We enter our solemn protest against the increase of the mayor’s salary, and against the payment ot any salary whatever to the city judge. General Maeatlley accepted tho nomination for mayor as the office then stood, with its salary attached, ami has no right to demand an Increase. The duties of the office are light, since It has been separated from the city court, and the position is universally regardas one of honor rather than of emolument. It takes up but a small portion of his time, and interferes, to a nominal extent only, with the transaction of other business. There Is not a

We do not know what promises w*re held out to General Maeatlley when he was Induced to retire from the contest for the State printing; but we do know that no one bad any right to promise him anj thing, or at least to bind the i ..unoil by any promise made to him. As for the city judge, we understand that the fees of that oilier, under Mayor Caven’s administration, averaged from live to sl\ thousand dollars per annum. This, of Itself, ought to -atisfy the need* of a modest young lawyer, whose practice in Ihe courts certain-

Yet notwithstamling these evidences of healthy loyalty on the part of Colonel Barker, here comes Dr. Jameson with an ordinance materially interfering with his little “ perks." Republics anil R-publievns are proverbially ungrateful. It is barely possible, however, that the party in power have noted the fact that the tax payers arc getting restive under their burthens. The people are not willing to pay quite as much for loyalty as they were a year or two since, and our rubjr* are driven to retrenchment in despite of their inclinations.
