Why Shake? Why Burn?

The Indiana Weekly Herald

KSTMeteorological reports for the Indianapolis Academy of Medicine, by W. J. Elston,

M. D., meteorological committee: Barom. Therm. Dew ptTh Rain

,j, some time since,as

a substitute teacher in the aecond district school, on Sycamore street, and, two weeks since, rrsularly appointed as a permanent

teacher there, at $400 per annum.

In appearance she Is extraordinarily attractive, with a handsome form, neatly clothed, and a beautiful and expressive face, with dark eyes, long lashes, small, shapely mouth and cheek roses, relieving a pure white face. With this character. Miss Mary C. G—, whose widowed mother lives in the western part of the city, appears her younger sister, of sixteen years—who, up to last Friday, was a pupil In tbe A grade of the school in which her elder sister taught up to that time. Yesterday afternoon, at about four o’clock, both of these young people were taken out of a bouse of ill fame, on Sixth street, east of Sycamore, by

Detective Hazsn and Officer Pettit.

Last Saturday evening they left their mother’s house, under tbe pretext of going to tbe exhibition at Mozart Hall, and never returned. Information of the disappearance being given to the chief of police, diligent search was made throughout all the more prominent bouses of ill fame In the city, but without success, until yesterday afternoon. In tbe chiefs office, both girls passed, without a blush, through tbe ordeal of interlocution, tvlncing throughout a hardihood that seemed very remarkable when it was remembered that they were fresh from a decent home and from tbe associations of the schoolroom. Tbe elder occasionally spoke for both, and in every thing that she said her sister appeared to sustain her. She stated that she bad had enough of the schoolroom, that her mother bad abused her for years, and that she bad taken this step deliberately, and did not intend to retract it. She would not, under any circumstances, go

back to her borne.

Her sister could do so if ahe desired to. Tbe sister appeared to be offended that^a hint of such a desire on her part should be uttered, and finally stated that sbe would follow her elder sister. From tbe chiefs office tbe girl* were taken to tbe office of the school board, where they were confronted by their grayhaired mother. They met her coldly, and responded to her tears and entreaties by reminding her that since tbeir fatber’s death, and up to the hour of their flight, sbe baa abused them, and had frequently said sbe did not carr bow soon tbe elder one left her. The mayor, tbe chief of police, and several others, strongly advised and urged them to yield to their mother’s prayer and remain at home. But they bad no melting mood to exhibit—no tears to shed—no concessions to make. Cold as Icicle, there they sat, before their weeping mother and half a dozen men, and adhered to tbeir terrible choice of a career. They were threatened with the house of refuge. but appeared to understand that their age saved them from that institution. ‘•You must go home or be locked up,” said

the chief.

“Well,” said Mary, quietly rising. “I’m ready to be locked up,” and tbe other echoed her words. And so they were taken down stairs, Into tbe Nintb street station, and locked within tbe private coll, to see what effect that would have upon them; and there they passed the night, while their mother went

home.

In all our experience we have never come upon a sadder case of this kind than this. Their situation gives proof of the need of an Institution wherein such cases can be dealt with for the goodpf tbe unfortunate one. They arc too old to bo sent to the House of Refuge, where they might be reclaimed. Tbe Home of the Friendless will not receive them as unwilling guests. To send them to the Female City Prison as vagrants would be to ruin them yet faster than their own course. So there is nothing left but to discharge them, this morn-

Put these two questions to a man passing through the alterative paroxysms of Fever and Ague, and he will probably reply, “because I can not help myself.’’ But he is mistaken. He can help himself. He need not continne to endure the marrow-search-ing cold and parching heat of intermittent fever unless he chooses. If there Is an established fact in the history of medication.it is this: that HOSTETTEB’S STOMACH BITTERS invariably breaks up the fits of this exhausting disease. Quinine often fails, and whether it fails or not, it is always a dangerous medicine- It stultifies the britin. The Bitters have no such effect Quinine shatters the nervous system. The BITTERS on the other band, arc a glorious nervine; in Met, a specific for nervous ailments. Medicines, as a general rule, are “bad to take.” Not so. this famous vegetable specific. It is m ild and agreeable, not pungeant and nauseating. The liver is always greatly disordered in intermittent and remittent fevers.and this excellent tonic and alterative has antibilioas properties of the highest order. The stimulant employed to diffuse its medicinal virtaes through the organs of the body is perfectly pure, and this can not be said of the spirituous basis of any other tonic. The best advice that can be given to persons residing in malarious regions, or in crowded cities, is to take it a raxvsNTivx of diseases incident in both. Whether used as a protective antidote, or a remedy, it will be found wonderfully efficacious. novl2 deodft w8w

Horae Tails. There is a great deal ot complaint among certain gentlemen that General Grant Is addicted to horse talk. When they wish to get his opinion on reconstruction, he replies by a remark on pedigree, or what Thunder did on the last quarter stretch. When they want to know what he thinks about Sambo, he answers that he believes Dexter several seconds ahead of Mountain Boy, and that he don’t think the latter can close the gap on the for-

mer.

General Grant Is a reticent man. He has Instructed bis subordinates not to talk politics; and, of course, be can not talk politics himself. But we wish to Inquire whether It is not just barely possible that Grant, being a shrewd man, is not, in talking horse, really talking politics, In a covert way, all tbe time? All bis horse talk may be a symbolism In which a sagacious interpreter could read everything relative to Grant’s views and in-

tentions.

The men who arc trying to get opinions from Grant on reconstruction, and receive only horse talk, are, of course, doing this with a view to tbe Presidential election. Te sustain our theory that Grant’s horse talk ia political talk in disguise, we will commence by stating that a horse race and a Presidential race are alike In innumerable particular*. There are a starting point, a home stretch, a winning post, In both. Premising this, let us see how the horse talk may be understood. When an anxious politician salts General Grant whether he will consent to be a candidate, the General will very probably reply that, while tbe time a horse can make depends

largely upon iU *
