—An instance ol an altered violation of the civil rights bill occurred at New York. A colored woman who w is a passenger on a ferryboat was ejected from t’ic cabin designated for white women, by the captain of the boat. A complaint was made to the mayor, who issued a warrant for the arrest of the captain, and ho was taken into custody. The case will bo heard to-day. —The siege of Vera Cruz continues without much activity on either side. The Impeyalists hope that the coining yellow fever will compel the Liberals to raise the siege. Uls said that the latter have a strong war steamer at Tampico which will soon arrive and IdfTckadc the port of Vera Cruz. —An immense reform meeting was held in London on the l-lth. Some present were disposed to accept the Cabinet concessions, but Mr. John Bright spoke in opposition to such

llKitT.iN, May 17—Evening.—A meeting of Americans was held in this city, to-day. in

mittee, Is for the purpose of having him de- ' tail certain conversations which he is reported to have had with Jeff. Davis. A letter from New Orleans says that returns from registration in Louisiana show that but very few white people are being registered. In St. Charles parish, for instance, the registry shows the names of 315 colored men toll whites, and m St. Bernard parish the names of 300 colored men to sj whites. —The Interest in tho reconstruction of the I.indell Hotel is being revived in St. LouD, and the subscriptions now amount to eight hundred thousand dollars. The pirtles having the matter in charge are making a thorough and systematic canvass of the > ity, and are meeting with great encouragcm-nt. — The Land Office has issued a m-.v map of the United States, containing the b nindarics uplo date, but has omitted the colonial possesions. ft is more complete in all that pertains to the mining re 'inns than any before published. - The Supreme Court dlsm‘ sod the amended .Mississippi bill Thursday, and adjourned till December. There have been many attempts to ascertain how tbe Court stood on the v inousjihases of these injunction cases. It serins certain that various justices have desired an opinion to tie read this term, lint they were overruled. One in a position to know, asserts that In the absence of Grier, the Court stooil four to four on the amended bill. ifovenue f.aav. ^ The press, irrespective of party, condemns the law passed by the late radical Congress, as an amendment to the nineteenth section of the internal revenue act, as follows: “.Yo suit fir the. purpose of rostra ininj the a^sossntes! or rolli rtinii of av>i las shall he maintain' l in itn‘i r iui'i.” This virtually subjects the property of all citizens to lift contisrated by exhorbi; tut taxation. Assessors and collectors arc relieved from all restraint, and ran ! vy their exactions without control. Such vast p r.v r conferred in a form so absolut • and irresponsible is truly alarming^ and cm not but lead to much oppression and injustic. Batter matt the Cmspiracjr Cases. General Butler has indicated, these several days putt, that he has yet in reserve his strongest card against Mr. Bingham’s conduct of tbe conspiracy. It U supposed that he relates more particularly to certain notes and data derived from Mr. John T. Ford, tbe proprietor of tbe theater, wherein President Lincoln met his desth, and who. It will be remembered, was imprisoned for six weeks in the Old Capitol with a score or more of persons arrested upon suspicion of complicity. The conversations and general communication had among these prisoners, together with the affrighted utterances ot the Government witness, Weicbman, then under duces*, arc said to have made up important conversations affecting the theory of guilt and innocence, ail of which Mr. Ford had committed to a diary, and now submits to the keeping of Butler.— Washington Correspondence Cincinnati Gazette.

Cartel Jewelry. The special correspondent of tbe London Times at the French Exhibition says that coral has risen enormously in estimation as an article of Jewelry. Pieces that live or six years ago would have sold at twenty shillings an oum-e now fetch one hundred times that sum. Formerly, too, the dark red coral was the most esteemed; now it has yielded the place of honor to the rose piuk variety. Whether this new taste is a mere ephermcral caprice that will die out remains to be seen; but It is certain that coral, which but a few years since held a secondary place a8 aa article of personal ornament, no w commands in the rough a price equal to about twenty times its weight in gold. A funny matrimonial affair recently occurred near Spirit Lake. Minnesota. A green justice married three couples tn one batch, and about four weeks afterwards discovered that a license from the clerk of the court was necessary to make the ceremony legal, and he loyt no time in forming the parties that they were still single, though they had lived together tbe intervening time. The first couple were willing so risk the consequences; tbe second consented to be remarried; while the third, having discovered tn each other divers and sundry shortcomings, refused to have tbe knot retied—being satisfied that one month of matrimony, and glad to revert to single blessedness.
