It was strip morning—we bad risen at three, ridden ten miles, and struck the creek just ae the trout were reedp tor breakfast. Looking carefully for a sheltered place to hitch our horse, we slyly crept along behind fences, etc., till we reached ike part of tbn stream not generally Ashed. A farm house stood one-quarter of a mile away. A llenutlfnl Voting Wonsan Onfrogrtf, nobbed, and round Inoonoible on the street. At about half-past nine o'clock on Sunday right rflicer Simms, of the Pittsburg night police, while passing up First street, near the corner of Short, la the First Ward, discovered a well dressed and respects ble looking young .lady lying in a state of Insensibility on the pavement In front of the First Ward school house. * She was carried Into the bouse of Mr. John Fltzlmmons, adjoining the school house, and every effort was made to restore her to consciousness. On searching the locality where she had been found, a small pocket diary containing a postage stamp and a few rents In change, was discovered on the pavement. I>r. Stoneroad was railed in, and In about half an hour after being brought In she became conscious, but was delirious. She recognized her diary, however, and called for her money and her railroad ticket. Notwithstanding the remedies administered, her mind continued to wsnderat Intervals during the entire night; Monday morning she was so far recovered as to be able to converse luckily. Her arms, were badly bruised, as the result of an assault upon her, and marks upon Olkor portions of her body Indicated that the worst of outrages had been committed upon her. Her name Is Kate Waldron; she Is twentyono years of age. Her residence Is with her stepmother in the vicinity of Jloston, Massachusetts. Some two months ago her sister wss married, and started with her husband for Oalveston, Texas. Kate accompanied them, and remained there until recently, when she started for home, coming by way of .New Orleans. 8he arrived In this city at ten o’clock on Saturday evening, and took a room at the Union Depot Hotel, On Sunday morning she had a violent toothache, and went to a Penn street dentist to have It extracted. There she discovered Christ Methodist Episcopal Church, and determined to go there in the evening. Abe did so, and coming out, crossed the street, and she discovered that she was uncertain ns to the direction in which the hotel was. She saw two men standing by the lamp post, and asked them to direct her. They told her that she was far away from It, and that a carriage had better be procured, offering to bring her one. 8ho accepted the offer, and they came with tho carriage almost Instantly. They got Into the vehicle with her. and almost imhaedlatcly one of them seized her arms and the other applied a towel saturated with chloroform or other to her mouth and nose. 8ho speedily became Insensible, and remembers nothing more till she found herself m Mr. Titzslmmons' house. Hho was robbed of her pocket book, containing if It', and a railroad ticket for Boston. She had on tier fingers two rings, one a valuable opal one, and the other of plain gold. Both were taken from her Angers, the Aesh being lorn in removing them. Yesterday afternoon l*r. Murdoch, at the request of Mayor McCarthy. called on the victim, and ascertained bt* yond n doubt that her person had been outMisa Waldron describes the villains as being reiperfahlo in appearance, and says one of them was rather short and thick set, She noticed a man of his appearance at tho hotel watching her very closely. The h hired girl is beautiful nmUntelligent, is still at the house of her now friends, and is receiving tho kindest treatment. Tf the driver was compelled to drive on the criminal errand be will find it safest to come and make a full statement.
Advertising and It#
Few hu-dness men, says the Utica Herald, a Ivrrlise systematically, liberally and persistentiy. Those who pay most attention to it either advertise fitfully, or with ft degree of neglect which they would regard culpable In any oilier departmontof their business. What would a merchant bo thought of, who only opens bis store now and then, to invite and serve customers? Yet an advertwement In a flourishing paper Is more oonstplcuous than one's store, is more observed, amf more spoken of, and to withdraw It Is like putting up the shutters or taking down the sign. The most
enterprising merchants and traders lo the In
terlor, think
[themselves liberal If they spend a
few hundred dollars a year for advertising. They would deem the farmer blind to bis own interest who should bo stingy in planting, and should fall to put in seed In proper quantity, because it costs something. Advertising Is the seed planting of the business man, and stinginess here must make the harvest meager. What shall be the sum appropriated to advertising? It will vary with the character nnd extent of business. But the smallest trade can be made more profitable, and the largest can be extended, by liberal ndvertiseing. The rule is sometimes given that as much should lie paid for advertising as for rent. This ^may be too much in some cases, too little In others. But every business should be kept constantly and prominently before the readers of the established papers of the district from

And at it we went. No sooner would the book touch the water than we had a trout. We forgot the house, the man, the bays and the

To outrun a dog was not to be thought of! There wae no time to loee. He cleared a fence, came for ns just as we reached a tree and by great activity took a front seat on allmb above

we surmised trouble—quite much, for twice bad that bold man of boll dogs and ag-
riculture elegantly wolloped Innocent tourists for being seen on nls suburban premises. His reputation ae a peace man was not-good, nnd tbere arose a large heart toward our throat. Time Is the essence of contracts, and tbe saving ordinance for those in trouble. We had a stout line In our coat pocket and a large hook Intended for reck bass, If we failed to take trout. And as good luck would have it. we had a nice sindwlch and a piece of boiled
corned beef in our other pocket.
We called tbe dog pet names, but he wasn’t on It! Then wo tried to move down—when he’d move up! At last we trebled our bass line, fastened tbe great limerick to it—batted it with tbe corned beef, tied the end of tbe

Not any!
Then we pulled gently on tbe line—It was fast! Tlge yanked and pulled, but’twas no use! The attention of that canine wae diverted from us—his business was being done

Paer AfleBewgal. The Lafyette Journal, a paper which publishes a good deal of balderdash, occasionally get* off something worth republishing. Tbs following, on the death of ex-Senator Me. Doroat is good:
Senator McDougal, of California, was one of tbe most brilliant men in the United State*
Senate. He possessed not only a strong mind but one cultivated to a high degree. Not
much more than a year ago be mode a speech upon tbe resolnlion to banish tho sale of Intoxicating liquors from the capItol, In which be put forth an elaborate, and, so far as style wa* concerned, beautiful and learned plea in favor oi not only drinking, but drunkenness Itself. All who have been much about the Senate Chamber the last few years know how completely b« illustrated In bis habits bis unfortunate theory; and none who know him were surprised to hear of his death, which occurred st Albany, New Y'ork, on Tuesday. It is not pleasant to speak of a roan’s follies
after his decease. Shiil.xpeare says:
1 The evil men do lives after them, The good Is oft Interred with the bones .”
This In one sense true, In another not. Most men feel ashamed of having "warred with the handful of day,” death so easily lays at their feet. To such as have experienced tbe tyranny of the passion for drink which has consumed so many hearts and brains, and made desolate so many homes, tbe death of .Senator McDougal, from tbe effects of long continued Intemperance, awakens no feeling but that of
pity and regret. His speech in favor of intemperance did not convince even himself.
It was a narcotic given to soothe bis self-
respect, quiet bis own conscience, and dim bis
own eye to tbe vision of these spectres of wee which rose from every bursting bubble that crowned his cup. Tbere are donators to-day treading In the footstep of their compeer—men to whom tbe nation looks anxiously for a dlsunwavering statesmanship. Their

which others will follow.

It ts reekoned as necessary ns rent, and often ten times as much.!* spent for it, AdvertUiag must be done so as to reach the people whose custom is sought. A separate sheet, a handbill or circular, Is a direct attack; and the person who receives it either throws it addo wKh* out reading, or ho put* himself oa the defensive agsfiist if. A notice In the favorite paper Is a fl ink movement; it catches the eye unawares; It sttract* attention at an Idle or listless mommt; it Iracomns p n of the our. real news. crime.
Many were Inclined to ridicule tbe Congressional Temperance Society formed at tbe cepltol. Tbe public renunciation of strong drink by Senator Yates, in which, in a moment of gusbing and exquisite tenderness, he alluded to the joy tbe aews of bta resolution would give bis wife, was regarded by some as an undignified weakness. But better far would It have been for Mr. McDjugal —better for would It be for Saulsbury—for Chandler, and yes, we must say it. for Presideat Johnson himself—and more than all, better far weuld It have been for the country had each one of them, with all the nation’s servants in the capltol, done like the Illinois Senator-dashed tbe cup forever from their Ups. Intemperance is bad enough when It InVHdos tbe borne, making havoc of domestic hopes, but when it enters the ball of legislation, blunting the intellect and flring the pae. stons of men who think and act for milIIoas born and unborn, the evil consequences arc beyond comprehension. Who ean say bow many errors and how many crimes Intemper. snee has committed In Washington city during the past ten years?
