True copy from tbe records of the Lodge. Attest: - B. C. Darbow, W. M. Charles Fisher, Secretary. Mail Robbery.—In our Issue of yesterday, we alluded to the arrest of a young man at Evansville on a charge of mail robbery. At that time the facts of tbe case had not transpired, but we are now permitted to lay them before our readers. Tbe postmaster of Evansville and Lis assistant discovered, several weeks age, that letters known to have come to the office mysteriously disappeared, and after a time fragments of letters were found in an out house. Suspicion fell upon a young man named Cicero Buchanan, who hsd been a clerk In tbe office for a short time, and having been sworn, bad the freedom of the premises. It was noticed that be came in quite frequently, and, after remaining a short time, would pass out back. Special Mall Agent Phillips being acquainted with the circumstances advised that ho be followed oat, and, accordingly, the next time he came through, tbe postmaster did so, and, breaking open tbe door of a privy, found him opening letters which he had picked up as bo passed througb. He made no attempt to brazen the matter out, but made a clean breast of tbe whole transaction. It was tbe old story. He bad become Involved In debt and was ashamed to apply to bis father for assistance, and, temptation assailing him, ho yielded. Tbe crime once committed, was repeated again and again, although he states that the whole amount taken was but twenty-eight dollars. The young man, or boy rather, for he is but seventeen years of age, is of a frank, generous nature, and has always borne aa excellent eharaclcr, standing higher, indeed, than most persons of bis age. Tho sudden detection of bis crime seems almost to have overwhelmed him, and tbe sorrowful lesson be la now learning of tbe evil of sin and Us bitter fruits, will do him more good than any punishment which could be meted out to him. It Is •ad that one giving so much promise of good should fall so early in life, and bring disgrace and sorrow to a happy family; but if to takes heed to lesson he may yet be a good and useful man. No action has yet 1 em taken in tbe case, Tbe young ra;.n came here of his own accord, not having been arrested. What may be the issue we do not know, but a reproof from the court, and tbe admonition, "go and sin no more,” would probably be of more effect than Imprisonment for any term. AN Improved Jail.—Yesterday morning we visited tbe manufacturing establishment of B. F. Haugb &, Co., at No. 74 South Pennsylvania street, and there saw a patent jail, built wholly of iron, and designed for Princeton, Gibson county. This jail contains six cells, surrounded by an iron railing, leaving a passage between it and tbe cells, nearly four feet wide, and so arranged that the cell doors can be locked or unlocked at any time without the jailer going to them, thus affordieg him complete proteciion. Each cell is provided with two beds, so arranged that they can be •lung to tbe wall during tbe day, and give greater room. If at any ttme it should be found desirable to Increase tbe espaetty of the jail, another aet of eells can be constructed on top of these, and the machinery fastening and unfastening the doors, arranged without extra expense. Communicating with the Isdcsure about tha cells Is a door, which ts opened by moving a lever In an outer room, allowing the jailor to attend to the wants of prisoners without ever going near them. Tbe cells, with the passage around, occupy a space twenty-one feet square, in which twelve prisoners can be kept, with as much comfort aa In any jail. This jail la the latest and moot improved style of prison, and must commend itself to all examining ft aa far superior to the common stone affairs. Aside from the security and Impossibility of escape. It Is far lew expensive than ordinary jails, for the amount of room can be Increased at any time, while In other prisons new ones must be built. With tbla pattern, officers of jails can never be sobjected to tbe assaults of vicious prisoners, and a more perfect ventilation la secured. ||County commissioners, or those authorized to build jails, will commit a great error if they fall to examine this prison, and thus' make aura ef all the improvements which may be added. The firm of B. F. Haugh A Co. have the best moebinery for doing this style of work, and are perfectly reliable in every point, as a host of references from tbe best men in the Stole will abundant-

ly testify.

tST We have always been radically oppoeed to what Is kaown as Lynch law, or the summary execution of punishment by an unauthorized mob. Wo have always thought ft far bettor to let the law take Ita course, even If some guilty ones should eseape. For what says the oM aeaxim "better that ten guilty should escape than one nraoews suffer.” Hence (to use the language of a well known educator) we have always condemned Lynch law, and considered those resorting to It as deserving of punishment themselves. Our opinion, however, has been suddenly changed We have awakened to the fcet that some individuals whom the law will not touch, must be punished severely. Tbe toartlew wretch wb# could aommtt suck an oftoraas the one we shall dte la deserving of death la Ue worst form, and we should smile with scornful gUrt; to see hia htmg to the Circle lamp poet, and r than drawn and ouartcrad. bis bade bnrnwi wn• vv as ananas ans^r j ap\st ss^^Lsa and hfaachra scattered to.the fttr winds.
