The meeting la the Second District was n grand sueeoas, although the notions of tbs mooting worn not distributed until noon. The attendance was an evidence that the people are thinking, and want to hear the great Issues of the day discussed. Their pockets are intweeted, and the enormous taxation is more than they ean hear. They demand n change and when a reference was made to paring the debt In greenbacks, their entnuslcem was unbounded. The Democratic cannon summoned the laboring masses to <he place designated fbr the meeting, and although it waa only a ward demonstration, there were more voters present than at the grand radical gathering on Saturday last. Speeches were made by Mesa Niche), Low* and Jordon, and the crowd atood for hours and gave them their undivided atttntlon. TUB INDIANA BTATE FAIR.
The Fair a Success— Great Number of En tries—Terrs Haute Quite Lively—Description Of the Grounds—The Prospects-The Facing—The Premiums—Etc. a pedal Dispatch to the Indianapolis Herald. All Terre Haute is stark mad over the State fair. You would scarcely recognize the quiet, alow, aolid, social aad handsome city In the buatllng babel Into which It has been converted by the fair. Tern Hants, as a general thing, has not be— used to largo crowds. They never had a man hung, n Preddeatial riot, a Saagerfmt, a Stats convention, or anything to draw n gnat crowd. They never before had a State lair. In the good old dsyt of ▼•r- —« Tj., when the *—**• *dg cabin* and dla-♦v-ueu tndr bowels with gdlons of hard cider—when the Democratic cock fought the Harrison coon and got the wont of It—they once had a monstrous gathering on the aite of old Fort Harrison, two miles north of town. That was to long sgo, however, thst everybody has forgotten It, and the present State fair breaks In upon the pnmatlve simplicity of the people, with all the raclneea of a new sensation. They talk fair Incessantly, and congratulate each other with gnat vigor. In sober truth theae Terre Haute people have taken hold of the fair in a commendable spirit, and have contributed liberally to make the fair a grand succeas. THX GROUNDS An beautifully situated a little more than a mile east ot town. The enclosure contains seventy-five acres, twenty-five of which are beautifully wooded with maple and other trees. Ordinarily a fine, blue grass sward eoventhe ground, but the drouth has been so severe that the grass Is entirely burnt out. Enough of the turf remains, however, to pievent the dust from being disagreeable. The different hall* and the stock quarters are all well bnllt aid commodious. Taken altogether w* never taw a pnttler fair ground. East of the wooded portion of the ground lies a large open field, part meadow and part cornfield. In this are located the time tracks, of which there are two—a mile track and a half mile track. Both of them, I am sorry to say, are In bad condition—not from any fault of the management, bat for want of rain. With a view of beating them down, person* have been permitted to drive on them for several weeks past, but Instead of becoming more solid, they have been cut up until tbe sand and dust Is fetlock deep all around. A good rain last week would have put the tracks In splendid condition. West of the track is the amphitheater, a large and commodious structure, which will afford n Hue view to a large number of spectators. A modest fee admits you to n seat In the amphitheater. Tbe judges’ stand Is Inside the track, and is a tall, circular eoncern, something like a lighthouse, with tbe judges in the second story and a brass band In the third. PROSPXCT3. Everybody is hopeful in view of tbe encouraging prospects. Being held In new territory, thousands of persons who never before attended a State fair will be on hand. There are also new exhibitors. The entries Indicate abetter show, by long odds, than that of Uet year. It Is too soon yet to take a look through the different departments, but enough Is already on tbe ground to indicate the character c-f the exhibition. The principal feature will be stock. There are already a large number of fine horses on the ground, and thU feature of the exhibition has so far exceeded the expectations of the managers that the erection of fifty additional stalls has become neeeosary. Old horsemen say it la the Mggeat show ever seen In the west. One man—Dawson, of Kentucky—U here, with eleven thorough breds, all of which will do bet on. There are also fine cattle on the ground—one bull in particular, which seems to us to have exhausted the subject. He Is the perfeetlon of bull beauty aad taurine aymetry. He belongs, we believe, to McMillan, of Xenia, Ohio, who has a large herd of blooded cattle. The sheep and hog pens already make a gratifying display. There are fine Southdown* and Cotowolda, fat sheep that will measure a yard serosa the back, blaek, greasy looking merino** of the pur* Spanish brand, rich In tk* finest fleece; aad beautiful Caskmere goats, with leaf Nikon fleece, white as anew. There ere monster White Chester boars, turning the scale at eight hundred pounds, which, even In tbe moderate heat of October, have to bo constantly deluged with cold water to keep them from melting; plump China hogs, with tails like corkscrews augering ot fatness. Berkshlrea, Suflolkt, and every other fancy breed of bristles. Solid old farmers In blue and butternut jeans, who have made their plica on pork, hang over the peas, lovingly contemplate the flltby brutes, talking learned hog talk and exchanging valuable experiences as to hog culture, while Hebrews go •cornlully by, with upturned noses, at they contemplate the unutterable flesh. We confess to an occasional transgression In the way •f breakfast bacon and broiled ham, but w* are, nevertheless, a Hebrew on tbe hog question. In spite of trtebnls, the Jews aad the brown bread eeformera, the hog crop will always be a great element of wealth In the West. If there Is anything In which the fair will be abort It will probably be tbe mechanical department. There la little machinery ea the ground, aad Fewer Hall makea a slim skew. TUX RACING. Tbe great features of the fair will be the trotting for the President’s premium of $1,400, and tbe pacing fur the $90$ pane. For the former there will be from alx to eight entries. Of the trotters already on fhs ground wo noNeo the celebrated hone M P*tch*n,” said te have seen his boat days, bowsvtr. Long fotand Dlmmtck’e “Silas Blob;" a beautiful ■oml staled “Botta Gold Dust,” belengtag to Dawson, ot Louisville; “BeUn Loder,” of Bush eounty; “Billy Barr,” belonging to Owen Tally, of Torre Haute, sad “Bella OoL ttns,” owned by Brown, of Now Albany. There are also other distinguished “golata,” who** names we have not at hand jost now. Dawson, by tbe by, offers to lay a wsger of anything from a box #f cigars np to ir kindred thousand, that bo esn boat “Dtxtar” within a year. Dlmmick believe* that Dawson Is only “blowing,” and offers to bet that bo bas three horses, either of which ean clean out Dawson’* entire stud. Of tbs pacing stookwenOtle* “Billy Bayne/* “Dan Voorheea,” “Legal Tender,” “Bod Buek’» candor.” The excitement la

Metropolitan Thxatkr.—Last night an. other fall houae testified their delight with the gorgeona spectacle of the “Black Crook,” which is now on Its second week, with a prospect of continuing to ride upon the billows of success during tbe period that the managers have measured out for Indianapells. People delight to look upon baautiftil pictures, whether they be presented In art or nature, and tbe euccees of the “Black Crook” la owing to tbe fact that a succession of pictures are presented upon the stage that afford the highest gratification to the beholder, often times dazzling in their effects. The skillful artists who arrange and present them have thus carried a weak plot and tame dialogue to the high, set pinnacle of success. ThU is said to be tke only troupe that has ever been allowed to leave tke country of Japan, and it la said that Professor Blsley had considerable difficulty In getting permission from the Emperor of Japan to allow thorn to leave his dominions. A Dangerous Season.
An almost unparalleled quantity of rain has fallen during the summer.
