A TALK FROM *" BRICK n POMtBOY.
A large meeting of the Democrats and Conservatives of Indianapolis, assembled in the Circle, last night, to hear a speech from Hon. Martin M. Ray. 'The speech of Mr. R. was a powerful and lengthly legal argument on the constitutional amendment, In its bearings on negro citizenship and suffrage. It was not such a speech as would “ take ’’ with a mixed audience, but will be found, on perusal, one of the soundest ami one of the most exhaustive arguments ever delivered in this State. A full report will bo found elsewhere, and we Invite an attentive perusal of it. “ BRICK” POMEROY. There was great anxiety In the crowd to hear Mr. Pomeroy, whose humorons and other sketches have given him a reputation coextensive with the limits of the Union. There were quite a number of radicals present, who seemed to expect in Mr. Pomeroy the light of a sort of ogre, with horns and hoofs, and brisj ties. On the contrary, he is a well dressed, gentlemanly, and rather good looking man. After Mr. Ray had concluded, “Brick” took the stand, and proceeded in an easy, conversational way, to present a few plain, homely truths to the audience, illustrating them as he went along in such a manner as must necessarily carry conviction. We shall attempt report of Mr. Pomeroy’s speech, only presuming that the radicals were sadly disappointed In its character. There waa no assassination, no treason, no secession^ no abuse, In It. It was nearly twelve o’clock when be got through, and the crowd were still, like Oliver Twi«t, calling for “ more.’’ Rl FFHNISMTt’ C0NNER8VILLE.

The anvil Chorus.—Since Governor Morton’s mean, little and Insolent refusal to admit the conservative portion of our citizens to equal right* In tho artillery of the State, the “ anvil chorus ” has become quite a popular piece of music at Ward meetings. Two anvils placed together, and the boles tilled with powder make a very respectable substitute for artillery. So hts Excellency will please make a note of the fact that, as he will neither sell nor lend one of his private cannon, the canvass will not go by default on that account Don’t you think you are awfully “ cute,” O. P.M.?
Amusements.—The‘Metropolitan Theater will open on Monday night, with the great play of the “ The Wife,” and an entirely new farce, “ The Post of Honor.” The company is one of the strongest that hat ever appeared in this city, and numbers several very talented artists. Mr. Riley hae spared no paint la refitting and preparing the Metropolitan for the coming season, and well deeame the patronage of our theater fetaf people. Bow office open at 10 o'clock M., to-day, whew seats can be reserved. firrnutnKLD’s Concxht,—The opening of the new mnslc rooms of Meeeers J. A. Butterfield A Co’s, at No. 22, Weat Washington street, last evening, was an undoubted success. We were presented with tickets, but on arriving after time were surprised to flnd tho rooms tilled to overflowing—not even standing room to be found. Prom the distinguished artists who participated, we have no doubt that the audience waa treated to some excellent music, and when we am furnished with particulars ’will be pleased to give a mom extended notice.
JaMH Bennet.—Tins notorious old bfeasnist waa arraigned before Mayor Caven yesterday morning, and this time remanded for Mai in Bartholomew county. The present prospect Is very fair for him to serve a second term In the penitentiary, a* Mrs. Tillman, of Lexington, Kentucky, was produced as a wltneas and testified to having known klmtvnilBM ho arrived in Kentucky, and that he waa married to Miss Merrill In her bouse) alee, that *o had nmn Miss Merrill shtce the date of Ms last marriage.
Senator Hendricks and General ‘ Manson made speeches at Connersvlllo on Thursday last. About 11 ft eon hundred persons were assembled. Mr. Hendricks spoke about two hours, and General Manson followed him. In the course of bis speech the General paid his respects to the Indianapolis correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazelle, who, in noticing speech made by the Gcnersl In this city, said that he “ spoke about as well as he fought at Richmond.” The General said this fellow Is one of the lazzaronl who hang about the State Houso for the purpose of picking up the crumbs that fall from his Excellency’s table— a fellow who had dubbed himself Colonel, and had never l>oen on a battle field unless he went there after the fighting was over, for the purpose of robldng the dead. At night Genaral Mason was serenaded and called out, when he made another href speech, In the course of which he was frequently Interrupted by a gang of rowdies, led by a deserter from the 3d Indiana Battery. Finally, Mr. Nathaniel Caldwell, an old citizen of Fayette county, told Kerr If he didn’t want to hear the speech to leave, when Kerr drew his revolver and fired four shots, the first of which passed through Caldwell’s hat, grazing the scalp. The second shot disabled his right hand, the third passed through bis thigh. Caldwell, who had one leg disabled in the explosion of the steamer St. John, in New York Bay, fell to the ground when he wae shot in the thigh, and while lying prostrate on the ground, Kerr shot him again through the calf of the leg, and then ran away. The spirit of radicalism is bearing a plentiful crop of " fruit ” throughout the State, CholeBjC *8 a Sanitary Aobnt.—Strange as it may appeal 1 , cholera is an excellent sanitary agent, and wo have not the slightest doubt that thousands of persons who now live, and move, and have their being In these United States, owe their continued existence to the presence or prospective coming of the fell Adatle scourge. When cholera comes a general cleaning up takes place. Fertile causes of fevers and diseases are abated, and the general health improved. Consequently, in many places whore cholera Is an epidemic the mortality bills are oven smaller than thev have been in previous seasons, when there was no epidemic of any kind. Cholera also promotes temperance. It is a generally admitted fact that intemperate people are more liable to the attack, and less likely to recover, than those who “ touch not, taste not, handle not,” or only use in moderation. Hence, with cholera comes curtailment of cocktails, and consequent exemption from delirium tremens, whisky consumption, and other diseases having their origin in the liquids that at last bite like serpents and sting like adder*. Although It is possible that many persons have been brought to an untimely grave through fright, it Is equally probable that many have been saved by fright. Editor or Herald: In your issue of Wednesday last, I noticed my name mentioned In connection with a joint discussion with Mr Vandergrlft in the Fifth Ward, and an Invitation to speak again from the same stand. I had jao reason to suppose that the few remarks made by me on that occasion would he dignified Into * speech, nor the reply of Mr Vandegrift magnified into a joint discussion, at a meeting composed almost exclusively of the new “National Union Party,” formerly called the Democratic party; but having receive* 1 so cordial a greeting from them, many being personal friends, I can not do less In return for the compliment, than to accept the Invitation, and will cheerfully divide the time of tho meeting, with any one, and If It be their pleasure, decide by chance who shall open and close the discussion

Butterfield’* « Musical Recreation.” A very large party of our musical dUUlanti assembled at Butterfield’s now rooms last night, for the purpose of indulging In a musical “recreation J’ The house was crowded to He utmost capacity with gentlemen and ladles who have music tn their souls, and the street outside was almost completely blocked up; so much so, in fact, as to Interfere with the street ear*. On the whole, it was a gratifying sucecs*. The crowded state of our columns precludes any extended notice of the perftir nance or performers, but we can not forliear tbe disposition to notice the instrumental performance of Miss Howard, and tbe singing of Mr. Goldsberry. The latter sang ” Hocked In tbf Cradle of the Deep,” and “Linger not, Darling.” with remarkable effect, evincing tbe po-scsslon of musical genius of a high order, Butterfield was also conspicuous in an instrumental trio. We are sure that the “ recreation ” waa appreciated by the guests as an uncommon treat, and hope that Mr. B, will give ns frequent rtpirtltlons. Words of Vital Interest. Will the thousands who read column* ot frivolous verbiage every day devote five —to tbe perusal ot a few feck which concern them nearly? Our text is Health, and we will pnt our commentary into a nutshell. Weakness is indirectly the cause of oil sickness; for if nature be strong enough to resist the morbid tefinencea which produce Illness, of course they ore powerless. Seek strength, therefore. Invigorate and regulate the system. When the quicksilver ranges from fiDtotedegrees in the shade, the most athletic are enfeebled, and the week axe prostrated. It is at such a time that sueh an iuvigorator as HOSTBTTER’B STOMACH BITTERS it urgently needed. Whet are tbe effects of this rare Vegetable Tonic? Would that all who have known its benefits could condense their experience into this paragraph. They would tell the healthy to protect their health they must use this great safeguard against the debilitating influ. enees. They would exhort the weak to discard alt unmedicated and impure stimulant* and ding to this wholesome and unfailing tonic and alterative as the shipwrecked mariner would cling to a raft in a stormy sea. They would, of dyspeptic pangs relieved, of appetite restored, of shattered nerves rcstrung, of headache* cured, of disordered function, regulated, of hypychondria dissipated, of miasmatic diseases baffled, of fever and ague cured, of liver complaints arrested, of beat, privation and toil defied, of hope reanimated, and chi erfuluess restored. Such are the effects of HOSTETTEB’S BITTERS. augfiO deodkwlw MOTH MD FRECKLES. ness is creepeng upon you, and should be averted by a timely nae ofthe right remedy. Take Ayer’s Pills, and drive out the humors—purify the blood and let the fluids move on unobstructedly, in health. They stimulate the organs of the body into vigorous activity, purifv the svstem from the obstructions which make disease. This, If not relieved, will react upon iteelfandtlw surrounding organs producing general aggravation, suffering and derangement.
