We are advised by a friend of the distinguished gentleman that he will advocate an inflation of the currency to the extent of three hundred million*; the substitution of greenbacks for the national Dank currency; a reduction if the tax upon whisky to one dollar per gallon; the abolition of the revenue tax upon tue productions of mechanics and manufacturers, and a general reduction ol taxee. The wlley Speaker of the Hou*e may not be able to accomplish all these purpose*, but the fact that ho is making an effort to do so, Is a concession that the policy of the radical party has met with a signal rebuke from the people. And Mr. COLFaX is responsible, to a great extent, for the exi-ting condition 01 atfairs. As Speaker of the House be hashaped the character of Its committees, and u is well known that Uo has given the coutro of the most important to tbo representatives of the m inulacturitig and moneyed interest' of the country, when It was In his power to have given at least an equal representation to tbo great agricultural Interests of the West and South, which fce n iiv *e ms anxious to conciliate. Its distinguishing leaturc, and only commendable quality is Us brevity. Hut the few words he did utter show that he has lost none of his egotism, and that demsgogism is <111 his ruling passion. Ills just such a speech as a common hot house politician would make, and is a lit companion to bis previous efforts.—Journal. Such is the sentiment of the organ, but it is only a chronic exhibition of partlxinship. tjuite different was tho expression of one of the prominent, if not the most prominent leader of the Republican party in this SPite. ills estimate of the address of the President was directly the reverse of the Journal. He regarded It as the most sagacious, the most temperate and the most politic speech that Mr. JOHNSON had made since he occupied tho presidential chair. If conli Jencfl In the integrity and Intelligence of the people ; the virtue of Republican institutions ; a detestation of arbitrary power and mllitiry despotism and respect for the constitution, “the symbol of liberty, union, justice and fraternity,’’ framed by a wlae and patriotic ancestry, are only such sentiments that “acommon pot-house politician ^ would u’ler, wc can only say it is unfortunate forthe coun try that men of that character do not rule its districts.

Then we can rely on enough Northern States to insure the election of our man, whoever he may be.” He has here put the whole radical plan of reconstruction into the fewest possible words. Political Items. Wayne County.—The Democracy of this county will meet in Masonic Hall, In Cambridge city, on Saturday, the 14th of December, for the purpose of seleeting delegates to tbe State Convention. —The majority for license In Massachusetts, as represented by the vote for members of the Legislation, will amount to full 23,000. — Official information shows that only 3,500 whites are disfranchised In Virginia. The returns from Wisconsin continue to show gratifying and in some Instances remarkable Democratic gains over the returns In 1665. The latest tlguics give FAiBCiiiLD,Republiean candidate for Governor, a majority of 4,744 over Tallmadge, and the Republican papers of the State concede that the official majority will not exceed 5,000. When It is remembered Hi at In '1865 Fairchild’s majority for Governor was 0,956, the result of the election this year will appear highly satlslactory and encouraging to the Democracy of the country. The proper comparison Is with the vote of 1866, when the radicals carried the State by a majority of over 23,000. The telegraph annouces that Fairchild, the radical nominee for Governor, is elected by about 0,000 majority—a loss of eighteen thousand. Treasurer of State.—We know of no more wormy gentleman to place on the State ticket for treasurer of State than James B. Ryan, Esq.f of Indianapolis. Mr. R. was the candidate for that position last year, and made an energetic and efficient canvaes. He is in every respect worthy of the honor then conterred upon him, and we hope the Democracy will nominate him for tbe position. He is an Irishman, and as a representative man will command the earnese support of the Democracy. By all means give us the energetic, enthusiastic, liberal Ryan for treasurer cf Smle.—Logansport Fharos. The Coming Election and Candidates UPON THK state TICKET.—We notice that our coutemporaric* arc suggesting the names of candidates to be placed upon the State ticket by the eighth of January convention. It is highly important that sound, reliable and available men should be placed before the people for official positions—men whose high character and qualifications will commend • hem to the contideuce of the peopfc'-geoer-ally, for to secure success we must have reruns from the Republican ranks. We have •itard the name cf Cclurel J. J Alexander, of Gwen county, suggested for tho office of Auitor of State. anU we take pleasure in cordi- ■ 11. approving the suggestion. Tbe snn la tbe great arbitrator between the white and the black mao. There are productions necessary to civilized countries that can alone bo cultivated in tropical climates, where tbe wbtte man can not live it exposed to labor In the aun. Thus, such fertile countries as the West Indies and portions of America being without a native population, tho nrgro was originally imported as a slave te fulfil the condition* of a laborer. * * * Sir Samuel concludes ibis branch of tbe subject with these sensible observations: Now, as the negro was originally imported as a laborer, but now refu*es to labor, it U *elf evident that be is a lamentable failure. E'tb<-r he must be compelled to work, by some stringent law against vagrancy, or Uioxp beautiful i.-land* (the British West Indies) that prospered under the conditions of negro forced industry must yield to ruin under negro freedom and idle independence For an exampie of the result look at St. Domingo!
