Kirks.-The number of small fires are becoming quite nunjprous, within the last day or so, and It seems that tbe spirit of conflagration has been so long confined that when once started Is goes on a perfect rampage. In addition to tbo two fires, of Wednesday, mentlonel i« yesterday's issue, another broke out in the shoo stofe of Messrs. J. W. Iredell A Co., nt abjtjptwelve o’clock of the night before last. In this case the alarm was promptly given and the fire extinguished before It had burned a column through one set of shelves, on the sldo of and above tbe center of the room, and dlstroyed one counter, though considerable damage was done to the stock of boots and shoes on hand by the heat and water and the steam their coming together produced. That the flro did not become more serious was owing to Captain Wilson and his police who prevented the breaking open of tbo doors until the engines arrived and were ready to put water on the Ore—Messrs. Iredell A Co., desire to return especial thanks to them for their exertion-. Although It will be necessary to do considerable refitting, painting and whitewashing, tbo gentlemen expect to open their house ngain on Monday morning. Their
stock was insured.
The last flro that has occurred, up to the hour of writing this article, was at about seven o’clock fvsterday morning, and by which parts of tlycc stables in the rear of the Oriental House were destroyed. In this, as most of the other cases, the eause'of the fire was ui^cnown ami inexplicable, and furnishes sufficient evidence for a suspiciously inclined person to has" a belief in incendiaries—there is a large number of unprincipled and reckless characters now congregated in the city and It would not require mu. b urging to induce us to lioliovo tbat/nme of Ihiee tiros were started intentionally and wilb the hope that it would furnish nn opportunity for stealing.
