“The Leg ifiiaineee.”
The "leg business,” as known to managers and dramatists, is tbo same thing that Is known to tbe outer world as the "naked
tlruna.’’ ’v
Two classes of "female” performers are assoelated with the naked drama, so called. Tie first are the hallet dancer*. The theater as legitimately d-alsin music and daoelng as It does in tragedy or comedy. For the dancers of the legitimate ballet I—who know them as a clssa well-have a thorough respect. They are * hard working, til paid body of women, not Infrtquently the aole support of entire f«ml. lies, and their morel characters are not one whit afficted by their line of buslnes*. Few men work so hard as tbe ballet girl—the coryphee, who, by half past eight In tbe morning, Is at the theater, clad In gauze and alik webbing, practicing pirouettes, entrechats, toe torture. and other Inquisitorial egerdses. I heve seen these girls practice Irom nine o'clock In the m >rnlng until half-past twelve, almost without cessation, then take adorned lunch; sometimes eating while standing shivering In their thin clothing In a draughty space behind the "flits,” only to begin their labor again at half-past one, and so continued till five. This is lor tbe matinee performance; at h iif-past seven that of tbe night commences, flol-tiing, perhaps, ateleven. Then come* undressing, redressing, folding and laving away their stage paraphernalia; for, even If not naturally tidy, and tidiness is the rule with them—tbo exception rare—these girls must for economy’s sake.be careful of their clothing. And so. long after midnight, the timid creaturcs, olten laden with heavy burdens, creep listlessly into street car*, to be stared at by rude tneo, or, still worse, drag borne through the deserted streets, alone and unprotected, at risk of being mistaken for irai/iatat of the
lowest grade.
With tbe dancer who baa pasted the chrysalis ballet girl stage, *nd Is new a full fletigtd. buttei fly premiere, with her name large lettered in tbe bills, and her engagement papers stamped and signed at the lawyer’s,
the road Is not so stony.
I am far from placing the ballet girl In tbe same rank with an intellectual player: but thero are grades of quality In all fields. She Is a dancer, and loves dancing as an art, The pose into which she now throws herself With such abandon Is not a vile pandering to tbe ta-tc oMb segiggling men In the orchestra stalls, but Is au «Hurt which, to her Idea, is as loving a tribute to her beloved art aa a painter’s nearest pencil touch Is to him. "It is tney who are b-tl," said Mademols* lie B. to roe the other night: "it Is not we.” Those men who have Impure thoughts are the pertoni on whim censure should fall—not upon the devotees of an art which tbo dancer* Wa«nd embody to the best of their ability, and without ttny more Idea of Impurity because of the dress, which Is both tbe conventional and the Only practicable one, than sculptors or painters have when they use the femal* figure as a m* dnirn to convey (heir Idea* of poetry to the
Outside world.
But tlureis one set of exponent* of tbe ‘'nuked drama” on whom I am willing to join with the general public (n launching every possible Invtctlve of censure and reproach. 1 mean those women who are “neither fl>h, flesh nor fowl” of ih«tb«atr1eal creation—who are neither at tresses, dancers, pantomtmisti, nor bjllct girls, but who enjoy a celebrity more widely spread than any of these—all legitimate artists In their way—could hope to attain. It Is unpleasant to mention names; It is disagreeable and even dangerous to do so; but when such women as Cora Pearl, VestvaM, Menken, Kite Fisher, and their like, are insolent enough to Invade tbe stage, and Involve in tbe obloquy which falls on them hundreds of good and pure women, U Is time for tven tbe most tolerant critic to exprses disapprobation. VVha'evtr tbe private ebereeter of these women may be-however good, how. ever had—we are justified from their public exhibitions in denouncing them as shameless and unworthy. It Is true they make more money than any other class of "performer*:” more money than tbe poetic Edwin Booth; infinitely more than the intellectual JE. b- Dav. enport. Silfle conscience, honor aid decency, and mere nn ney making Is easy work. These women are not devotees of any art, With tbe exception of V'estvall —a failure on ere y lyric stage, both In Europe end America—they do not act, dunce, sing or mime; but they habit themselves In n way which Is attractive to an Indelicate taste, and their InefUulenoy In other regards is overlooked. With the public lie* the power to correct tble evil. The "leg business” Is a business which requires legs. That these should ba naturally symmetrical Is desirable, but not lodlepene••de, for tbe art of padding has reached such perfection that nature has almost been distanced, and stands, blushing at her own Inc< tnpieteness, in the background. New York can boast of some artistic "padders.” Strange to say, howeter, that Holy of Holies, tbe city of Philadelphia, bears off tbe palm In the pad making art. It Is generally supposed that pudding Is only employed In the enlarging and beautifying of the eatf of the leg, but this Is a mUtake. Such Inaccuracies as knock knee* and bowlegs, remarkable for their frequency in tbe human family, especially In those misguided members of it who heve rashly chosen the slag* a# a vocation, are nimbly rectified by the pad profesaor. I saw a letter from one of these the other day, which tmiT be worth producing her* for thoenho of Its ludlorousness, That It la a genuine document, 1 pledge my word. It ran thus:
