COMMERCIAL. Monetary Affairs in New York. New York, May 2.1. The Post's money article says: The chief feature of importance on Wall street is the lirmness given to 5-20’s by the report of the rise in gold. The loreign houses who had imported them from Europe can not sell them here at a profit, and are, consequently, re-ex-porting them. The loan market is active at 7 percent., but at this rate borrowers can get all the accommodation they want. The stock market is dull, but firm, with a general improvement, both in (lovernments and the general list. After the board, New York Central was quoted at 93%; Erie, G7%; Reading, 110%; Michigan Southern, 78%; Pittsburg, SO; Northwestern, 27%; do. preferred. .17%:. Foreign exchange was quiet, bills at sixty days, on London, selling at 10S%@109%. I’ommereial paper sold at 109%c^l09%, and bankers’ do., at short sight, at 110%(2111. The Commercial's money article says: the market exhibits a slight improvement of tone, though there is still an unsettled feeling among the banks; the pressure for money is not so severe as yesterday, but it is fully up to the means of lenders'. The sub-treasurv received about four and one-half millions dollars from the hanks to-day, on account of gold sold; the payments have been chiefly made in currency; the rate on call loans is 7 percent.; discounts arc quiet, and the rates higher; the best paper is quoted at G%@7 per cent.; names which, a few days ago would pass at 7 per cent., are now quoted,at 10 per cent. The banks anticipate greater ease to-morrow, the payments for gold having been concluded, but there is no prospect of any immediate change in the rate on call loans. The pinch in money does pot materially interfere with stock operations, the brokers themselves having large deposits to fall back upon. The marketjwas this morning stronger at the board, prices beiijg higher throughout the list. Governments are very active and firmer; old 5-20’s are % better; ditto of 180.1 %, and 10-10’s*%. The assistant treasurer Is prepared to redeem any amount of compound interest notes at par and interest, from not only the banks, but any holders whatever. Gold remains very firm, principally under the purchases of the short. The market is heavily overstock. Several parties have failed to make good their contracts. The losses in short contracts are very heavy. The export of gold to-morrow is expected not to be below live millions. There is a very active movement In cotton goods, the market prices on some goods having advanced 20 per cent. Business at the bank at closing hours to-day was large, the exchange being over S3:2,0OO,OOO and the balances over $5,500,000. Exchange is quiet, and the rates for sixty days bills are less firm. Later.—Five-twenties have been bought up to-day quite freely for shipment to Europe, at the present prices of bonds and gold. Fivetwenties are equal to about GO cents in Lon-

don.

It is estimated that with a recovery in the tone of the London market, and a scarcity of bonds among dealers, the price will have advanced fourteen doys hence, sufficient to pay a profit upon this shipment. This movement tends to prevent gold from rising above $1 40.

Money, Stocks, Etc. New York, May 25.

The fair promises to be a decided success. —The Columbia City Post of tbe 24th instant says: We are informed that Mr. Thomas Blaine, who, our readers will remember, was assaulted by Palmer some weeks ago, is in a very critical condition. Our informant say* he is not expected to survive.” —The Richmond True llepublican, Julian’s “family organ.” says that General Grose’s appointment as Collector, has been confirmed by the Senate. It pays the general a high compliment, and is greatly rejoiced that so good a man has been selected to fill the position in tbe place of Mr. Harlan. There is method in that rejoicing.—JJelaxcare Press. (Republican ) A Probable Murder in Washington Countv.—We learn from Mr. George Godfrey that a serious difficulty occurred yesterday ner Twin creek Washington county, in which Robert Reeves shot, and it is said mortally wounded Joseph Hamilton. Two balls took effect upon Hamilton—one in the shoulder, Abe other in the chest, ranging up toward the heart. Bad whisky was the cause of the affray.—A r cie Albany Ledger, -■">///. Robbery.—We learn from Mr. Samuel Rishling that on Wednesday night, tho IGth instant, the safe of Mr. Moses Gordon, of FrancesviHe, was broken open, and $125 in money stolen. The thief or thieves, also carried off from Mr. Gordon’s store, clothing to the amount of two or tty'ee hundred dollars. Democratic County Convention.—Pursuant to a previous call, tbe Deniix-ratie central committee of Pulaski county melon Saturday last, when it was resolved to call a county convention, to be held at the court houso, in Winamac, on Saturday, June 23, 1866, to nominate a county ticket to be sup-

ported at the ensuing fall election.

Tho basis of representation is made upon the vote cast for General McClellan in 1864, allowing each township one delegate for every ten votes so cast, and one delegate for a frac-

tion of live and upwards.

By order of the Central Committee.

Canal Meeting.—A meeting was held yesterday, at the olfice of Chase & Wllataoh, In this city, of parties interested in the maintenance of the Wabash & Erie canal. Nearly 8190,000 of sleek has been taken, and as soon as that amount is reached the company will be organized, and the work of repairing east of Lafayette commenced. The people of Covington, Perrysville and Montezuma, however, seem entirely indifl'erent to the success of the enterprise, having as yet raised no money to aid it. So far as we could learn, there is a disposition on the part of those acting In the matter to let those who want the canal kept up below Lafayette help to do it, and if they rely upon the liberality and public spirit of the citizens of Lafayette and towns east to maintain tho canal below this point, they will very likelv find themselves left out in the cold. Those who want help must put their shoulders to the wheel.—Lafayette Journal, 24th. —The two following items wo clip from the

last issue of the Richmond Palladium:

Arrest of a Counterfeiter.—On Saturday last, Ed. Mintzer was arrested in Lynn, in Randolph county, for passing counterfeit money, and brought to this city and lodged in the calaboose, lie had a preliminary examination before Commissioner Payne, on Monday morning, and the evidence was such as to induce that officer to send Mintzer to Indianapolis for trial. He has been suspected of dealing in counterfeit money for some time, but he plaved his game so “ fine” that positive proof could not be produced until he undertook the

transaction which resulted in his arrest.

Another Arrest.—A man by tbe name of Smith was arrested near Lynn, on Saturday morning, having in his possession quite a pile of counterfeit greenbacks, wbieh he was endeavoring to “shove” on the unsuspecting and ignorant. He was sent to Indianapolis, anti stands an excellent chance for locating

permanently at Jeffersonville.

DEMOCRATIC COUNTY CONVENTION.—The Democratic Central Committee of Whitley county do hereby notify the Democratic electors of Whitley county that there will be held in the court house, in Columbia City, on Saturday. June 2, 1866, a Democratic convention which will nominate candidates for county officers, to be voted for at tbe next October election, which are as follows: One county auditor, one county treasurer, one sheriff, one county commissioner (First District.) The committee recommend that the Democracy of the several townships do meet in their respective townships on Thursday evening, May 31. and select ten delegates for each township, except Etna, five, to attend the county

convention on the 24 of June.

The convention will have to appoint eight delegates to the congressional convention, to be held at Ligonter on the 14th of June next, to nominate a candidate for Congress and prosecuting attorney for this judicial district; also to attend to such other business as may

come before the convention.

By order of Democratic Central Committee.

S. H. Wunderlich, Chairman.

The Gibson County Murder.—The Evansville Journal gives the following additional particulars of the murder in Gibson county, which we made mention of a few days since: “ We made mention of the murder of a man which occurred in Gibson county, a few days since. At the time we were unable to learn the names of tbe parties, or the facts in tbe case. The murdered man was named Baldwin, and the murderer, Wade. A family feud had existed a long time, and was the cause of the trouble. The murder was committed at a school house in what is called the Barrens in that county. It appears that Baldwin had gone to the school house, at which a singing school was being held, armed vyith a club. Wade was a member of the school and was expected there. Baldwin seated himself in the aisle, extending his feet across it, but removed them for persons to pass, till a little brother of Wade’s came along, when he refused to let him pass, and treated him roughly. The older brother hearing of it, at once sought Baldwin and told him if he wished to abuse any one he should take somebody of hll size, or words to that effect. Some farther words passed, after which they left the house, and Baldwin at once began assaulting Wade, whereupon he was shot and killed instantly. This is substantially the statement as we have

received it
