There being no further business to transact, the convent) on anjourned. Joseph W. Nichol, Chairman. W. H. Hasklton, Secretory. The Metropolitan.—With no expectation of being more than ordinarily entertained, and simply because wc had no place else to go, we strolled Into the theater Saturday night, just to see how many people were present, and, perhaps, to sit through the first act of “ Lucretia Borgia”—not a very cheerful play, but, along with “ La Tour de Nesle,” and “ The Snrgeon of Paris,” a good card for Saturday night. We were agreeably disappointed m the manner of Its presentation, and sat tbe performance through without becoming restive. Miss Phillips we have known as an excellent “old woman,” but we must confess that we were not prepared to witness so good a rendition of “ Lucretia” as that with which she favored the audience. We have seen many a star who couldn’t do it as well, by several points. Tbe audience were delighted with Miss P.’s “ Lucretia,” and favored her with the compliment so seldom extended to a stock performer, of two calls before the curtain. Mr Lingbam, as “Guaro,” was a little ahead of his usual uniform excellence, especially in the latter part ol the piece, and shared with Miss P. the plaudits of the delighted audience. And we can not close this notice without saying a good word for Mr. Breyer, whose “Gubetta” was excellent. Mr. White had a rather difficult time of it in representing “Geppo,” but got along admirably, only many of the audience would insist on laughing where tbe laugh didn’t come In, just because White is the fuuny man. We don’t pretend, however, to bold Mr. White responsible for this, although It Is his fault that be Is such a favorite with the people. Altogether it was a very creditable performance, and gives conclusive evidence that the company can entertain an audience, evea when there are no stars In the
firmament.
— — 5r3S” In the case cf the City vs. Anna Chambers, of which mention has been made so frequently, Judge Scott gave Lis opinion on Saturday morning against tbe city, and the defendant was discharged. The defendent bad been Indicted for keeping a house of ill fame, and her defense was that the city ordinance providing for the punishment of offenses against public decency was not valid on account of non-publication. It was shown by the city attorney that the ordinance had been properly passed by the Council, but neither party introduced evidence as to the proper publication of tho same; each side holding that tbe burden of proof laid with the other, Judge Scott decided that it was necessary for the city attorney to produce the proof of publication as such proof. It was supposed to be kept on file in tbe public office whore the citizens could have access to It. The case will probably be appealed. Although tbe city was beaten In this particular case, the validity of the ordinance Is not effected, and it will probably be tested sgain in a short time, and then the proof of publication will bo presented. Until the ordinance is decided invalid, it will not be expedient for those who have been punished under it to prosecute for damage against the city. Such a course might not result in any pecuniary
benefit.

'Since that time her parents and friends, who are all eminently respectable, have made strenuous efforts to discover her whereabouts, but met with no success until last Saturday, when she was discovered >t the residence of Professor Thrasher, of the Northwestern Christian University, where she had been employed as a servant from the day of her arrival In thla city. In fact, from tho date of her leaving him. She la a young and delicate girl, quite unaccustomed to labor of any kind, and it la difficult to account for this romantic episode. It is certain, however, that her conduct has been in ail respects conaiatont with propriety, except Jo the manner of her leaving a good home and kind parents. She returned to the parental residence on Saturday evening, apparently well pleased to resume her proper
station.
An item In the Evcmrj Commercial, of Saturday, Is calculated to do tbe young lady and her friends injustice, by creating an impression for which thore la no foundation in tbe facta of the case. Is StiHaUtUa Aeccssaiy? This question is practically answered in the affirmative by thousands of physicians every day Sometimes they prescribe the ordinary forms of alcohol; sometimes tinctures which are simply Inferior alcohol, more or less medicated; but no small proportion of the faculty give the preference to HOSTETTER’S STOMACH BITTERS, as the most carefully prepared medicinal stimulant at present known. It is impossible for prejudice itself to be blind to the marked success with which this extraordinary tonic and alterative has been administered in cases of DYarxrsia during the last twentv years. If it were possible to canvass the whole country for cases in which it had effected a cure of this obstinate and agonizing disease, they would number millions. No wonder, then, that it has become a standaed msdioim in every State, city, town and village in the United States, and that names, the most distinguished in literature, art and science, are the vouchers for its remarkable properties. The immense manufactory at Pittsburgh, with its extensive storehouses, is the largest establishment of the kind in the country, and, probably, in the world. The amount of manual labor employed in the preparation of the Bitters, to say nothing of the steam driven machinery, is greater than that of any other proprietary medicine establishment on this continent, and, by the blessing of Providence, the beneficial results of thia unequaled tonic and alterative are co-extendve with its continually increasing sales. nov26 deod w2w
