The radios! papers are bitter In their denunrl illona of the President, not upon the ground of failure to discharge his duty under the (institution, but for the reason that he has declined to make himself toe mere representative of » psrty nnd carry out Ue behests, reg tidies* of hit higher obligation to the supremo law of tbo land. Tho Indianapolis .fiHirnal Is ono of this class. It Is not sattsiled with any thing so far as tbo executive depart-* mont of tho Government Is concerned, short ol complete subserviency to the radical faction which controls tho rump Congress. As evidence of Its Infatuation upon this point, we (piote the following from an elaborate editorial
In a late issue of that paper:
*• There is no mistaking the fact that the recent extraordinary proceedings at 1fa 9,1,n !j‘ ton have greatly encouraged the rebel element, and revived among the more reckless copperhead* of the North and the herder States the treasonable suggestion of a coup d'etat against Congress, current prior to the Union suecesses In the elections of 1800, Unfortunately for hi* fame and personal welfare, but more eipeelallv for the repose and prosperity of tho country, the President has repelled the support of hi* old friends, and gathered around himself the worst of the knaves who were conspicuous for disloyalty during ton rebel

These desperate pollth

unrepresented states have been made.” Tho dournal does not believe that any such
purpose 1* Intended, or that there Is any foundation for its suggestion of a coup iTctat against Congress except In Us fevered Imagination. It Is a -pretty good Joke for' the Journal, especially in view of Its past record, to charge that the President Is endeavoring to prevent tho restoration of the unrepresented
Slates. After tho accession of Mr.
to the prosidceo'. *ao .roumal expressed itself highly delighted with his policy, and pronounced it highly patriotic and excessively loyal. iMonroN thought likewise, and In bis celebrated Uiebmond speech demonstrated most conclusively that the restoration policy of I.incoin and Johnson wore Identical, only that the l itter was a little harder on the rebels than was his predecessor. And In hts message at (he extra sossion of the Legislature In his endorsementof President Johnson w »s most eerdlal. With but few exceptions, such was tho radical estimate of the Chief Magistrate of tho nation, and the agencies he was employing to restore the late rebel States t> their former practical relations to the Union. Even John W. Kounky, who Is now s? bitter in denunciation of the President, as 1 ate as the 2J 1 day of December, 18C5, sustained the President In his rostoratlon policy, with the following decided approval which appeared In bis paper, the Philadelphia Press,
of that date:
While Mr. Sumner and Mr. jjtevens may be fir the time dissatisfied that their expectations have not been realized, the sterling and gratifying fact remains, that, under the lead of An-
drew Johnson, the States have boon brought back fo the national fireside with such Indem-

Who has changed? Tho President ha* not. lie stands.fust where ho did when the Journal, Morton. To further their plans and accomplish their ends they have relied, as the Journal now does, upon tho partlzan infatuation of years past, but which we hopo for tho perpetuity of republlran Institutions Is yielding to tho " solier second thought of tho peopl^”

A Mr. Fenton, who was section boss on tho road, had become smitten with the charms of » lady residing at ono of the stations on tho road, and made her acquaintance, which ripened into an offer of marriage, which was accepted, and a propitloOs time was awaited for its consummation. After some necessary delay, he wrote to her from Richmond, saying that the looked for time bad arrived, and for her to come to Richmond and they would wed. She complied, and the section boss, in the gushing fullness of his joy and confidence, advised her of his means and plans. Ho had, as he Informed her, a considerablo sum of money in hand, and also small stock of goods, which he was expecting to turn into money, which would enable him to become the owner of a houso and lot, and then "love in a cottage” was theirs, In answer to her inquiries in regard to the merchandise, ho very frankly told her that he had taken It from the railroad cars on bis train, and that there was a big chance ahead for more, as be had the arrangements all made and in good working order. The bride elect did not relish the revelation as well as Fenton had anticipated, and her honest bosom swelled with indignation at tho idea of uniting her destinies with a railroad thief, and she took time to think tbo matter over and returned to her homo. After a little reflection, she concluded this was too big a load td carry, and upon a full consultation with a relative, made a clean breast of the facts. John Smith, freight conductor; Stephen Fenton, Kokomo, section 1>ofs; Charles W. Cook, David R. Yaw, and Goorgir W. Hull, brakemen on Smith’s train, were all arrested. There la a mystery about tho affair we can not solve, and that is, why sbo has concealed tbo matter for ao long a time, as she only divulged It • feW days since, and the mother has been nearly distracted ever since the daughter confided to her ears the

At tbe time he was killed, it will be remembered that several men of the Seventeenth Indiana, under command of Colonel Dumont, claimed the accomplishment of tbe feat, but since that time tbe affair has Income a matter of written history, which, with the general reader.wlll settle the dispute. A few day* since, In looking over Greeley’s "American Conflict,” Volume I, and beginning on page r>,023. we find, in regard to tbe death of General Garnett, be holds the

Sergeant Burlingame, here referred to, was Benjamin F. Burlingame, Jr., until recently a citizen of Wilmington, but now n resident of J cffersonvllle. Major Gordon, of Indianapolis, who was then sergeant major of tbe Seventh Indiana, and was an eyewitness to tbe affair, confirms tbe above statement.
