Mr. Mtint’iiY.lt scorns, by lecturing on tlio "Krror# of Item tn Catholicism,” attracted tho atteniion and excited the intest of many p< ra nis of Celtic anteetdents, professors of Itslalth the'/'lsm’’availed, who wore advlsod that every Popish priest was a murderer, a cannibal, a liar and a pickpocket:’’ that ba ( i Mt , nriiY)“wai prepared to meet any Popish priest, from Bishop UbLATIIOHMX to tbo blg< gest ragamuffin In the lot;” that “If ever there was a rag and hose gatherer lu tbe uni* verse It was the Pope himself”—and ao on to tho end of the chapter. SENATE.'
W ASiUNOTON, Tiresday, July 0.
Immediately after reading the Journal the Senate took up the reconstruction bill report-
Zd by Senator Trumbull yesterday.
Mr. Trumbull addressed tho Senate at length tn support of the bill. Ho said that be thought all would admit that for some period, (some m ike It shorter than others) hut for some period, whether a dav, a week, a month or a year, tho military had authority to p'-e-nerve peace and govern tbe country, ns far as necessary lor that purpose, until a’ civil government could be Inaugurated; hgwlong ibis military government cofifd bo contlfined Is a question left to tbe discretion of tho sovereign power of tbe United state*, exorcising Us authority tn the spirit of our Institutions and
subordinate to the Constitution.
I agree, sir, that this military power should not be continued a day longer than is neces•ary in tho subordinattoa of civil government In these rebel States which are loyal to the Union and constitution, but how long that Is to be is to be decided by circumstance* of which the sovereign Government end Congress of United States 1* tbe judge, not the exeeutivo nor judicial tribunals. Its a question over which tbe Judicial tribunals can have no Jorledlcllon. They can net try political ques-

been our yoal condition.
The nation was afflicted by a civil war, which for a time was an insurrection, which divided Its sway. We, at tbe period when we declared tbe blockade, admitted them, not to be a nation, but Independent bslltgsrents, raising them above an Insurrection and entitled them to all the privileges and subject to all tbe liabilities of an Independent belligerent. The nations of Europe so treated Utstn; we so treated them; In short, In fact, thsis can be no doubt of tbe tact that we wera at war astwo Independent nations. It depended on tbe conqueror whether be would treat the one vanquished after tbe war ae vanquished, or whether be should punish him for a violation of the *ovcTet*« »»«hts of the nation. We conquered. What did we conquer? We conquered the confederate government, We emquered all the State* forming the confederate -government, we conquered a government, 'which by tu own declaration owed no allegiance to tbeGovernment of tbe United Statee. It looke to me like a bold absurdity, yet was tbe doctrine of tbe President th j doetrtne which the gentlemen are fighting about? We declared them te be conquered provinces: we were treating them under military law. Now what ie tbe law In reference to pronnees conquered from a foreign power or an inde-

A Nashville mystery—in Which a Willow Basket sun* a Mir tag ef Corals Bitty m Pretty Pert-QaeerQBest ef a steady Citiaea—An Aristaeratie Outcast—A Lively Reuaaaee ter a Quiet Neightoerheed. Saturday morning, June 22, the “new advertisements ” of the Banner, were led off by the following announcement: A. C. B.—Duly received—tbe terms are agreed to. Address as above. All right. Willow Barut. There were many inqnlrtea made eonceraiag this Inexplicable and rather mysterious publication. Some considered Its pelitioal cypher relating to the organizing of a secret colored league, others regarded It as a catch or puzzle; and all were mystified. To the varleue questions which reached ns wa were not able to reply. Not until a day or two ago did we come Into tbo real facte of tbe case, and as tbey are not likely to injure any one, and may Indeed serve one of tbe purposes of tbe advertisement a* well as interest tbe public, we ■ball detail them. Sunday, tho 10th of June, was unusually soft and mild. Tbe rains of the evening before had cleared the atmosphere, and the sun rose only as it knows bow to rise in a pleasant dawn of June. One ol tbe most zealous readers and patrons of tbe Banner, who lives on Sumner street, rose with the sun, and, aa usual went to tbe front door for bis paper. He found it, not neatly folded by tba carrier, bat spread out over something upon which it had been carefullr placed. He lifted it ap and stood bock aghast. There lay on tbeetep, In a beautiful willow basket lined with light blue flannel, nestled in a world of ruffles and pretty linnen, a rosy, black eyed, new bora girl baby 1 He was startled and gave a loud exclamation, which brought down his wife, and the two surveyed the sleeping Infant, ' srblcb reposed like a little female Moses In its wicker arb. The wife looked furltively at the husband: tbe husbami Unshed and looked quizzically at the wife. Then both laughed outright. And finally—the surprise, the dumb show over—they toox up the basket, carried it within, and instituted a close inspection. it was an uncommon pretty baby. This tbe laday declared emphatically. Tho clothing— the gentlemen, who understands such matters, remarked—was uncommon fine. There was a sweet hood of delicate white cambric, lined with pink silk, a gown of delicate cashmere, aad dainty, tiny, thread knit stockings. Around the child’s neck a necklace of coral, clasped with gold, hung; and the pallet it lay on in tbe basket was a complete outfit of beautiful baby wear. Beneath all this was a let-

The gown concealed abeautiful portemonnaie, which contained five fresh new national hank twenty dollar notes —two on the Second National of Cincinnati, and three on the First and Fourth of St. Louis. There was, besides the coral necklace, a small gold chain and a
silver rattle.
Our friends considered the matter long and well, and tln illy resolved to accept tbe trust. Being poor but charitable people, reduced somewhat in mean*, but themselves childless, tbe burthen could not be very heavy. Accordingly, after a few aava’ consideration, they inserted the above advertisement in the Banner of the 22d of June. Three days later tbey received a note Inclosing 820 more, and these lines: ‘•Blessings on you; be faithful; you shall never repent your charity.” Since this last communication they have heard nothing more. The child I* remarkably well, and Is represented as particularly joyous and attractive. It crie* but seldom, has rosy cheeks and black eyes, and promises to be tbe image of . Alas, of whom? We shall not try te guess. The province of a newspaper is fact, not conjecture. We could surmise any manner of mystery; raake up all sorts of a romance; cause anxiety, and wring woman’s heart. But we forbear. The case, as it stands, is unique and curious. It bas a city flavor about it, and Is certainly pretty good for Nashville. Those who wi»h to highten the mystery may find material for the purpose In their own imaginations. We merely furnish the rough draft of outline.

Stories from a Purls Coffee House. Tbe Paris correspondent of the London Star sty a: A few years ago a man of certain age, very well dressed and gentlemanly In appearance, frequented Tortonl , s, and every morning asked for a cup of coffee add a roll. He one day went away without paying; the same circumstance occurred the second and even the third day. The garcon informed the proprietor. “ C’est bien, ,, replied the latter; “ serve tbe gentleman as usual, and do not pay tbe least attention.” For one year this went on, when suddenly the customer disappeared. Tbe proprietor bad almost forgotten him, when to bis surprise be received, carriage paid, twelvscbests of coffee and twelve bales of sugar. A letter accompanied these singular packages, stating that the writer was a rich planter ot Maitlnque, who for some time had been in difficnlties, and begged thus to acknowledge tbe polite kindness of his host, who tor one year had allowed htifi to run in debt to him.
