Four Ykahh a scout and Spy. — Mr.
Charles W. Hilt Is now canvaatlng for thle work, which la a narrative of the pereonal experience of Lorain Kugglee, familiarly known as “General Bunker.” The narrative la bloody enough to gratify the taste of the most ferocious home guard or Morgan raider. Many of the feats recorded In It read very much like cold-blooded assassination*, and It la plentifully spiced with profanity. If true, It lea confeaaion that the shameful atrocities of the late war were not peculiar to the rebels. The following extract will give our readers an Idea
of the horrors of irregular warfare: “ During the march of the army northwest,
from Its campaigns against General Price, and when we were near the Tennessee line, thinking that an opportunity might occur of reuniting upon a certain doctor living in the 8Ute of Tennessee, who bad seen instrumental In the amstand imprisonment of myself and ten others, by false accusations,! called upon General Grant and told him whs* we had suffered by the doctor, and asked him If I might Uke the same men add go through the line* some
night and kill him.
The general said, “I can not give you leave to teko a man's life, except under such circumstances as sre warranted by the rules of war; If you wish to capture him, I’ll give you the
countersign.”
The next evening a party of eleven men, without the countersign, went through the Itnee, unobserved, and repaired to the house of said doctor. Stopping at a neighboring bouee, about a mile from the doctors, was a Miss Armstrong, a sister of the confederate General Armstrong. I had paid some attention to her the summer before. When we oame near where she lived, 1 said to the men, "1 have an old acquaintance living about a mile from here that I want to saa. You go on and capture the doctor, and wait there until I come.” I found the lady at home and passed the evening with her very pleaeantly. Before I wee aware of It, two hours bad pasted, collecting my promise to meet the men at the doctor’s, 1 bade the lady adieu and hastened

Mtmcin.—We paid ear ink visit to Moade n few dayaatnee. Monde Is n geod place to go. It It Um capital of Delaware county, con. taint • popnlatka nf about thtrty-flvo hundred, tad boaata of many line butlneaa houson, as wall aa two handsome school bouses. The coart house 1« nearly as shabby as tors, and the stmts art well graveled. Munrle, as well as Delaware county, la loyal. V Ws might eay d-d loyal. But It isn’t at loyal aa it was. Many good Republicans aro beginning to talk gresabocks, instead of rebellion. They are gradually becoming awaxo of the fact that the war Is over, end that fer the peat two yaara they have been the vlethna of artful demagogues. ▲ grsat and radical change has taken place in Delaware county, and the next election will tell a different
tale.
In Munde we met several solid Democrat* who bar# renamed faltkfal thrauffhoot— among them Adam Wolfe. Adam la a substantial old gentleman, whoa* frith In the final triumph of Donaoceatlo prlnolplsa la uaaKsvable. He Is an ln<M*tfgable and Indomitable worker, who talks good, bom sense In a plain blaflt way which la bearing good fruit, A grant many years ago Mr. Wellt pleated a hickory tree In hla yard and named it Andrew Jackson. A friend who saw him planting It aaked him why he did It. “Nevermind,” said he; “you and I will yet crack nuts under that tree, Doctor.” “ Tut, tut, Adam,” said the Doctor; “ you and 1 will bo food for the worms long before that tree bears nuts.” Adam watched his pet hickory through many a long year, and now has tbs satisfaction of seetnf It boer n small crop of nuts. The Doctor is still In the flesh, and has promised to bring a hammer, and come down, when the nuts ripen. Adam takes great pride In his tm, and looks upon the crop of nuts as a favorable omen, indicating that we will have a government again. They are a temperance people in Muncie. A man Is reported to have died there of thirst. It was along time ago, however. The people of Munde are very Proud. That’s what ales them. Wo went up to Munde to llsb. White river runs conveniently •*** n u "rid t® belitav-ur •* rre *ttb bass,of the largest and most ravenous kind. Wo were driven to the fishing ground In a spring wagon In company with eight members of the Black Horn band, to wit: Alfred Kilgore, United States District Attorney; George Baxter, banker; Carl Shipley, lawyer; John Upp, of Homer, Illinois; Captain McClellan, an agreeable gentleman with long auburn whiskers; Ira Turner, Mark Walling, and George Taylor—all accomplished anglers and musldans. The members took with them two boxes of their musical Instruments, (to soothe the savage breasts with a rural concert, In case the fish didn’t bits) two bottles of M antidote,” In case of make bite, and numerous refresbmenta In the shape of oysters, dgars, etc. At the river, Colonel Schaeffer and Dick Berger straggled la. They fished with us. Ira Turner caught the minnow*. We baited and then we waited. The fish were not In appetite, and we kept waiting. The most of us waited about the commissary wagon until late In the evening, when It was no use to wait any longer In that locality. John Upp ■at down on the river bank and chucked stones at Baxter’s cork. Shipley sat down on a bumble bee. He got up again. Kilgore waded In the water and dived for mussels. He brought up one the first time, and remarked °De profundis clam avf.” He got about a bushel, all told, and buried them In the sand. Worked so bard he broke out In a clammy perspiration. He has been on his mussell ever since. McClellan started to cross with Baxter on his back. About the middle be laid down and rolled over. All this time the baae continued steadily not to bite. Finally we hitched up and drove back to town, stopping by the way to look at a new brick house which certain citizens of Muncie built for Tom Proud. Drank a little spring water in Proud’s cellar. We recommend everybody that want to fish to go to Mancie. Its the best place we know of. They know how to fish up there. It Is true we didn’t catah a fish or get a bite, but that was the fault of the stubborn fish. The science was tbere, but the foolish fish hadn’t sense enough to appreciate it. We forgot to say that Kilgore took his mussels home, with the Intention of frying and eating them. As ho was not In town yesterday we are afraid he did so. We expect to hear of a funeral in Muncie. Another Extension or the Indianapolis and Cincinnati Railroad.—H. C. Lord, Eeq.. and General Burnside have been manipulating for the organization of a railroad from Lafayette to Bloomington, Illinois. Mr. Lord promises to build the rood to the State line, within a year, If the citizens of Tippecanoe and Benton counties take two hundred thousand dollars of stock. Forty-two thousand dollars have been subscribed In Lafayette since Saturday morning, and It la probable the road will be built. Tbe Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Lafayette company Is making herculaan efforts to extend Its business. In this case the extension will be no less valuable to Indianapolis than to Cincinnati, for although apodal Inducements should be held out to merchants to go to Cincinnati, hundreds of Illinois dealers will stop here, or send orders here by the agents of our wholesale houses. A very large amount of goods are now sold In this city for Central Illinois, and a direct road to Bloomington would afford additional facilities for reaching some of the customers of Meridian street. We trust It will be built at once.—Evening Commercial.
