In the cause of Thomas rs. The only reason why this dish does not appear upon the bills of fare at the Circle Restaurant Is because of the unusual shortness of the elephant crop this season. Rbodius has everything else that is in season. He Camk.—Hugh Delzell did. That is, he brought a No. 1 cutter around yesterday afternoon to take us a ride. We did not go our•elf, but sent a deputy, who reported progress. Hugh’s horse Is called “Ghost,” and as a go-lst he Is an eminent success; so are all his teams, and his sleighs are second to none In the city. Give him a call, If you want to take a fast and a good ride. Live Stock.—Under the influence ol n large supply ol cattle, of a superior quality to what has been offered for sometime, tho market was quite lively and many butchers bought largely though at figures not quite up to our last quotation. The sales up to eleven o’clock A. M., were at from four to five cents per pound gross. Nothing was doing in any other description of animals as there were neither hogs, she: p ■or veal calves In the^pens. United State* Circuit Court.—In the ease of Gregg vs. Haines, judgment was rendered against the defendant fbr *400. For violation of the Internal Revenue laws, George Burrows was fined *10, each, in two cases, and *25 In another; William A. Willard *10, and the case of llenry llummell a nolle prosequi was entered. The case of Roberts and Wilson r». Pattison, In chancery, was dismissed, yulte a number of other cases were continued until the next term. Police Court.—The time of his honor, the mayor, was yesterday fully occupied In the disposition of the cases that were brought up as the result of a raid on a dance house, the moral character cf which was more than doubtful. Considerable consternation was created In consequence of this “ pulling,’’as aome of the young gentlemen arrested were •upposed to be well connected. Quit a number of “ mokes” were, also, up for disturbing religious services, but we did not wait for the disposal of their cases. Pork.—The supply of hogs still continues large, and the prospect Is that slaughtering will continue, on a small scale, for a considerable length of time. Th6 stork still held Is In small lots, and generally by men who paid high prices for their stock, and then ted them, and who find It hard to come down to the ruling prices. Considerable anxiety to sell is row manifested, however, and they are freely offered at from *5 76 to *5 00, grose, though there Is no disposition at present to take lees. Messrs. E. Waterfalls.—No vagary of the fashionmakers has more puzzled male bipeds than that exceedingly ornate and somewhat complex adornment of the female basilar region which Is known by the generic name of waterfall. The dismay which the appearaaoe of these monstrous masse* of hair and other material first created in masculineotroloahavlaff In a measure subsided, ourloelty takes the place of astonishment, and w# wonder how they arc made. To a female friend wa we In* dobted for some Interesting infcrmatlon on the subject. A genuine waterfall i* entirely of hair—the hair of dead people, mayhap—but still hair. But hair, aid especially human hair, is costly, and various lubterfugea are resorted to for tho purpose of producing a good counterfeit, “well calculated to decolv* 1 ” The genersl plan is to procure enough * glr tor a thin outer coatlog of the waterfaV, * n<1 stuff the cavity with straw, moes, »**vlngs, rags, or sny cheap substance xThlch may come handy. Ills alleged the* waterfalls, picked up in the street, h*r« 1**® found to contain turnips, bars of *o*Pi socks, and other fragrant subsUaccs; hut our Informont docs not
vouch for tbD.
In regard to the attachment of a waterfall we are not so weil posted. It Is generally artistically and securely done, however, with such extraneous adornment of beads, combi, or net work, as may suit the wearer. It will not do to plaeo impliett credence In the numerous cases of waterfall loss reported la tho newspapers. They are generally manufactured by hard-up locals for the emergency. But occasional cases do occur, and then the distress of the fair mourner is really pitiable. No matter what the business on hand, shopping, making calls, or charity, It Is left unfinished, and she makes a bee line for home. She fancies that everybody is looking at the vacant territory lately covered by her waterfall, and In the street car she nestles close in the corner, maintaining a rigid Immobility which is
truly painful, to behold.

To-night there will be again a change, and tfco great speciality of Mr. Chanfrau, th* “American CouitE «t Home,” will be offered as the evening’* entertainment. Saw JliEta.—The Eagle Machine Work* Comp*M7 have Just shipped two of their cel*, bysted twenty-flve hone power portable mw mills, one to Owen county, this State, and the other to Logansport, and la a few days they will send another of the same kind to Llgania, Indiana. These mills are all supplied with Hamilton’s lever set head block, for which they hare the exclusive right of manufacture in this city and county, the worth of which la best attested by the fact that the company owning the patent has the largest patronage, for saw mills, of any firm In the West—all gained by these heal blocks, too, as their hollers are not as good as those manufactured by either the Eagle Machine Works or Messrs. Sinker A Co., of this city. New Bed Bottom.—Messrs. Spicer A Reitz have purchased from the patentee, the right for the State of Indiana of Scott’s Patent Bed Bottom, and Mr. John Bussey, In their interest, has opened an office at the Spencer House, where he will dispose of county rights, or receive and fill orders for the bottom itself, five hundrej of which will be here soon, and are furnished at the extremely low figure of six dollars. This bottom took the first premium at the State fairs of Illinois, Wisconsin ami Minnesota;- also, the first premium at the several county fairs where it has been exhibited. It Is highly recommended as being the best bed bottom ever manufactured, and is In general use In several of the principal hotels in Milwaukee, Janesville, Madison, Sioux City, Lacrosse, and Beloit City, Wisconsin; also, in Chicago, Rockford, Reedsburg, Galena, Aurora, Quincy and Elgin, Illinois; Jackson, Kalamazoo and Adrian Michigan. It Is made of slats Joined together In the shape of a spring mattress, with rubber supporters at either end, giving it much greater elastUity and spring than any other bottom we ever saw All who see It will bs at once struck with Ita utility, and thaf it Is designed to be a very saleable article. Persons desirous of procuring tho bed bottoms had better apply Immediately, as Mr. Bussey Informs us the orders are coming in faster than they can be supplied. Several dogs arc said to have come to an untimely death ol late by this creature. —The good folks of Marlon and Patoka townships, Piko county, are somewhat puzzled about some cantankerous, ravenous beast that is killing the sheep In great numbers. Tbc animal catches the sheep ami eats off the nose—“no other marks or brands perceivable,” save, once In a while, one is found with scratches on the shoulder. The oldest hunters In that region can not decide what kind of an animal It Is. Various conjectures are afloat, gome say wolf, some panther, an.I so on. Its howl, or hark, is said to be hideous, and at times very painful. Madison has two large starch factories.

An Elegant Sweet Gam. There are a vast number of persons who utterly abhor the Idea of being forced to swallow physic— Plllt, especially—at a period of time when their own conscience tells them they peed medicine. To those who make wry faces, shrug their shoulders, and shake their head, with an oh, dear, sort of a countenance, let them procure the only reliable kind, Radway’a Regulating Pills. They are tasteless, being coated with sweet gum, a vegetable substitute for calomel or mercury, and they act upon the system quietly and mildly, so as not to purge heavily, or outrage upon the stomach, but rather tone the Liver, set at rights the Bowels as nature demands. In that* workings they are marvelous, and where Help or Death batb a voice, these Pills have saved tens and tens of thousands of lives. They are warranted to effect a positive eure in cases like Dyspepsia, Bilious Fever, Piles, Disagreeable Nervousness, Hysteria, and particularly those severe diseases caused by a disordered Liver. Whenever tho digestive organs require a regulator, Uadway’i Regulating Pills should be used in every case. Price 95 cent* per box. Sold by Druggists. JanS dAwlw

SoLDnOt* Monument.—In his message to the General Assembly, Governor Morton called their attention to the subject of erecting a fitting monument fn the soldiers’burying ground at Crown iyy Cemetery, and. In order that the question may be presented to them in manner that Han be properly understood, Messrs. T. 8. .lames A Co., whose marble works are situated at 136 South Meridian stfect, have drayvn a design for a monument, ami Intend offering it tor consideration. It Is to lie oj I'.illin mirble, with a base of twelve feet, and luirty-five feet high. On sub bases will be the ^tate seal, tbe figure of an eagle embracing the olive branch and arrows, and a drum and bugle beneath It, and on either side are colugans, with military etfiblems, supporting the material emblem, “ Tbe Eagle.” Tbe Goddes- of Liberty surmofints the whole, holding in one band the national banner tho other p"i ting down to tbe graves of the brave boys » jo fought and died to preserve the intcgrltv "C our Government. enumerated the “ Devils
Tears,” a speculation which may cause the loss of many an eye or other accidents. Sure, according to the label, they ire patented in Franco, England, the United States, etc., but this will not lessen their dangerous character. They are little oval, or round, red colored tilings, enclosed In glass tulies, closed on both ends by corks, and arc sold in Paris at tbe rate of half a franc for tbe dozen. Each of these “ tears’ contaiifl a small piece of ‘ natrium metal,” covered with cotton saturated with petroleum and collodlum, colored with
cochineal.
Tbe toy Is founded on a well known chemical process, but well gotten up, for the effect upon persons not acquainted with the appearance will not be lost, for as soon as the Devil'* Tears are thrown on some water contained on a plate, tbe natriummetal will dissolve under a peculiar whizzing sound, and sometimes lgniting tbe petroleum explode with a report. The Instruction for use contains the warning not to take the Devil’s Tears In tbe mdutb, but touching them with wet hands may as well create a premature explosion, scattering of fire, dangerous burns, etc., not to speak of tbe fact that tbe caustic contained in the water, after a regular execution of tbe trick, is very apt to ruin dresses, carpets, etc. l^ss hazardous is another chemical novelty, the Vesuvious Tea. It Is a mixture of aimple and bi-ctiromic ammonium, which, when heated In a spoon over burning alcohol, will expand Into a leafy abape looking aometbing like a tea, or other small plant. The chromic acid la also poisonous, and requlrea careful handling, on account of the children; but ns it does not look like anything to eat there Is less danger of accidents, and when transformed Into ’tea’ it has changed Into green chrom-ox-yde, which is not poisonous. Still more Interesling and less dangerous Is the “ Wunder, or Grass Paper," which is likewise preprred with chromic arid, and which, when lighted, will produce the prettiest forms of plants, grass, flowers, fruits, etc. During tbe recent session ol the Equal Rights Convention, • In one of our eastern cities, a strong minded female entered a crowded street railroad car. An old gentleman rose to give her a seat, but asked, “ Be you one of those women's righters?” “I be,” “You believe a woman should have all Ihe rights of a man?” “Yes, I do.” “Then stand up and enjoy them like a man I” and stand up she did.

To my old patients, and the many friends who have so kindly and generously aided my endeavors to mitigate the ravages of consumpi ion by curing those diseases that so sorely lead to it, I am very grateful, and shall endeavor to merit their approbation in the future, as In the past. To TmruBLic I have to say that I do not consider It necessary to present further testimonials to your notice at this time, having, during the past year, given you statements and reports from the most reliable parties of over a hundred cases successfully treated. Thin certainly should give confidence to those who are still suffering. Bkjr Consultitlon free, and terms of treatment within the reach of all. Yours, etc. decl8 d3meodlstor4thp DR. J. HALE.
