MY Gfar Friknd: Your unexpected letter of the 20th, directed te St, Louis, came to me here this day. I thank you for the evidence of

your valued friendship.

The political part of your letter Is interesting to me, although I am no politician. During the war, I supported the Government against the rebellion with ail my zeal. Whatever 1 had of material or moral resouress, was always ieady for Us aid In that cause. I believed that unless the integrity, power and dignity of the Government was not sustained, we had nothing to live for as a people and nation. This great necessity was accomplished, and a new sentiment ana duty Involved upon us. We had a shattered country. It had to be gathered up and nurtured In tenderness. We bad a Government, the fundamental principles of whose organization and existence wan fraternity. We had to call together the broken fragments of the party and harmonize them again into friendship and unity. It was no time for intolerance and uncbarltableness. Contrary to this, It seems to me that (he fletion of our Congress has been characterized by an implacable and malignant spirit of persecution against their countrymen who were engaged ill the rebellion. Thsir treasonable efforts to break up the Government had resuited in defeat, prostration and poverty to them and their States, fn addition to this the Congress seemed to destns to eobteel fbem feundvina mortification, and to mako them the

BLOUHER-S invention is a double c i vessel, shaped like a coffin, with vent

uttors at the top and bottom of each side, so that for can circulate freelv. To preserve a corpse, this xinc case is placed inside a wooden case, large enough to leave two and a half or three inches space between the two, which is filled with fee. ’’he body after being dressed for burial, ia placed inside the xinc case, where it can remain for any length of time, without in. the least being moistened, the intervening space between the two plates of sine being ventilated, prevents any dampness from the ice on the inside. By this means the body is preserved perfect and nmnral. and eaa ho removed to a coffin without the trouble of changingthe clothes and drying it, which is necessary in cases where ice is placed directly on the body, as was the old mode of preservation. aug* -UPn
