CHAPTER XVI. <Mineral Wealth—Quartz Mining—Quicksilver—The New Almaden Mines—Their Management—New Idria Mims—Coal Oil—Copper—Coal>. Special Correspondence Indianapolis Herald. Everybody knows what immense yields the California placers added to the wealth of the world; what intense excitement they awakened, what great breadths of country was covered by them; what crowds thronged to them from all parts of the civilized world; how sprang up, as if by magic, a great and powerful State, dotted with towns and cities; and, how these placers, once thought inexhaustible, have, of late years, refused to yield but a modicum of the much coveted gold. But few, outside the mining districts, are aware of the fact that the mines ot precious metals, on the Pacific slope, are not half developed. The kind of mining is radically changed. Quartz ledges are being discovered in well nigh every mountain range west of the Rocky mountains, if not west of the Missouri river. Locked up in these ledges are vast stores of gold and silver, reaching down no one knows how far. We have already noticed this branch of mining, in connection with the Reese river coun-
try.
Quicksilver and copper arc also abundant in California. The quicksilver mines of New Almaden.in S uita Clara county, arc probably the richest In the world. These mines are Hi the spurs of the Santa Cruz mountains, about twelve miles south of San .lose. Many Tears ago Indians were In the habit of resorting to them to get the red earthy matter, there .'mounding, to paint themselves. This fact attractcd the attention of certain Mexican miners, who, before the conquest of the country, prospected them, ascertained thoir character, organized a company, denounced them according to tho Mi xiean law, and procured a grant thereof, and of a tract of adjoining land from the Mexican government. After the conquest. When the extraordinary value of the mines began to nt'ract attenticn, tho title of the company was stoutly resisted bv certain parties upon the pretext that the M xiean gran* was defective, and that Die legal title was in the United Slates. The history of the various law suits which grew out of these mines, if one-half tho reports current In the most intelligent circles of the vicinity are to bo believed, is one of unexampled villainy, in which the niimrsot prominent government ciliclals figure um aviably conspicuous. The oiigiiial company took possession, developed the mines, erected many buildings, giving employment to hundreds of laborers, and cmnt'.kting Iheir operations with great liberality. An injunction was obtained restraining them from working the mines. Public indignation was aroused, and threats freely made to disregard the order of tho court. A company of United States soldiers was ordered to tiie ene of the trouble to enforce the IniuncUon, when a telegram was sent to Washington, i.dvlsing that the election, near nt hand, might be seriously affected, if the troops were not withdrawn, and an order to wilbdraw was telegraphed from the War He1 Th" C original eomp.ny, assured that the whole power of the general government, exerted through certain otllclals, would be brought to bear against them, finally sold out to another company—not to the United States, for $1,700,000, less than the annNal yield of tho mines. This second company is ^proposed of a number of distinguished politicians at Washington, and certain Eastern capltalkts, prominent among whom aro certain parties who at first stoutly asserted the title of the I nlted states to tho mines! "What a strange conversion! A neighboring ranch—tho Her--whose lines wero well known, was
From the Dubuque, Iowa, Times, August 15. A Sfencklsur In•tance ot J a ▼•all# Depravity. A few days since eome residents In the neighborhood of Eagle Point, com pi slued to officer Elmer of thefts which were being almost nightly committed among tbem, their out bouses and cellars being robbed of whatever wwa eatable In them, and their chickens stolen with impunity. They laid these thefts to a gang of boy* who had been driven out of an old shod near the Point, where they bad lived with two girls, and who had taken up their quartera on an Island In the Mississippi, opposite McKnlghl’s spring. Day before yeeterday Officer Elmer took a skiff and rowed across to the Island. The boys saw him and fled to a skiff, of which they had possession, and went to the main land on the down sips, he following them. One of them snapped a gun at him after reaching the land. Tho party escaped for that day. The officer returned to the Island, and inspected the camping ground. There waa a hut of bushes ereeted, the floor of which was tarpaulin, while crocks of butter, him, bread, sugar, coffee, potatoes, and the utensils with which to cook the food, were lying around loose. Two shot guns were also in the hut, with many articles of clothing. Y'esterday morning, one of the party, a lad named William Cruise, was arrested. He made a confession. He said that the gang wbo lived on the Island was composed of two girls and four boys. The girls, whose parenU live In this city, were aged respectively fourteen and fifteen years, while the boys, who also have parents here, ranged from fifteen to eighteen years In age. These lived In a state of shameless immorality on the Mind—sleeping together, bathing togelber, ami vi.ui capering about in a state rrnu’ity. For provisions, they foraged on Uio ou either slde or the river, and often visited the domiciles of Eagle Point. They would enter kitchens and other places where provisions were kept and steal whatever they could lay their bands on. As for clothing, they managed to get it whenever they wanted It, When it rained, they spread the tarpaulin—which was stolen from a raft—and managed to keep dry. Many of the particulars of their life on the Island are too revolting, almost, to bo believed, much less to be printed. These young wretches must have t>cen depraved to a depth as low as that of the Mexican "diggers,” so brutish and vile was their conduct. It Is well for them that their retreat was broken up. Yesterday another of the boys, John Kennlg, was arrested. Uoth of the lads are in the calaboose. The girls, we believe, are at tbeir home. The rest of tho gang are abroad still, and it is highly probable that they will atay away. Their conduct hag furnished one of the worst instances ol juvenile depravity that we have ever heard of,
Ifow Lopez Waa Killed. The following letter describes the assassination of Lopez, who betrayed Maximilian: Lope/ was stopping at a hotel In Puebla, where bU wife spurned him from her presence. Early one day a Mexican arrived, and faralliarlzeef himself with a hostler In a livery stable adjoining the hotel. General Miguel Lopez was inquired for, but not being in, the stranger was told that the General would be in at dinner. Hefore the dinner hour Lopez returned, and was pointed tut to the stranger, who made special note of his man. W hen dinner was called, Lopez and his assassin occupied opposite seats at the table. After some minutes, during which tho stranger called for and drank a glass of wine, he deliberately rose, drew a concealed knife, ami sprang upon Lopez, and stabbed him nine times. The stranger then took his hat, and, as be started to leave, said. “ This Is the way all traitors should lie paid.” Mo ono interfered, or prevented the assassin from leaving. Thus was the blood of Maximilian, Mlramon, Mejia, yes, and thousands of others, avenged. Information Wanted. Tho N'ow York Herald is anxious to procure information upon the following points; Mon* Information Wantm).—Can any one inlorra us what amount of money Chief Justice Salmon P. stretched over a portion of the mines, ami an other grant—the Los Capltanclllos—which all the old Mexican residents of the country consider of doubtful origin, and certainly never to have Included the mine*, Is stretched oter tho remaining portion, and patented to the present company, or to parties In their Interest. 1’oor Uncle Sam! to be thus basely abandoned by his chosen guardians. Is cruelly ungrateful! What a strange transition from the virtuous government official to the avari-
cious private citizen!
I repeat, such is the burden of tho reports rife In (’iltfornla. "Everybody says so.” and everybody believes them. I do not vouch for their truth. There is enough known, however, to warrant and demand proper Investigation, into the contract of tho government officials, when under difl'erent auspices, such a proceeding will not degenerate Into a farce. The present manager of tho New 8t. Maden mines, Mr. Hutterworth, is evidently a man tf great Industry, business tact and force of character. Despite these qualities, ho Is especially unpopular in the vicinity ol tho mines. I >nder thoold coin pany, free trade was permitted at the mines, and free access granted to any part of tho premises. That trade was tmmcncelv valuable to the neighboring towns. The operatives of tho mines, numbering seme, thing over llfteen hundred, built up a considerable town, containing a population of men, women and children of not less than twenty-
live hundred per ms.
Under the present management the right to trade at the mines Is farmed out for various sums, and the privileges thus granted, are exclusive. For Instance, the right to sell moat on the company's premises, is permitted one person for some twelve hundred or fifteen hundred dollars; to sell vegetables, alike sum; and so on through the various branches of business, producing In the aggregate, ten lo flfteen thousand dollars each year for th« sale ol "privileges.” A grade has been constructed from the Hacienda to the " town-on-tbc-bill,” to haul ore over from the mines to the works. For traveling over this grade, a mile In length, every person must pay fifty cents toll. Theae, together with many otkef regulations of a similar onerous characler, have effectually embittered the people of the surrounding country against the present company. The operatives are chiefly Mexican* and Uornlabmen. On rlo, or pay day, the atresia of the "town on-the-blll” present foenea of drunken brawls, requiring the eonatant preaence of a deputy sheriff to keep them from rising to the proportion* of ag Insurrection.
