack Cade Is, In our opinion, a part which does not give Mr. Mayo an opportunity to display his talents. He makes the most of it, however, and the oc«ne where he learns of tbe killing of Clifford by Marianne, brings into play hN full power. Ho was miserably supported by tho company, who acted very much as though they had never hoard of tbs drama before, and had no earthly conception of the plot or of the charactere of the persons figuring in it. To-night tbe Lady of Lyons will be played.*-
