J2TFor tbe last two or three days tbe chain gang has been operating near tbe postoffice. YestenUy afternoon curiosity impelled ua to take a nearer look at that reml-useful and time-honored institution. There were just ten In the gnug, and. If we remember rightly, five were mokes. Of the ten six were ornamented with chains and forty pound balls, which they carried in tbe brad or tsher rusly draggnd after them. All out one .vere stout, hearty men, who looked aa though they could do a bard day’s work and then experience no difficulty in wrestling with their hash. Tbe presence of the balls and chain* Indicated that a majority of them pined for freedom, and it was no less evident that they would continue to pine, for forty pounds is not easily carried away la great baste. We n«ver were on the chain gang and can not, therefore, fully enter Into tbelr feelings; but seemingly tie whole crowd didn't care a cent—their sense of shame was wholly gone. Among them was* grizzly old moks, who brass the earn* name a* the father of bis country, Lewis Washington, a nasty wretch wbo has figured In tbe police court every twelve days on an •voyage for six months. He la tbe husband of n white woman, having married her only n few weeks since, and If he wae knocked SB tto head the community would be better off. We suppose If a man is unfortunate enough to get on the chain gang he doesn’t like to work. But there Is aa old proverb so tba effect that if a man does not work be shall net eat. As the city is compelled to feed there creatures, It Is only fair that they should pay for it, aad for that object the chain gang was founded. In order to treat them a* kindly aa possible the city baa adopted tbe eight hour law, and these impecunious offenders rest two additional hours per day. In view of this, we suggest that they be made to work. As It to now, they make play of it. While the boss’ attention is on one man, the rest are Idle or pretend to b* working very bard, when, in reality, they are doing nothing. If you hire a man to work for you, you expect him to put In tbe whole time, and why should net laborer* for tbe city do tbe same thing? Whoop ’em up, boss! whoop’em up!
