JlST'A correspondent inquires whether police officers should not set an example cf respect for the laws and ordinances that It la their duty to enforce? He says that some of those officers were met In drinking places, in violation of the proclamation of the mayor, on the day of the election, and as guests of the the establishments. Perhaps they should set the example referred to, but such D not the custom In these parts. SHBBIFF PABKBK ASSAULTS ISAAC E. Tbe party then came In contact with Ueacral Elliott and Colonel Parker, who at once commenced a tirade of abuse on Mr. Johnson for having voted the Democratic ticket. Mr. Joho-ou replied by telling them that at least tw<> hundred Democratic votes had been kept uut by dosing the polls when they did. At this Juncture Sheriff Parker stepped np and exclaimed, ‘‘Isaac X. The charity might be a worthy one, but tbe principle of giving awky the people’! money to any and every person os corporation waa a bad one. The Whole revenue of the city could eaally be thus disposed of, if all were served alike, and then no one could aee where tt had gone. He preaumed many of the membera had read Oliver Twlat, and if so their faith in optnlona formed by viaitora to Institutions of this character might not be much stronger than bis own. OiinA To-night.—Ws have belore announced that Madame La Grange and Signor Brignoli, with a combination of other stars, would glvo two grand operatic reproaontatlona In this city, and wo can now Inform our readers that tbe representations will take place Ibis (Thursday) and to-morrow evenings at Morrison’s Hall. No singer that has ever visited this country was more highly appreciated or left it with more genuine regreta on the part of our people, than Madame Annn de le Grange It is now eight years since her voice was heard in the United States, and aha now returns to renew her lyrical triumphs of former years throughout the United States, and we sue confident she will bo greeted with tbe same enthusiasm that was everywhere manifested on her former visit. In announcing her departure from Europe to this country, the Now York Herald said: Madame LaGrange’s is the moat powerful lyric name In this country. She never disappointed her audience—abe never failed to gratify their tastes. Thorough in all she attempted, there was no role In her most extensive repertoire to which she did not do full justice. Hence her great value In tbe great opera houses of Europe. Hence it was that her career to greater and greater estimation and distinction that she was crowned as without a rival at the Imperial Court Opera of Brasil, lauded and loaded with honors at Madrid, and made M tbe stare among tbe stars” in Paris. The announcement of her reappearance here will be received with enthusiasm, and she will draw around her all the taste, beauty and culture of the Metropolis. 01 Brignoli it is hardly necessary to speak. He hat been with us so often and so recently, and charmed us all with bis sweet voice so many times that a bare announcement of bla coming Is sufficient to raise the highest and most pleasurable emotions among tbe lovers of the “divine art.’’ Tbe other artistee that compose this troupe are Signora Sartl, Marra Sus Ini and Nicola, the latter as conductor. This evening Don Pasquele Forday—Barber oi Se vllle. Secure your teats at Benham & Co.’s music store. CstvB Irons a Bold I er. Mr. Editor—1 served three years and two months In the war and have an honorable discharge, still my vote waa twice refused by Mr. Loomis. First, tbe number of my house was not correct on the register. After securing an affidavit I was again refused, and it was not until the third attempt that I got to vote. Respectfully, C. Charles Halchxr. Corporal, Seventeenth Indiana Battery. No. 72 Coburn street. ISTThe Journal says we denounced and abused the county commissioners for appointing an extra place for voting in the second district of Center township. This is not so. We objected to their tavorltlsm, and their own action on the day of election in multiplying the voting places in ail tho districts is tbe best evidence that we were right in oar denunciations. Each district should have had three voting places, and that number was necessary to conveniently and promptly poll the entire vote in each of them. E3TMorton, Baker, Colfax and Company did good work for the Democracy in Ohio. Every speech they made lb tbe State added to the Democratic strength. If tbo canvass had continued a short time longer, with such help, Thurman’s majority would have been 25,000, if not more. UT There were over two thousand lees votes caet in this township than there were voters registered. This shows either very liberal registering or eiso that the facilities for voting were Insufficient to poll the entire vote. KjETTbe radicals were bolstroualy Jubulant over their radical majority in this county, but they were dumb as oysters over the glorious Democratic trlumpb in Ohio and t*snnsylvanU. On Djt.—It is rumored that Senator Morton will resign bis seat In tbs Senate, on aceeont of tbe overwhelming defeat of radicalism In Ohio end Pennsylvania. Through Mrs. Bolton first, did we. acrom too river, learn to know her, and wa loved ker so well that her death was to each one of us a psreonal lost. W* shall never lose, thank heaves, the sense

Thus very many wn'e prettily, with abundance of metaphor and melody, bnt the amalhat possible number forcibly and well. 1 would rather be the author of “Infanticide” than half a hundred common poems. With what veslsttess art docs she hurry us through the pitllieia storm, until we feel as If we wanted to gather to onr shelter
and care the poor unfortunate, “Pandering wearily—wearily.”
Her very words are ringing In our ears aa she ravee of the fiends that pursued her. •They followed my path through th» drifted

Taunting, and mocking, aad gibbering low.
There is peace and res* where the cold waves
Far down In the white sand besily.”
And then, as the stars look down on her dreamless sleep, we listen with awe to the anathema that is hurled against the world— the great moon-faced, brassy world—that carries man In its bosom* while it tramples erring
women under lu heels.
“In the penal code of this righteous world, i.irsaisWiiWi the bitter taunt, tbe aarcom hurled With rare unvarying parity. But oyer the monster, maan aml .

We throw the pure mantle of charity.” Mrs. Bolton’s strongest notes are ever when
she takes up tha story of human wrong, whether in the Impassioned strain of “Infanticide” or the later tong of the “Drowned.” The latter U like a picture of Ophelia, or rather, like a painting of the old masters—finished,
startling and suggestive.
She sat alone on a cold gray stone. W here the river made a desolate mean; The sycamore trees stood white aad bare, like sheeted ghosts la the dniky air; A black cloud floated aloeg the sky. And anigot-bird uttered a oUatal cry.
•
But I am not writing a criticism nor making a transcript; and 1 have wandered from my purpose, which Is simply telling the Impression these poems made upon the mlnde of children. When Mrs. Bolton’s book w«g first published, I read it aloud in tho family room. At the dose of the beautiful poem, I was surprised to bear the little boy say: “Read that again. Laura.” 1 looked up. and there be sat at my feet listening intently, while at my elbow, touching me, stood the girl-child, her eyes drinking In the melody as violets the dew. She was a Under household plant, leaning to every member for support, and more Inclined to “ Rock me to sleep ” than any other seng; and he had always looked upon books as a nosh and hindrance to bis childish play. 1 had tried In vain to inUreet him in Diekoas, and had read to him tho Hen and Goat stories ot Barry Gray, but there was something cold aad artificial about them that did not reach him. Like tbe taste for sculpture and oysters, it had to be cultivated. There waa something, however, in Mrs. Bolton’s poems that met his want. He listened to one after another until his sister grew weary, but be was not di p >.Rd to give it up, and said In bis bird-like < :e, tbe sweetest I ever beard—“ Don’t stop reading. Auntie, please. 1 will just He down. I can bear all tbe same.” He threw himself upon the lounge, bis face turned towards me. But the heavy lida kept falling over bis eyes until at length he dropped to sleep, a smile on bts lip. Whether to too music of Setia’s song or “ Paddle your own eanoe,” I hardly know# I rather think it was “ Coming home,” for as I read— And heavily Into that cheerful room. With their neadi uncovered and faces brown. Strong men came out of the night end gloom, And laid two while pine cottns down,” He asked: “ And were they both deed?—both of them?” I knew that be possessed a fine musical esr, but it remained for Mrs. Bolton to develope a taste for poetry, justly inherited from bis father. 1 beard bim say that when be was a boy be would steal off to tbe country with a copy of “ Thomson’s Seasons” In bis pocket, and would study them and read them aloud for the bills and* trees to bear. Now, I bold that what la beautiful and true to nature la sure of recognition by ebildren. They detect what Is low and false as quickly as they read tbe bean in the face. But what I want to say in conclusion Is that no ono can from this writing form any conception of tbe merit of the book. Tbe only way is to procure a copy. Indianapolis, September, 1867. tors. Llmcwla. The New York correspondent of the Louisville Democrat says: Mrs. Lincoln is making a terrible commotion In Black Republican circles here, by her threat to tell all she knows concerning them, if they don’t come forward and supply her with the means of support. Gossip says that tho fiae shawls and other toggery she is now advertising for sale were never purchased by her, but were presents from politicians, who desired to procure her influence while her husband waa President, In obtaining offices for them. Some of these politicians, It is further asserted, are parties who carry their heads loftily in this community, and who are commonly looked upon as the exponents of great moral ideas. Mrs. Lincoln, in private, aaya she does not Intend to be bashful. She Is going to watt awhile, and then, If certain folks don’t do what U right, she Is going to tell all she knows. Tbe newspaper reporters have paid their respects to her in a body, and one of them, I am iaformed, has been authorized to offer her (500 if she will write up a history of her experience and observations behind tbe scenes in the White House, during the Lincoln regiate. I don’t know whether she baa concluded to accept or not; butlf she is inclined to do anything in that line, she could get fire thousand dollars as easy aa five hundred. Bonner, of the Ledger, stands ready to make that offer; so does Bennett, of the Herald. A Clerical Scoundrel Confesses.—The vHUan, Rev. Mr. Howe—not Sereno-late pastor of tbo Baptist Church la Stetson, Maine, scented of the seduction of a member of hie flock, a young, fatherless girl, baa made verbal confession of bis guilt to several citizens of that vicinity. He also made a written confession over hie own signature, which waa publicly read at a meeting of the church, and la now on its files. Tbs church promptly expelled him, and he has been placed under bonds to appear at the next criminal term of tho court to be held in Penobscot county. On tbe 31st of October, 1517, Martin Luther nailed hU ninety-five theses against toe doetrine of Indulgences, open tbe door of the Wirtemburg church. Tho Lutherans of this country propose celebrating toe three hundred and fiftieth retnrn of this day, one of tho most momentous In the history of Protestant Christianity, and will devote toe thank ofltarings made upon that day to toe endowment of some of their institutions of learning. The Providence Herald thinks reconstruction very incomplete, since tbe colored operators at “shaving emporium” in that city refuse to operate cm gentlemen cf their own color.

A Dangerous Season. An almost unparalleled quantity of rain has fallen during'the summer. Vegetation has been wonderfully thick and rank, aad, as it decays, aa unusual amount ot sickness ray be expected unless proper means are taken to prevent Ik Fever and ague and bilious remittents already prevail to an alarming extent, and aa the fell advances and the malarious night fogb boeome heavier, the sink list Is likely to tncnaao both In tkncdty and tho country. It la, therefore, only an set of common prudence to keep the vital fanes in fall vigor, so that they stay resist tee «nhealthy influences of the season. Bsinfbrced by the tonic operation of HOSTETTKR’S STOMACH BITTaBS, the system, however weak and susceptibie naturally will, lu nine eases ont often, successfully combat every species of atmospheric poison by which epidemics are produced. During the mantas of September, October and November the difference in temperature between day and night is very great, and the chilling dews and mists of the season are the prollhe causes of indigestion, cholera morbus, diarrhea, and dysentery. Bearing this in mind, remember, also, that the BtTTKBS not only invigorate the stomach and brace the nerves, but act specilcally upon the bowels and the liver, importing to those important organs regularity and tone. It is not reasonable to expect immunity from prevalent complaints if no precautions are taken to escape them. H03TXTTKB’S HITTERS are at once pleasant to the taste, and the most certain of nil safeguards against febrile ailments. oet Ideod A weowtor . *
