J lines E. Shephard, who shot his wife In tliis city last week, and who wae arrested in t uitcrbury, Connecticut, on Monday, reached this city yesterday by tbe half-paet two r. M. train from Norwich. Quite alarge crowd of spectators assembled at tbe depot to see him, «ad the police office wae also crowded. Sbepbird appeared perfectly cool and unconcerned, and boro the scrutiny of tbe curloue crowd w ithout embarrassment. Ho wss arraigned before tbe police court during the afternoon, M. J, McCafferty, Esq., appearing as his co insel. Shephard pleaded not guilty and waived an examination, and was fully committed to await tbe action of tbe grand Jury oa tbe third Monday la December. Jld wae taken tojsll last evening. Sbsphard appears quiet, and eeeme perfectly wiling to converse in regard to tbe murder, and does not manifest any particular emotion. He says It Is all tbe work nr hte wife's mother and family, who poisoned bie Wife's fiNM against him and separated them. He said Ito killed her because be loved ber more tfea* Ms own life; that ber friend* would not lot kar live with him, and rather than seeker m fie possession, of another be killed ber. Hts intention was If be bed found ber alone, to kill her and lay down beside ber, with ber arm* around bun, and shoot himself; but, said be, “It would have done no good; ber friends would not let roe sleep in tbe same grave wteh her If I had; they spite me to much for that, so it makes no difference.” He expresses regret that be did not kill blmself Instead of going away after tbe murder. He says be bad never spoken a bard word to bis wife, and has always supported ber when he had means, and that she left him against ber own will. He said, “I have done wbat I wanted to to her, and now I suppose tbe law will do wbat it wants to with me.” He Is very severe In his conversation in regard to tbe mother of his wife, spying that when he is dead be will come hack and haunt ber; that she shall have no peace on earth. When told that if be Is bung it can not be for a year after he it convicted, be said, regretfully, “tben she will have a year of peace, but when I am dead I

will haunt her.”

He says that on Friday night, after tbe murder, he walked to Oxford Plain and slept in a saw mill inst below the plain, near where tbe road gix’s under tbe railroad. He ate a little on Saturday morning, at Mr. Wateon’s, In Webster, and slept that nigbt and tbe next in barns. He also ate a little on Saturday morning, but with these two exceptions be bad no food from Friday morning till on Monday after be was arrested. lie bad no definite end In view in traveling, but went first one road

and those v. ho have known him for years say ho Is not “smart." He can be easily Imposed upon, and is usually good natured, but has a subtle spirit at Urn bottom and is inclined to revenge. He was In tbe Fifteenth regiment, and ou his return from the war was married to a woman ivunod Don/ey, from Mtlbury, but left her almo.-t immediately, and subsequently obtained a divorce. He has been married twice to bis victim, and taking all bis matrimonial adventures, has bad out a sorry time of It. He is evidently careless of bis iuture, and has no especial desire to live, but bis course alter the murder, and his conversation and manner give an impression that be bas not firmness enough to take bis own Hie.

From the Milwaukee News. A Wlecanstn Han Walks a HandreA Nines in T wenty-fanr Haars. The trial of pedestrlanlsm power and endurance In which the Yankee Weston is now engsged bas fostered ambition and emulation to no little extent throughout the country. Wisconsin is not without her champion in this regard, one of her sons yesterday demonstrating the possibility of walking one hundred miles in twenty-four hours—a feat which Weston has twite essayed and failed to accomplish. Some two week* since a l»et of me hundred dollarsa side was m.iJe, mid ih. money put up between Jlchse Hasscl and Alfred Wilcox, but of Portage City, Wisconsin, that tbe former would walk from Portngo City to Mil wsukee In twenty-four consecutive hours. Wednesday evening last, at four o'clock, Hassel started on the trip. His friend, Mr. Qordon, and Wilcox, with vlbom he had tbe wager, accompanied him in a buggy. Tbe route token was tbs ordinary wagon road which runs parallel to tbe railroad, and is, we are informed, at no point more than two miles from it. Hassel ate snpper at Fox Lake Junction, and arrived st Horrlcon a little after eleven In tbe evening, where he rested an hour. He tben took up the line of marcb for Milwaukee again; breakfasted at Woodland, dined st Oreenvllle, snd arrived at Milwaukee attwenty minutes past three o’clock, in good condition, winning bis wager easily and having forty minutes to spare. Tbe distance between Portage City sad Milwaukee is ninety-five miles by railroad, and must exceed one hundred by actual measurement of tbe wagon road. It must be set down ae tbe most extraordinary day’s walk on record In tbe West. Hassel Is Welch by birth; about twenty-one years of age; weighs one hundred and thirtyeight pounds, and measure* five feet ten and one-balf Inches In bight. He started on tbe journey without any previous training, beyond moderate exercise token for a few days without a trainer.
