Ml/.zard Cents.—For several days an impression has prevailed that the nickel one cent coins issued by the Government some years since, and ornamented with an impossible fowl spreading itself in rapid llight, were worth a fabulous amount in consequence of a blunder at the mint, by which they were alloyed with gold instead of coppc-. Yester* day the excitement culminated. All day hundreds of boy brokers ransacked the grocery stores, drug stores, butcher shops, drinking houses, and every quarter where the nickels might reasonably be supposed to have accumulated, buying them up at prices ranging from four to twenty cents. They even stop, ped gentlemen on the street comers, and anxiously inquired lor buzzard niekles. The trade was not confined to young financial geniuses of the Caucasian race. On thecontrary ( quite the reverse. We saw at least half a dozen promising African scions, raving mad with the nickel fever, and raging around in all possible and impo.-slble localities. Wv are sorry to spoil the tratlic in these nickels^ but we arc afraid that some of the gentlemen who employed the boy brokers to rans:ick the city yesterday have put their feet in it. Most of tlie nickels bought up ut prices rnnging from four to twenty cents are worth just one cent—only that, and nothing more. The buzzard nickel of 1S5U, with a buzzard on one side and Indian’s head on the other, is worth twenty-five cents at the mint in Philadelphia, on account of a blunder in coinage. Uut few of these precious coins, however, are in circulation. The cents of lb.57 and 18.VS, large numbers of which have been bought up at a premium, are worth one cent and no more. A good story Is told, at thu expense of a shrewd banker. A boy named Miller, employed in the Indiana Banking Company, read a paragraph In a paper stating that the buzzard nickels were worth twenty-five cents. He quietly collected several bags full. In the meantime the excitement increased, and a banker of the city embarked largely in the nickel business. To lie sure about It, young Miller wrote to the mint at Philadelphia, and received an answer, saying that the nickels of ISs. were worth twenty-five cents, but that

beginning with tlie London Provident Life, then referring to the Habncman JLiIe, and lastly to the Atlantic Mutual Life, organized at Albany, New York, each striving to improve upon its predecessor, until now we have in the one last named a company embodying all the desirable features of a mutual company, giving to the patrons of Homeopathy tlie full benefltof that system of practice. >. The homeopathic profession of Missouri. Responded to by Dr. Franklin. The doctor stated that the heaviest mm of the liomcnpathic professlon were found in Missouri, i himself weighing 210;) that he considered Missouri far ahead of that section ol country which abounded in vast plains and mighty rivers, and that it was the effort of the profession to elevate the scientific status of homeopathy. ». The science of Imng. Responded to by Prof. Wilson. The doctor said that very few persons understood how to live; that to exist comfortably, a man must possess good clothing, a good place to sleep, something good to eat and drink, certain recreations, and many other adjuvants to life, but it was astonishing to what extent these necessaries were carried. He then made appropriate remarks on how to live, and live properly. 10. The Materia Alimcntaria. Responded to by Dr. Hale, who said there were many points of similarity between the Materia Medlca and the Materia Alimentaria. The ingredients of both were proved on the healthy, alter being taken In massive doses frequently caused excessive pains, and were derived from all kingdoms of nature, anil that being impossible to subsist without them they were both necessary to tho welfare of
man.
11. The physicians of Indianapolis, our worthy hosts. In responding to this, Dr. Burnham said he regretted that more time had not been allowed them to prepare a fitting reception for the members of the Institute. Indiana had now taken a start in the right direction, and that she bad intended to push forward the cause of Homeopathy until every quarter of the State—north, south, east ami west—should triumphantly unfurl the banner of the immortal Hahnenan. 12. The 1’ress. Responded to l.y Mr. Jacobs. He sold the call was very unexpected, hut be was ever ready to respond to such a toast. That the press was the lever that moves the world and that, though sometimes abused, its evils were more than counterbalanced by the good that it bad done. Tbe press of Indianapolis waanot a whit behind that of the larger cities of the West, and the dally periodicals, though not perhaps so much given to self laudation, were yet possessed of much intrinsic merit. He then eloquently alluded to the good which had been done to the medical profession.
