Scandalous Affair—The Wife of a I’romiiient Citizen dopes with a Dry Coodn Clerk—The Injured Husband its .Pursuit of the Guilty Pai^. Sometliing less than a year ago George lli'invn, a youtig miiii with more money than leauty, liecitme smitten with the seductive charms of a female who Was acknowledged to be a beauty; oucof the most exquisitely lovely damsels ou the North side. Ifer name was Mary Turner, and her father, a poor but honman, pegged and patched boots and shoes in ii little shop of his own. The only capital of the cobbler’s daughter was her beauty, and with this she determined, to use a homely phrase, to “ feather her nest.” A few sweet smiles fairly captivated George Brown’s heart; he fell into the matrimonial trap a willing prey, and after a very short courtship, Mary Turner, the shoemaker’s daughter, became Mrs. Brown, the wife of a man of means. Brown loved his pretty wife, and she loved Brown’s greenbacks, his jewelry, and the wealth of costly presents he bestowed upon her, but as for Brown himself, to love a man with a hooked nose, a squint eye, and one leg shorter than the other, was unreasonable, out of the question, absolutely impossible. She didn’t care a lig for the flesh and blood part of

poor Brown.

But woman must love somebody; it is human nature to love and be loved, instead of her husband, the only object which made Mrs. Brown’s heart flutter was a young and foppish elerk in a Lake street dry goods establishment, named Smith—not John Smith, the immortal, nor Joe Smith, the father of poligamists, but simply William Smith, who measured tape and calico, and catered tothevaried tastes and desires of the fair and ugly ones who patronized the establishment in which he was employed. This young scapegrace did not resist, as ho should have done, the advances of anothtr 1 man’s wife. On the contrary, he wss at tirst pleased and afterwards smitten. An interchange of sentiment took place between the guilty twain. They met, not by chance nor In the usual way, but clandestinely. Surreptitious interviews resulted in a resolution to elope; to “fly on the xvings of love/ but to take passage on a sleeping car, and let the iron horse widen the space between them and the only obstacle to their happiness, Brown. The latter was taken down with rheumatism in his shortest leg about two weeks ago, and on Saturday morning had so far recovered that he took a short walk. On his return to the house, Mrs. Brown met him at the door with the information that his dear old mother was seriously ill; that a messenger had communicated the fact in bis absence, and that no time must be lost, if ne would once more witness a live mother in-this vale of tears Mrs. Brown urged him to go, but insisted that he should walk very slow, in order that his game leg might not be injured by over excitement. She kissed him as he left the cottage where he loved to dwell, and waited at the gate until ho had turned a corner. Then the time for action had arrived; she collected all the valuables in the house, the silver plate, the gold watch of her husband, and $1,400 in greenbacks, hurriedly packed them up, and Smith drove up with a carriage; the two entered it and turned their backs upon Chicago, in the direction of Calumet station. Here they procured tickets for Detroit, and there all trace of the illicit lovers ends. Brown found his mother engaged in the sensible but not polite a\’ocation or peeling potatoes. He concluded that some cruel friend had perpetrated a practical joke, and did not hurry back, remaining under the paternal roof till afternoon. Then he leisurely walked home, expecting to be greeted at the threshold by a loving kiss and an affection caress from the wife whoso extraordinary beauty 5vas his

boast and pride.

He was uot welcomed. The i<Jol of his heart was at the time far away, and it is extremely probable that she was hugging and kissing and caressing the dry goods clerk. As fast as his long and his short leg would carry him, he proceeded to the houses of all his friends, frantically searching for his lost, his loved, but his false Mary. But he found her not. Yesterday the husband, nearly crazed by the conduct of his wife, ascertained that they had taken the cars for Detroit, and the ten o’clock train of Friday night boro him, too, to tho

same destination.

He cares little for the money, tho watch, the jewelry, and the plate, for they can be replaced from his amnio means; but he is distracted at the loss of that other piece of furniture, whose cruel deceptions left him without a companion in his desolate home, and he is determined to And her and bring her back.

state Items. —There is a dry goods home in Evansville that have u hugable corsets.” What next? —The Madison dry dock company has another steamboat nearly ready to be launched. —Strawberries are abundant in the New Albany market, at from fifty to ninety cents per

gallon.

—The mechanics of New Albany propose to celebrate the approaching Fourth, in a proper

manner.

—The Greencastle Banner is in favor of Hon. T. H. Nelson as the Union candidate for Congress. —The theatre season ha* closed at Evanrville. The new Metropolitan has not bet n very successful. —There is a great demand for houses in New Albany, and the Ledger says two hundred families are in want of houses. —A body of a negro man was found one day last week in the Ohio, near Henderson. Ho was probably one of the ill fated Missouri. —We understand that the Madison marine railway and shipyard has changed bands, and goes Into operation again June 1, under very favorable auspices.—ifadison Courier, 'li'th. —The negro who shot the woman Alltreide, near Evansville, has not yet been arrested. The Courier says there is little hope of her recovery. —Joseph Taggart, esq., has been nominated by the Democracy of the district composed cf the counties of Monroe and Brown-for State

Senator.

—The spring session and exhibition of the Indiana Horticultural Society will commence at Terre Haute on Thursuay, 31st instant, and hold two days. —Macklay, who stole a horse from Henry Long, In Harrison county, and has, since his arrest, been in jail here, was this morning taken to Corydon. where he will be tried. To Newspapers in the State.—The editors of all the papers of the State are kindly requested to send copies of their publications to the Indiana Soldiers’ Home, Knightstown, for tho reading of the inmates. A Distressing Cask.—The police to-day arrested a girl who has been living in a cave in the woods north of the wty for some time past, and associating with the niost abandoned, 4 and sent her to Lcguusport, where she belongs, i The girl is a mere child, only about seventeen years old, and it is certainly* distressing to see one so young already so steeped in iniquity.— Lafayette Courier, iuth. Singular Divorce Cask.—A singular divorce case came oil' the present week in the Perry Circuit Court at Cauuclton. A young lady in Perry county was married, to all appearances, happily;! but ten days after the celebration of the nuptials, she filed a petition in the clerk’s office tor divorce, setting up as a plea that the individual she had married icat not a man. The evidence on the tiial wag sufficient to establish this fact, and the divorce was granted.—Afmiison Courier. Liberal Offers.—Chauneey Kose, esq., a well known and liberal hearted gentleman of Terre Haute, in addition to numerous other charitable donations, some time ago proposed to give $50,000 towards the erection of a tirst class female college, provided a similar amount should be subscribed by others, to be located at such point between Logansport and Evansville, as the subscribers should designate. We are pleased to be able to state that our esteemed fellow citizen, John Purdue, esq., has taken the matter in hand, and proposes to donate $50,000 toward the object, in addition to Mr. Hose’s generous offer, and the institution is to be located here. It is understood that .Mr. ; Hose stands willing to increase Ins gift to $70,- ! 000 if a corresponding increase >h.>uld be made I by others, and it is pretty certain that Mr. I Purdue yvill give $100,000 rather than that the i project should fail. These sums, in addition to what will l»o subscrib* d by other liberal hearted citizens, will ensure sufficient funds to erect 1 and endow an institution that -h ill be second 1 to none in the country. We have already heard of one gentleman who w ill give $30,00(1. and another $|(',000 toward it.—Lafayette i Journal, 'JJth. One hundred and fifty hand organists grind ; at New York, and have a perfect understand- j ing with each oilier as to their routes, which : are changed weekly, so that they never in- j fringe on each other’s *• beats.” Most of their j organs are rented to them for $2 to $3 a week , by a company, which has become rich in this way, and the grinders make $10 to $TJ a week. : During the winter, the monkeys are kept at houses in the Five Points devoted exclusively to their use, their owners paying ft I to ■si.oil a , week lor their board.

she deserted; but, if there should be a meeting between Brown and Smith, woe bo to the latter. He could undoubtedly outrun the crippled husband, hut lie could hardly dodge the leaden missive that Brown has in store for the seducer of his wife. There is a moral in this real life episode. A handsome woman does not usually place her affections on a homely, deformed man. and in all such unions it is well to keep a close scrutiny over their conduct, and, above all. to take good care that money and valuable* are not accessible without the husband’s knowledge. No Huitu. Elder T having occasion to preach In the town of Gilead, chose what he fancied tho appropriate text, ‘-Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?” lie tells the

result:

It happened that among my hearers was an old negro who had lived a great many years in the family ol the village doctor, and nothing coulei rile the old fellow so quick as the mere suggestion that the doctor didn’t know anything. Every time that I repeated the text I noticed the eld darkey manifested much emotion, which I attributed to the peculiar fervency of tho African temperament; hut wanning with the subject. I repeated tho text with unusual pathos. “ Is there no balm in Gilead, and is there no physician there? ” Old Pomp could stand it no longer; and springing to his feet, he said: “llon't know mitliu ’bout the balm, massu, but den 's Jes' good doctor here as dare Is lu tie world.” Honey Locust Seed.—This plant, properly cut hack, will make » good hedge. It is objected to it that is naturally a tree, and can not be cramped into a hedge plant. So is the Osage orange, and sol* tho tiawthorn. It is useless to look for a plant that will make a hedge of Itself. Even the beech may begrown us a bodge, if properly clipped. The seed of honey locust will often grow without preparation, hut as seed is bought at the stores it is safest to scald it la-fore sowing. It is best sown In nursery drills, when the soil is wwrm— about the time for planting corn. Constant occupation prevents temptation. Virtue and happiness arc mother and daughter. God gives every bird its food, but does not throw it in the nest. An able man shows his spirit bv gentle words and resolute action; be neither not nor humid. A man is never so apt to be crooked as when he is in a strait. Our real wants arc few. The stomach tires ot everything but bread and water. There is one good wife in the country; let every man think he hath her. A woman's tears soften a man’s heart; her flattery, his head.
