On Soturdey we had the pleaeure of attend* Ing one of the largeet mass meetings we have witnessed, outside of Indianapolis, stoeeMO. At an early hour the people begmi to arrive at Danville from all parts of the county, by all modes of conveyance known to a» Inland country, and by ten o’clock In the morning thousands had assembled at the county Mr grounds, almut a mile from town. Here e-pro-cession was formed, consisting of Mg Mehory wagons, filled with young ladles, and hands of music, cneh carrying a tall young hickory, from which the stars and stripe* WeW unfurled; of form wagons, carriage* and bugglea, containing cttlxene with their MttUkce, and hundreds of men on horseback. This lengthy procession moved into town and around the public square, and then marched back again to the Mr groued*. As they filed through the streets cheer after cheer rent the air, and the demonstration was such as to convince the most skeptical that a spirit was abroad among the people tbrteeald Re* be subdued, and that it svaX of sueh » ehas ter os to command the risepeet of even flfeRiOat proscriptive of Danville radicals. By eleven o'clock the crowd had concentrated itself in the vicinity of the stand, and pub* I He speaking was commenced. Captain John M. Lord opened the dleeuaMo* by announcing himself as the candidate of the Dvmocrats and conservatives for Congress, and then proceeded to discuss the meacure* of tae radical Congress. He bod scarcely commenced Ids argument when he Wne iRltsrrupted by the arrival of aq Immense procession from Brown and Lincoln townships, beaded by a giant hickory wagon,4tt which was sea Hahn A Oresb's famous Indianapolis brace band, and followed by several other Mg wagons, and scores of farmers' vehicles and 1 Itorsemen. As the procession of hundreds of j live Democrats and conservatives fllsd into the inclosure a radical friend observed to us that there were many men in (hat crowd who had not been to Danville to a public meetlag for five years. When the newly arrived had become pert df the audience, the mass of the people mi have numbered not lose then five theueand. Captain Lord proceeded with Me addrses, speaking for more than an hour. While Aw cussing the tax and tariff question* he fOobeeoasion to say that, though X manufacturer of railroad iron, ho was utterly opposed fo a tori IT to protect ills or any other speeM interests, and had always been In favor of a tariff for revenue only. Hon. Thomas A. Hendrick*followed ia an eloquent appeal in behalf of the Union and reconciliation, contrasting tho radleal coniae of Congress with the conservative and patriotic course of President Johnson, olalmiag that an endorsement of the latter and condemnation of the former, by the people at the pells, would avert dangers that would lead to civil war, sectional and nelghliorbood strife. The freedmen’s bureau, civil rights hill, and tariff Mil, were dispassionately discussed and attentively listened to. Mr. Hendricks alluded to the feet that Jt had been charged in that county that the President bad vetoed the Mil equalising bounties, s > far from this being tho caee, the radicals had a two-thirds majority In both houses of Congress, and could, In two hours, pass any measure they chose. They had failed to pass aev just measure looking to the equalisation of bounties, and had only passed the so called “equalization ” act at the eleventh hour of the session, by tacking It on to an appropriation MIL Every Democrat and Jobneos Republican in both bouses had voted to so eqiwHse the bounties that the soldiers who bed net restaved three hundred dollavi Monty sbo ■Mtavonh amount snffldeRt te make up (bet suntt-Ao radicals, who controlled toelsglsl*tto», did act do this, ami in (he Benin, Peeasnde» M# Merman, both radicals, mi speeches against the measure. The President bad never vetoed sny equalisation bounty ML Upon the eoneluston of Mr. Hendrick's remarks, Hsn. Joseph E. Bis speech was attentively IMeneff to, and upon its cottetueton, resolutions were ottered and adopted indorsing (he action of the H*> ttonal Union Convention held 1 Philadelphia, and the Democratic State Convention beta on the 19th of Marsh, pledging a support to the Democratic State ticket, and to Captain John M. Lord for Congress, About four o’clock In the afternoon the meeting adjourned, when the proeeaaton was reformed and marched through Danville, i there the parttotpanta dispersed to their respective houses, satisfied that a good day’s work had hem done for the National Union cause la old Hendricks. Pursuant to ncall published in tbeHxnAto, the Democracy of the Fifth Ward held a grand old ward meeting on Satnrday evening. Bonfires were lighted early In the evening, and soon after about five hundred persons assembled around McKernan’s mill to bear the questions of the day discussed. Harry Vsndegrtft woe chosen praldent and opened the meeting In a suitable manner. Captain J. Mr Lord was Introduced, and proceeded In a gentlemanly manner to (ell the people What bo was for and what he wo# against—what measures of Congress be approved and what he condemned. He announced Mmsc’f opposed to the civil rights Mil—opposed to the freedmen’s bureau Mil a-id the pending constitutional amendment*. He was in fbvnr of taxing the government bonds, an was In favor of a tariff for revsnus. but not for protection. These sentiments were loudly applauded and, judging from Kntmday night’s manlfostat ition, Captain Ixird will get a large rote from the fifth ward In October. After he had concluded, D. J- Calllnan was oaHod upon and delivered himself of a soul stirring speech of three hours in length. Harry Vandegrlft closed tbs meeting with one of bis happiest hits, urging them to stand up to the work. The meeting adjourned With thrse'cheers tor J. M. they whine like puppies.
The outrage* of this set of scoundrel* did not stop here; emboldened by ttar first oneoeae, they, a fow evenings ago, etola and broke a hickory wagon which some Democrat* had made to convey thirty-six ladle* to the meeting which was tad at llardinabnrg on last
