Omaha dispatches say that the Governor of Montana, and suite, left there for Fort Benton on the steamer Octavia, on Sunday. An escort of ninety men, en route for camp Cook, accompanied the party. Col. Lowis, of the 36th Infantry had arrived from Virginia city to organize volunteers for service against the Indians in the Gallatia [sic] valley, should they be required. The Cheyennes are committing petty depredations on the Platte route. The persons belonging to the Pacific Railroad engineering party, and reported killed in the Black Hills, some time since, have turned up alive. They had not even been attacked. About three thousand Ogallas and Brule Sioux, under Spotted Tall and Swift Bear, are near Fort McPherson asking subsistence from the Government. They have been driven from their hunting grounds, on the Republican and its tributaries, by the operations of the troops against hostile tribes. These bands profess great friendship for the whites. Little interruption occurs to trains upon the roads from Forts Sedgwick and Laramie

north.

The escorts of Major Freeman, fifty men. and a herd of beef cattle went through to Fort Phil. Kearney with slight loss. His skirmishers and flankers kept the Indians at a respectful distance. Returning to Fort Reno on the 3d of May they met Major King carrolled [sic] at Crazy Woman’s Fork. The train had been attacked and lost twelve

head of cattle.

Major King reported the number of Indians at 150, some of them being mounted.

—Last winter a dispatch wm sent from Washington stating that the President bad tendered Horace Greeley s place in the Cabinet.
