Hoot to'* Diary.

The Journal of yesterday say*:

« The copperhead press have been exceedingly anxious of late, that the diary of Booth, the assassin, should be published, and have indulged in some ominous inuendocs as to ^mc fearful things recorded therein which ihe ogre Stanton feared to have see the light." That’s- pretty heavy on the Secretary of War. When his peculiar friends term him « ogr» Stanton," or infernal demon Stanton, well may he exclaim, save me from such friendships! It was not the “copperhead press" which “ have been exceedingly anxious of late, that the diary of Booth should be published." ft was such radical papers as the New York Tribune, the Cincinnati Commercial, and that ilk, that were clamoring for the publication of the diary. It was "bottled up” BUTT.hr, a confiscation and anti-reconstruc-tion radical, who opened the ball in regard to the diary and its spoliation, charging that if it had not been mutilated by some of the "loyal olficers of the Government, it would hajc substantiated the innocence of Mrs. Surratt. Anil the telegraph of this morning states that •• Beast " BrTl.RR, In a card, notwithstanding the assertion of "ogre Stanton" and Jon JIot,t', that the diary ol Booth is just as it was when taken from his person after be was slain, still insists that it was spoliated by Government officials, and that nothing has yet transpired, in his opinion, to weaken his charges in regard to it. If the diary was an Innocent affair, and bad no bearing upon the conspiracy for the assassination of President Lincoln, or upon the persons charged as co-conspirators or accomplices with Booth, why was it so carefully withheld l com the public, even after the terrible <»i- • I aught of Bun.Fit on Binoji am, whose only exploit, he said, during the rebellion, was the h inging of an ••innocent woman?" The pertinacity of Butler in adhering to his former. , xpressions in regard to the matter, which arc certainly not creditable to the parties engaged in the prosecution of the assassination trials, i, somewhat singular, unless he has some evidence to sustain the stand he has taken. And the whole affair is a radical mystery, we oppose we shall have to await development-, which will surely transpire, to arrive at the facts in the case. There is an old maxim to he elfeet that when rogues fall out honest inVn are apt to get their dues, and the little differences which BuTI.KR, Orkelky and other leading radicals have raised In the radi cal camp, will undoubtedly develop much of the hidden rascality among the radical leaders luring the past six years, but it will take volumes to give an inkling even of the bight, and depth and breadth of their wi, kedne-s.

Protectionist Theories.

A Chicago high tariff paper tells us that •• consumption is not the only or chief end of man.” If, in reference to matters within the sphere of political economy, consumption is not the end, will that journal inform us what Is? What Is the end or objector production, if nut consumption? The same paper assures us that “ no one is fit to live who is not adding to the productive force of the world.” This is rather hard upon lunatic and disabled paupers, and the whole tribe of infants and little boys and girls. It may perhaps squint at those amiable Individuals—retired gentlemen and ladies who, having accumulated capital, spend without earning, and Instead of entering into competition with producers pay those producers, thus making their work mon profitable than it would be without such patronage. That journal may imagine that it is benefiting the producers but the latter will be -low to see the benefit. ,

Andersonvlllc reran* Camp .tlorton. Hjj would be glad to have the Journal answtr us a plain, simple question. If the rebels deliberately starved and tortured our prisoners to death in their vile prison pens, why is iCthat the reports of the War Department* -how a greater proportion of deaths among rebel prisoners in the North than among Union prisoners in the South? Why is it that rebel prisoners at Camp Morton, Johnson’s Island, and other points, who were kindly treated, comfortably clothed, well fed, and scientifically doctored, died out of the service more rapidly than our own men who were starved, frozen, shot, Inoculated with hospital gangrene, and otherwise fiendishly tortured to death In the hells of Belle Isle, Salisbury and Andersonville? - - Kelley’* Bonst. The 1’liarisee.s are still whining over Kelley's grief at Mobile. Their latest dodge is to deny that he boasted of having the entire military foroe,of the Government at his back. In a late number of the Mobile Timm vre found the following extract from his brutal

speech:

"One word I have to say: Xubmiij hatl better undertake to put me dmrn. 1 tdl you the Fifteenth United^ States infantry are at my back, and if the Fifteenth United States in-

A 31m Waif. Rev. Dr. Butler, the well known Methodist missionary who entablishedthe mission of that church in India in Iftfitl, recently returned to thi* country. He makes the following statement of a remarkable case: In Itto!) a British soldier, while bearing a dispatch from one magistrate to another in the Kingdom of Oude, passed an unfrequented ravine, where he saw a pack of wolve*, and with them a human being, evidently one of their company. Immediately turning back be

to the place. The pack of wolves lied a short distance and sought refuge in a sort of cave or den. Beginning to dig. the party soon discovered the feet of the wild man, and, drawing him forth, succeeded in binding and carrying him to the town. Dr. Butler ha* seen him often since, and says he is evidently a man, and at the time of his capture apparent-

ly about twenty-four years of age.

The captured creature at first violently resisted the attempt to put clothing upon him. but after a while ceased to tear the garment. Hu is now kept by a gentleman in the city of Thaje-Yampore, some eight hundred miles west of Calcutta. When first taken he was unwilling to eat anything but raw- meat, and has never been able to speak or make any approximation to a knowledge of the alphabet. H any one looks earnestly or sharply at him. In’expresses his annoyance by a half uttered grunt, immediately turning away and settling up >n lu- haunches In a corner of the room, or lie- ,|. w n.
