The people Inhabiting the northwest coast of America, from the fortieth to the sixtieth degree of latitude, are, to all appearance, the offshoots or branches of a single stem. The language ot the inhabitants of the Colombian river is almost precisely similar to that of the natives of Kootka Sound. Each tribe has a distinct name; but in the Russian American Colonies, all are comprised under the generic
name of “Kaloches.”
The Kaloches of Sitka recognize as the founder of their race, a man who they call Klkb, who dwelt under the especial favor and protection of the crow, a bird whom they worship as the first cause of all things. Among the Kodtai'ks, who are evidently of the great Esquimaux race, it is held that the crow was
