L. M. Hanna, 1 \V. S. 8wicnukl, ^ Committee. C. u. DnBitt LEW,) Mktrpodi.itAN Theater —The announcement that Bdlwer’s great tragedy of Riche, lieu would be played should have been aufflcient to have crowded the theater, last night, even had the cast been an Indifferent one. Mrs. Lander’s engagement waa such a anccer* that wo had hoped the lovers of the legitimate druma would have attended during the present week, especially when so brilliantly inaugurated by Mr. Mayo’s rendition of Hamlet. Poo many persons are continually decrying theaters because they do not produce the legitimate drama, and yet, when standard plays are brought out, tbe very same people will not attend. The ultimate object of a theatre, as ii the case with everything else, is to make money, and If legitimate plsys won’t pay, and clap-trap sensational, burlesque plsys will, then tho manager Is justified in giving tbe latter entirely, and the people should say nothing about . The entertainment laat Bight was excellent and we are sorry there were act more there to enjoy It. Mr. Mayo’* conception of tbe character of Cardinal Richelieu la In most respects truthful, while hi* rendition. Is very Impressive. He ha* more originality than any tragedian who has ever visited this city. Ula impersonation differ* In many respects from tho time honored stage Idea of Richelieu, and evinces great study rad careful preparation. The whole pertormance was chaste and elegant. A better one Is not often enjoyed at tbe Metropolitan. Messrs. Breyer and Foster, and Miss Kate Fletcher deserve particular mention for the able manner in which they sustained their respective parts. To-night Jack Cade will be played. Light, More Light.—We trust that the proposition which was Introduced at tha laat meeting of the City Council, to extinguish all airoet lamps at midnight, excepting thoae ou Washington street, will ba promptly voted down. Such * meoaur* would only have a tendency to Increase crime; burglar* would have bolter opportunities to prosecute their vtltsluou* labors, and foot pads and garroters could waylay passengers on almost any atreat wtm Impunity. Tnere la no doubt that tbe presence of tho light* prevent* a great deal of crime, and tho saving of gas effected would Le counterbalanced ten time* over by tho cost of capturing, prosecuting and maintaining criminals, to say nothing of the value of property that might be stolen. Virtue has no more UUclent ally than light, and la a city like Indtenapjlla, where the police force is so small, that no matter how vigilant the officer* may be, Ills impossible for them to wholly prarent crime, every street should, If poselble, be iighc.d aud the lamps kept burning durlrg all the dark hours. If tbe measure intro duced should be adopted, our police force, which, In point of excellence, will compa • with that of any city In the country, will nave more work than can bo easily attended to, and our citizen* will have another Ulustrat un of tho plan of saving at tbe splggot and losing at the bung hole. The Snow. -The Herald has heard of the thirty-two snows that the "poor Indian” has propnesied will take plfca this winter, and it Is undertaklag to tally them; but It hot only five notches on the stick yet. There were two bona fide snows yesterday, rad there ha* been fully ten since winter began. Give Mr. Lo a fair chance.—Evening Commercial. We believe _ln giving everybody s fair c iance, and ;bava no disposition to axclude Mr. Lo. He promised thirty-three, not thirtytwo, deep snows. Hot Utile gusts, a few flakes scattered hare and then whitening nothing, and incommoding or gratifying nobody, but deep heavy anows, detaining railroad trains and street cars, bringing out the sletgtw, and giving the cbllren loU of fUn. If tbo "poor Indian'’ proposed to do the square thing, U is time for him to "get up and dust” or snow, whichever you like. Important Rcvx.nub Cask. -The trans'er »f tho Indianapolis and Lifajette Railroad to the Indlanapolia and Cincinnati Ballroad has created a good deal of trouble at various time*. First, ao Iqjunction forbidding the sale wa* procured in tbe United State* Court, and then a perpetual itaao was mada which virtually amounted to a sale. When the leaae waa made tho revenue officers claimed taxaa to ths amount of 9100,000 on the trrasaction ss s bon* fide sale. The railroad msn refused to pay It, on the ground that It was not a sale, but a transfr I n the nature of a lease. The matter has bt’a brought before the Bureau (f Internal Revenue st Washington, end tbsosis (■ now pending. Tb# decision will probably be announced In a few day*.
