-Gold eloaed la New York, yesterday, •t *1 36^. —General Samuel Fasten den, of Maine, a brother ol the Senator from that State, declines the poeMou of AsMetaaf Secretary of the Treasury, which has been tendered him He prefers his position fit the patent ofice. -Advices received by the Government show that General SberldM bee removed 44 of the police three at Galveeton, Texas, an dm count of disloyalty, and that he has also organized a military oommteeten for tie trial of ctvlUme and others charged with crime. —A correspondence has Just been completed between Secretary Seward and Baron Stoeekel, wherein the purchase of the Russian Possessions has been formally acknowledged by both governments, although the money has not been paid over and will not be until -an appropriation !• made by Concrete. The Russian minister informed Secretary Seward that >the officials in Russian Amsrlca had l>een Instructed ;to admit all United States vessels to their ports free of doty. —The Maryland Democratic Const!tOtloaal Convention has disposed of the negro testimony question by adopting a provision declaring that no person shall be InObmpent aa a witness on account of race or color, unlesa hereafter so declared to be by act of the General Assembly. —The telegraph to the Cincinnati Commercial report that the newt of the remeval of Governor Wells, of Louisiana, did not reach Washington until Tuesday afternoon. General Sheridan did not telegraph to General Grant’s headquarters, and the intelligence was not credited until the official order came to the press. The action of the military officials, howevar, was auttelpatsd somewhat by tbe Government, for the reason that It war advised. a few days since, that General Sheridan bad practically suspended Governor Wells by the Iseusnee of an order prohibiting him from making any removals or appointments under tbe estate of the Government, without tbe same being grst approved by the general rnmmanding the military district. The Louisianians In Washington, who have been urging the President to remove Governor Wells, state that he will eertalaly revoke General Sheridan’s order. They arrive at this conclusion from conversations bad with Mr. Johnson on this very question. —Thomas J. Durant, whom General Sheridan has appointed Governor of I^>uieiana, Is In Washington, and states that he will not accept the appointment. —A royal order has been Issued In Ilwana, valuing slaves at four hundred dollars. This Is looked upon as a decided step toward the abolition of slavery. —Tbe action of General Sheridan in tbe removal of Governor Wells on tbs herls of tbe demand of the President asking an explanation for the removal of Governor Wells’ levee commissioners, is regarded by tbe Preatdent’a friends in Washington as an inault to him, which will render certain Sheridan's speedy removal and reversal of all hla actions. —The heaviest thunder storm ever known, passed over Cincinnati on Tueaday afternoon, doing considerable damage. —There were 273 deaths In Cincinnati last

month.

—A mixed convention of Republicans wa* held In Montgomery, Alabama, on Tueaday. The officers were equally divided among the harmonious races. General Swayne, Governor Patton and others were present. A motion to Invite Judge Busterd to tbe platform was violently opposed by tbo negroes. On Us being renewed in tbo afternoon session the Macon county delegation adjourned. —On account of unexpectedly large receipts of a miscellaneous character from Internal revenue, toward the close of last month, and small requisitions from other departments, the statement of tbe Secretary of the Treasury will not only show a large currency balance in tbe Treasury, but a considerable reduction of tbe National debt. —It appears that Ashley Is Inconsolable on account of tbe action of the Judiciary Committee in refusing to report tbe resolution of Impeachment, and be baa been feeling In tbe streets and visiting newspaper correspondents to wake up sympathetic paragraphs in behalf of the tmpeacbers with vigorous emphasis, supported by a few unmentionable words. He proclaims bis determination to force the Judiciary Committee, when It meets on the 26th instant, to reconsider their action and failing of success In this, be will eompel the House to vote on the question. The action of the committee is, however, approved by nearly all of tbe Republican* In Washington. From the New York Commercial Advertiser, (Republican.) ( nlan aad DlaaalMB. Mr. Greeley uttered no truer sentiment tbsn when he avowed that “ tbe war for and against tbe Union, ended two years ago, at tbe surrender of General Lee, and that the time for peace has come.”—Charleston Courier. Unfortunately, this was only for the Southern market. The Tribune, notwithstanding Mr. Orkxi.ky's speech at Richmond, has been sustaining Congress for two years in keeping the Union and the people divided. We of tbe North started right, against secession and In favor of the Union. But tbe war over, our leaders came to tbe conclusion that they cenld elect a radical President by keeping tbe Union divided. And in this they have bad the support of tbo Tribune, though Its editor, when In Richmond, talked " peace.” We could have bad “ peace ” In 13G5, II auch Journals aa the Tribune had acted upon Mr. Lincoln's plan for restoring tbe Union. staase Hems a.
