The fh Id was surrounded by vehtotoe, meetly filled with ladies, while a vast crowd allowed their curiosity to get the better of their eenee of propriety, and so encroached upon the domain set apart for tho playera ae to aartoualy annoy them and Induce the umpire to repeatedly declare the game "tied” until toe crowd could be driven back. THE NATIONALS. This club is composed of floe material. Phyeically, its members are eplendtd specimens of manhood, with every muscle perfectly disciplined and developed by constant practice. An almost uninterrupted series of tnumphe has given them a confidence in toemaelvea which no younger club possesses, and which is worth a great deal in deter**'•''** ia * ir °< )# * tests. I* they are perfect gentlemen .In their deportment and their intercourse with our boys was so kindly and courteous aa to reconcile the latter in a great measure, to toe bitterness of their

The following members of toe National either participated in or witnessed the game: Col nel Frank Jones and servant, George H. Fi x . .1. H. O'Neale, £. G. Smith, H. H. Bertoren:'. A. H. Coon, president of toe Umpire Base Bail Club, of Wa«blngton City; Henry Chadwick, editor Dali Player's Chronicle, and W.C. France, Cincinnati Base Ball Club. THE OAME. At sharp one the Nationals left the Bates House for the ground, and at half paet one game was oalled. The Nationals won toctoaa and went to field, putting the Weatorns out without their making a single run. This Inauspicious b ginning was a damper on toe Westerns, but they played pluoklly and wall, to the bitter end, frequently doing good work, which called forth demonstrations of applause from the- spectators. Bo use eon tending against superior aklll and greater practice, however, and the result showa a had beat— what would have been a shameful beat, had the Westers* been contending with anybody else than the Nationals. They have fared no worse, however, than the clubs of other and more pretentious eltlea-tbo average score of tho Nationals since leaving home having been six to one. The Western# also played under a disadvantage not forwoea, and against

MoVey hurt himself so badly, In attempting to stop a ball In the first innings, that he had to leave toe field, and on account of tho death of a relative, McDonald declined participating in the game. The play of the Nationals waa marked by wonderful batting. Many of them would meet a ball with such a blow of the bat as would send it flying, ae if abet from a catapult lar beyond toe fleldere, thus affording opportunities for the numeroue home runs their score exblblta. Their fielding was also good, and they are indebted in no small degree for toelr euccese to their pitcher, who knew Just exactly how not to do It. Of toe Westerns Barbour seemed to have the best luck in bitting tho National pitcher's balls, but like toe other Westerns be lacked the power or skill to send them far enough. The umpire, Mr. Coon, ia universally well spoken of. He manifested the greateet Impartiality as well as an accurate knowledge ot toe minutest i cgulationa of the game, which ha was not slow to anfore at occasion offered. TOE NATIONAL# "SKUNKRP.” • In their eighth tan laga on# of those fragrant events called a "skunk” happened to the Nationals—they going out without scoring a run. This to a little remarkable aa being the only occurranoa of too kind since they toft homo. It was evident they hid stranded on a bar, not more than half a mile from the main land, off Jersey coast, near Atlantic City. Precaution was taken to invent all with life preservers or excuses for them, which the steamer carried. After toying to get the steamer afloat, for some three hours, it was decided to try and land the passengers. There was a heavy sea and some appearances of a storm and no other hope of reltofuntll late at night or «•* ■*** morning.
