monetary Affairs mMew York. New York, May 28. The Pott'a money article suys that the loan market is moderately active at 6@7 per cent. The stock market is irregular. Governments are better, and railroad shares active, except Erie, which is the weakest on the list. The bank statement is less unfavorable than was anticipated. The sale of ^*10,000,000 of Government gold has caused an increase of the specie reserve of the banka to the extent of more than $6,000,000. The deposits have correspondingly declined nearly $8,500,000, while the legal tenders declined nearly $12,000,000, and the loans have Increased more than $2,-

000,000.

After the board New York Central was quoted at 06%; Erie, 76%; Michigan Southern. 79%; Cleveland and 1’ittsburg. 94%; Northwestern, 28%; Northwestern, preferred, 58%;

Fort Wayne, 98%.

At the one o’clock call the market was dull, and Erie was depressed to 65%@65%, which is 36c. lower than the last London quotationsv Later in the day, Erie sold at 63%; Western

Henkel, Chairman Central Committee. Brutal Murder in Bauuo Township.— From :» reliable source, we learn a few of the particulars of a horrible affair which occurred in Baugo township, of this county, on Thursday last. A Mr. Crull, wlio resides in that township, is the man accused, and the circumstances are about as follows: It seems that the wife of Mr. Crull was walking out in the vicinity of her house, drawing a couple of children in a cart, and was approaching the house, when she saw a man sitting near the road, apparently resting himself after traveling around that ueisrhborhood in search of work, fehc being a lady of rather a timid nature, and baring that her virtue might be assailed, shyed around as she passed where the man sat, and carelessly upset the cart and threw the children out. The man kindly spoke to her, and asked if he should assist her witli the children; whereupon Mrs. Crull started and ran back to the house, and informed her husband that tnman had attempted an outrage upon her. Her husband immediately pursued the stranger, and overtaking him. commenced beating him witli clubs, stones and his tists. lie then took him before a justice on the charge of attempting to commit a rape upon his wife. After a hearing of the case, he was immediately discharged, on the hearing of the woman’s own testimony. It seems, however, that the fiend of a husband was not yet satisfied, and he made threats that he would “ put him where he wouldn’t insult another woman.” After his discharge by the justice, on Thurs-day-evening, the man went off in the direction of the woods, and has not been seen since. On the next morning, Crull was seen coming out of the woods with his gun, and on being questioned as to what he had been doing, replied that he had “ shot a d—d dog down there.” But upon search being made, no dog was found; and the missing man’s hat having been found in that vicinity, suspicion was entertained that he had been foully dealt with. On Tuesday night. Sheriff Violett arrested the supposed murderer, and lodged him in our jail, where he will probably lie kept until some clue can be found to the missing man. Crull is represented as a man of rather bad character, and should he be found guilty of this deed, we hope that ho will meet his just deserts.—Goshen Democrat, 23d. Artificial Water Spout*. The Boston Commercial ol .May 19 has this

story:

We understand that the ship St. Joseph, recently arrived here from Liverpool, had a narrow escape on the passage. It seems, as the matter is reported to ns, that among the cargo was a box marked “ Sodi um,” which was placed on deck with instructions to the effect that if there was any trouble with it from getting wet or otherwise, to throw'it overboard. Soon after getting to sea, the captain took a dislike to this box, supposing it might be something of the nature of lime, and possibly might set the ship on lire. So he ordered a couple of old salts to pick it up carefully and throw it over the stern. Instantly on its striking the water a terrific explosion occurred, and an immense column of water was thrown up, tilling all hands who witnessed it with consternation and amazement. Captain Alexander is entitled to much praise for acting thus promptly with the terrible stufl'(probably nitro-glyccriiie,) for had a stray block from aloft, or a heavy sea struck the box, us it lay on deck, the ship might never afterward have been heard from. The Iurki’REsmble -Miss Dickinson. Miss Dickinson h is been delivering herself of a very caustic oration, upon the subject of President Johnson’s policy, in Philadelphia. She was as amiable as usual, pronouncing the President “ an enemy of his party, his country, and ids God.” She made fun of the Pres, ident’s grammar, and alluded ironically to the unsteadiness of baud in signing pardons, intimating that his nerves were disordered by had habits. She observed that the law ranked her with children, black men and idiots, but she could not be •• reduced to the level of a man capable of making ” the 22d of f ebruary speech. She thought that the negroes should have votes to protect themselves from Memphis riots, nr.d quoted the “ martyred Lincoln,” whom she once abused just us she now abuses President Johnson. It becomes daily more evident that Anna needs a husband. Her temper is soured by persistent celibacy. But for the unfortunate individual ivho should hazard the experiment with the gentle Anna, w’e might exclaim as Saxe makes one Bf his characters say of the Tartar who carried off a man’s wife, “ God pitv the Tartar, Said he.'” -rPittabunj Chronicle.

The New York Herald publishes an exceedingly laughable and cleverly-written burlesque of several columns, purporting to he a report of l mass meeting du Union Square, attended by at least ten thousand beasts, and designed to indorse the movement for the prevention of cruelty to animals. A Great Boar presides, ami speeches delivered by cart horses, omnibus horses, donkeys and so on, which are full of telling satire upon men and things. The animals kept the standard of their meeting quite up to that of average conventions of intelligent mortals.

The Commercially*' The effect of our monetary disturbances of the week is rapidly subsiding; this morning there is none of the pressure which characterized last week, but on the contrary lenders are seeking borrowers; large sums have been offered at 6 per cent, on Government collaterals, but the Government rates are 7 per cent, though w ith a very apparent tendency towards 6 per.cent. The disbursements of the sub-treasury during the week, in the redemption of certificates of indebtedness, are likely to put the market in an easier condition than fourteen days ago. Discounts are rather more active; the banks and private bankers have more disposition to take paper at present rates, which has the effect of reducing, for the moment, the supply on call. Prime names at 60 and 90 days are current at 6%@7 per cent., with rare exceptions at 7 per cent. Stocks are again buoyant, the condition of certain stocks being the chief elevator of the prevailing strength of prices at the morning board. The principle feature was the apparent culmination in a corner of the Cleveland and Pittsburg. There was an active demand for cash stocks, among which a speculative direction in Erie is said to lie numbered. The price closed at 94,%. Ib gular and strong predictions made .it touch par. The street is considerably mystified about the Erie. The prevailing idea is that a party is manipulating it for rise stock. It is, undoubtedly, very largely oversold. The price declined %— dosing at 67%. Nearly every stock on the last board is more or less under speculative manipulations, and in every ease is held for

higher figures.

Governments are active and firmer; throughout Government brokers have advanced quotations materially; old 5-20‘s and 7-30’s, and 5-20's of 1802 are % better, and 7-30’s %@%; 10-40’s rose %—closing at 92%. The gold market is weaker. There Is less demand for export. Speculators for a rise are disappointed at the large amount of 5-2o's and Erie returned by the City of Boston, the amount being apparently unimportant. Foreign exc hange opened quiet, with a moderate demand for sterling sight bills; merchants are at present very limited, buyers being apparently disposed to take the chances of lower premium on gold and easier market.

Junction Hailroad.—We arc Informed that there is now* a fair prospect of the Junction railroad l>eing finished to Kushville sometime during the present year. We understand that the company agree to complete the road to this place, by the first of January, 1867, provided $10,000 aitoitional donation lie made

An effort is

ros-

pect ol success in this direction is considered very good, judging from the amount already obtained. The donation is taken in the form of a promissory note, due when the first train of cars shall arrive in Kushville, said note to be void if the road is not completed by the first day of January, 1867. Thus it will be seen that persons subscribing to this land run no risk of being swindled out of their money, for if the road is not completed by the given time, their obligations become void. Kush county needs this road badly, to give us a direct outlet to the eastern markets, and wo trust it will be built at an early day. -Rushville Jack-

THE CHIEF CAUSES OF PESTILENCE DESTROVED. TVR. COURTABET’S DISINFECTING FLUIDS. SeU cured by Letters Patent in the United States and France. Prepared aolely by the New York Disinfecting Company, at their laboratory, Nos. 298, 3U0 and 302 Henry street. New York. Office, 43 Cedar street. This company organized on a permanent bails, with Dr. Conrtaret, the celebrated French Chemist, in charge of Its Laboratory, Is prepared to furnish its Disinfecting Fluids for sick rooms, nurseries, urinals, water closets, privies, cesspools, sewers, gutters, ships, railroads, hospitals, prisons, and public institutions of all kinds, slaughter honsea, offal and fat-boiling establishments; all kinds of manures, (immensely increasing the value of the latter to every farmer,) and wherever poisonous and offensive gaases exist. These agints are deodorizers, antiseptics, antiputresecuts, and disenfcclants in the scientific meaning of the words. They remove noxious gases and odors oy the chemical principles—leaving in their placeshealthlul air; they are destroyers, and not merely absorbents of poisonous gasses; not Injurious to utensils in which they are used. The attention of medical and scientific men is directed to these disenfectants. Attached are testimonials in favor of this great discovery, which, with hundreds of others can be seen at the

company’s office.
