Dr. Hotimnn l>r. Uolmes^R
mnd Iku Clergymen. his serial story ••1'heUuar-
dlan An^el” ( Atta/UiC J/ont/Wp), Introduce* a certain Kev. .Loepn Beltaiuy stoker. Tuls personage, so far an he ha* tiguml in the ro-
mance, has given offense to a great number of clergymen, who are expressing themselves ijutie Ireely upon the subject In the columns of
lue religious papers. We do not think that
clergymen, as a class, are sensitive t > satire at theexpoii'e of “the cloth.” The character of the Hev. Mr. Stlggins In the 1'ickwick Papers la one of the most powerful delineations of
clerical delinquency In the range of Itullon; but we have never heard of clergymen refusleg to read Dickens on that account, or denouncing him with that severity of language which they visit upon Dr. Holmes. Why is this ? The reason, we take It, may be found in ihe wide difference between btlggloe and Stoker. Tnetormer Is a vulgtr creature, who sponges on the hospitality of weak females, and, aithougn the bngnt and sblmng light of the “Kin OtZer Brick Lane Junction temperonce A-sociatiou,” gets drunk rtguiarly on his hot pineapple rum ttnd water. This Is bad, but he might have done much worse. lh Is such a thorough, transparent knav>*, bo unlike anything that the reader has ever met in his observations, that the grossues* of the caricature Is at once perceived, and dllg* gins is looked upon not as the type of any ( lorg>m m that ever lived, but as an extreme, well nigh impossible lustuuco of what a clergy man might bo. Thu clergy would say of such a besotted humbug, II oue could be found in real life just like him, that he was no om-iu. ber of tneir profession, but a pretender and a quack, and they would rejoice with the rest ot mankind to see him sent to the lock up. But Dr. Holmes’s Hioktr is a man of another pattern. Ho is portrayed as a preacher of tusie and nffnemeiit, highly successful as a revivalist, and trusted in and beloved by nearly everybody. With the females ol his congregation he Is a special favorite, lor he possesses exactly that combination of qualities which endear a pastor to a female heart. He Is the contidanie of all their religious perturbations and their domestic troubles. This Is the saintly slue of the Hev. Stoker; and If Dr. Holmes hid stopped there be would have given to ihe wond a neat portrait of a good t brgyman. But .Stoker has another side—a sooty oue. H a religion Is n monstrous fraud. Under the cover of fatherly counsels he is pouring tales of earthly passion into the ears of the young and ineXperieoced lambs, and the reader Is left to guess, with it much effort, to what extent his polished and honeyed hypocrisies undermine the morals ol the too tender and susceptible members of his flock. To ibis fancy sketch of a wolf In sheep’s clothing the clergymen object, and well they may. The Stigginses carry the badge of by* poerisy In their red and tumid faces and hlc« euping speech. But if Stokers really exist sm >ngtis, who shall know and mark them? To lyumlt the possibility of such characters is to throw suspicion on those clergymen—and there are many of them—who resemble Stoker on bis saintly side. There Is no way to pick them out until sircumstances reveal their guilty pi actlces. The lung freedom from discovery and disgrace Is what makes Stoker a most dangerous villain, in comparison with whom Sitggtns is a petty offender. Injustice to the clergy men it must be said that the character of this consummate clerical hypocrite is foreign to experience, and highly Improbable. There is n > lack of fallen clergymen, but they are not of the Stoker spcclee. Heealllng the cases which occur to our mind, wo remember them ns Coarse men, who bad a turn t^r politic d speech tnanktng, preached very little religion, and were always suspected of being knaves by those who knew them (test. Whin they ilnally ran awav with other men’s wives, or were detected in some other flagitious offense, the surprise was general among their congregations that their barefaced imposture bad not been seen through before. To a ebar. acter of that kind—a noisy, ranting, political preacher—doing the same things that Stoker
illd, we do not "believe the clergv would hgve demurred. They would sadly hava admitiad

mind of any who observe the changes of mam hers In good society that this very serious charge is well founded, nor must th« ladies, though the Lancet delicately abstains from direct illusion to them, be allowed to conalder themselves exempted from Its strictures or unconcerned la it* warnings. £very thing la modern customs tends mat way—-the large wine glasses in u«e ;»t all dinner tables, the introduction of amiable alcoholic drinks—the fashion of giving claret or moselle cup as an adjunct to the five o’clock tea table, and at the buffets of evening parties, where girls, heated with dancing nr fevered with the constant round of exciumont, may be seen swallowing glass after glass of these tempting and fallaciously cool beverages in place of tbe lemonades and syrups which formerly sntHeed fortheir refreshment. But has tbe faculty, as it Is called, nothing to answer for In promoting tbe present state ol things? Children are now given, "by the doctor’s orders,” an amount of alcohol which would have bornthd their grandmothers. The beer or port wine administered two or three times a day at ilrst disgusts, but soon becomes grat« ful to them. Almost every one of us may plead medical advice as tbe beginning of tbe habit. They say tbe modern type of disease is low; that stimulants are requisite; and that whether they prescrli>e chloric ether or champagne, does not much signify. Perhaps not In
but in the morsl
tbe physical point of view,
one? surely the temptation to tbe abuse of
such stimulants as lavender, ether, etc.,Is not so great or so constantly recurring as that of wine and liquors, which are offered and pressed upon us wherever we go. Brandy now takes the place of aal volatile In thu lady’s dressing esse; and the properties of gin as a eleansiug agent applicable to everything from 'he gill stopper of a scent bottle to a lace flounce are (irmly impressed on the mind or the waiting maid. We would never epoak but wtih respect of tbe noble profeeeion of healing, but It can not bs denied that the peculiar tern pto*too assailing some of Ite more “fashionable” members Is that of followlnv rather than leading tbe loclinattons of their

Fromt e Milwaukee Sentinel, Frank of a Somnambulist*
A somewhat singular freak ol a somnambulist has just been related to us. A gentleman living in the Seventh Ward one morning missed a quantity oi money which be bad in a drawer, aud, although strict search was made, no clue to the missing cash could be found. Tbe money was taken from n drawer which was kept locked, and tae key In the gentle-

pocket. The affair was Involved in mystery, which was not removed the next day, when a set of silver spoons were mla-ed. The servants were suspected of (be theft, aod as a knowledge that tbe articles had been missed had been kept frrm them, it was determined to keep a watch the next night «nd fasten the guilt upon whoever should be found trespassing. Everything about tbe house remained quiet until about two o'clock, when a stir was beard. Tho person who was on the watch peered cautiously through the hall from whence ctme tbe sounds rd footsteps, and law approaching the gentleman of ihe bouse. He went to tbe cupboard with a stealthy step, took therefrom a qumtlty of silver plate and started for tbe back yard, closely followed by tbe watchman, whi

He was awoke, however, by the watchman, and appeared greatly bewildered at finding bmiwir in that place, The matter was explained to him. and search was at once loetituted among the ashes for tbe ml-alng property. The search was happily rewarded by tbe discovery of the eilver plate, epoont and greenbacks, safely secreted among the *»hes, where they bad been deposited by the gentl *• man, who had been unconsciously guilty of robbing himself. Interest In milfortnations and unnatural growths. Hence bis choice of an out of the way chunicter, aod his loving and minute analysis of tho repulsive Stoker. It Is with Inm purely a work of art, probably Involving no imended affront to tbe clergy. In a speecu made by the author before some medical society recently, be Is reported to have said that If he could Qml a doctor who was a villain, ho would put him in a book. Of course there aye so called "doctors” who are vlllalasj but thtoi tbe profession denomtostes ‘ quack*.” Yet ft is possible that some time one of those courtly physicians of the old school with white hair, ample forehead and gentle voice—the meet regular of the regulars—in whom tbe patient trusts as in smother, may tarn oat to be* scoundrel of ine Stoker stripe. The character D not beyond tho reach of Imagination. If some author should take tbe liberty of creating such a monster, we fancy that the medical profession, and Iff. Holmes among them, would not altogether like it. So with lawyers. There are hanger* on of the Temple of Justice, known »§ “shy »ters,” capable of slierlog wills in their own favor, destroying Important papers, or stealing their client’s watch and pocket book. When creatures of this kiud are Tntrodueed In fl tlon respmaMn lawyer* do not protest. But let one of our first cUss counsellors and advocates of high standing bn set forth In a novel as guilty of such practices, and we do not think tbe American bar would rest under It without chafing. The error committed by Dr, Holmes is in taking bis Clerical Impostor from those ranks of toe clergy which have been hitherto regirded as quite exempt from such ex impbs of unredeemed turpitude.—/Veto Yik Journal of (Jommrct.
