Monetary Affaire in flew York.

New York, May 22.

The CotnmtrciaVa money article says the news of the panic in London has produced a Sympathetic effect upon the market here, though as yet to no great extent. Large packages of gold from the sub-treasury for shipment, by the withdrawing suddenly of a large amount of currency from nanks, has produced a marked derangement in the loan market, which is attended with a certain feeling of excessive uncertainty. This morning there has been a very extensive change of hands. Early in the morning, parties whose loans have been called in were lounging round the street and freely offering 5 per cent., at which rate they mostly found accomodations, but thus far there has been no realizing upon collaterals. About one o’clock money was offered somewhat Ireely at seven per cent., and indications appear to be that the market will close easier than it opened. Assistant Treasurer Vau Dyke has signified his willingness to name to the bunks requirements of ten days notice upon temporary deposites, but as yet none of the banks have felt it neceesary to fall back upon the sub-treas-ury; they naturally prefer a condition of supply which will give them 6@7 per cent, rate of discount, and will only withdraw the funds from the sub-treasury under a sharp pressure.

attempt will be made to run up premium to an extreme rate. Government still stands ready with thirty-five or forty thousand dollars available com to chock the attempt. The Government stock market suffers in sympathy with the disturbance of loans. At the board the prices were off per cent., but showed a slight recovery afterwards. The shorts availed themselves feebly of the fall for covering their contracts, especially for Erie, Illinois Central, Michigan Southern and Cleveland and Pittsburg. Governments are decidedly weak under the expectation of further returns of 5-20’s. Five-twenties are 1 lower; issue oflSG2, %; MO’S,)£; 7-30’s, certificates of indebtedness are selling at !)97£@100. The gold market is placed onee more under the control of speculation by the retiring of : the Government broker from the room. The | $10,000,000 bought yesterday from the SubTreasury will probably supply the requirements for exports for some time to come. ' This morning the prices opened at 130% and steadily rose 134; after which they receded to 132X. The shipment of specie to-morrow is likely to lie fully equal to that of last Wednesday. Private advices by the Cuba indicate that the amount of 5-20’s returned by that steamer will be large. Foreign exchange is unsettled, merchants buying to a very limited extent, and the principal remittances appear to been bankers’own account, and sight bills drawn against gold. The Dost says after the Government broker returned to-day, gold went up to $1 34VJ, but subsequently receded to $1 and then went up to $1 33%. At the the three o’clock board to-day the j following were the prices of stocks: Mariposa, 2( Western Union Telegraph, 60%; Central, 02%; Reading, 107%. Erie, 71%; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 81%; Michigau ! Southern 78%; Cleveland and Toledo, 104%; j Rock Island. 91%; extra dividend, 104%; Northwestern, 27%; preferred, 56%; Fort Wayne. 95%. He waived an examination, and was put under $1,000 bonds. Ross is badly wounded in the fare and neck, but not dangerously. Ross is a quiet, industrious man, and tlure m ems to have been no apparent causo for the attack.—Lafayette Journal. Democratic Mass Convention.—The Democracy of Fountain county will meet in mass convention at Covington, Indiana, Saturday, August 11,1806, for the purpose of electing a ticket to present to the voters at the October electiou. A general attendance of the Democracy is requested, as arrangements will be made to make this the largest meeting of the kind ever held in Western Indiana. Alt the necessary means to get good speakers in attendance have already been made, ard the Central Committee can confidently say to the people that they will not be disappointed. George Ridge, Chairman Central Committee. The Indianapolis, Crawfoedsville and Danville Raileoad.—Colonel S.C. Willson, President of the Illinois Central and Danville railroad, and Major Elston, one of the directors, returned homo from Cincinnati ou last Thursday night. They obtained from Mr. II. C. Lord, President of the Indianapolis and Cincinnati railroad, an assignment of all the donations heretofore made and the right of way, which are now in possession of the new company. The rapid and successful manner in which Colonel Willson and the Board of Directors have pushed this great enterprise since the formation of tlie new organization, gives assurance, that before many days work will again be resumed along the entire line.— Crawfordsoille liuvieoo. Letter From Hancock Countt.—The central committee of Hancock county have fixed upon Saturday, June 23, for holding their Democratic nominating convention. The Democracy of the respective townships will hold their primary meetings on that day and report at Greenfield, Juno 30th. Hancock went Democratic at the April election by a majority of two hundred and fifty, and at the October election she will increase her majority. For four years the people of Hancock have bowed their necks beneath the yoke of despotism, and have been so intimidated by tho threatening attitude of the par excellence •‘loyal,” amalgamating, misceginting, negro shrieking dieloyaliete, as to be afraid to go to the polls. But now, under the wise and patriotic policy of President Johnson, they can again stand upright and defiant, and will be heard this fall. No more Massachusetts soldiers, pets of Morton &. Co., are now quartered at Indianapolis to run out on election day to Hancock, to vote as they did for Governor Morton. Destructive Fire.—Our town was the scene on last Sunday morning, of one of the most destructive conflagrations, which has ever occurred in our midst; involving a total loss of about $10,0oo. The tire commenced in the clothing store of Captain $. Jerger, about three o’clock a. m., and in an hour the whole Northeast part of the Public Square was a mass of nuns, destroying five of our business houses. The origin of the fire is unknown. Our citizens were on the ground as soon as could be expected at that time in the morning, and a portion of them worked manfully to save property and stop the progress of the flames, but, to their shame lie it said, another portion stood by with their hands in their pockets, gazing with idle cariosity, seemingly not caring if the whole town was burned up. The fire company was promptly ou hand, and did good service in saving buildings across the streets from taking fire. If there had been a large cistern on the square, as there ought to be, probably more property might have been

saved.

A perfect hurricane was blowing at the time, and burning shingles were carried a great distance. Providentially, it seemed, when tlie fire was at its height, a shower of rain fell, and thus prevented the failing fire brands from kindling all the houses in the south part of town, and making a really terrible conflagration. The loss falls most heavily on Captain Jerger, who deserves, as he receives, tho heartfelt sympathy of all our citizens. He lost almost the labor of his life time, and barely escaped with his own lite, not having time, when awakened by his faithful dog, with the flames hissing around him, to even put on his clothes. And what makes it particularly hard in his ease, the loss of a leg in the service of his country renders him unable .to go to work and retrieve his losses. His loss was about $1,700 in money, and between $5,000 and $6,000 in stock and buildings. The next heaviest loss is probably Joseph Seinershiem, who owned the two story frame house in which Mr. Jutt had his coffee bouse. His loss is probably $1,000; G. J. Jutt loses $500 or $600; Paul Goeppner probably $800 or $1,000, both drinking saloons; II. Berk, shoe merchant, loses some $700 or $800. Mr. Beck is insured for $500 in the Indiana Central, and Goeppner has also an insurance in the same company, which will.partially cover hla loss. The others wers not insured.—Jasper, DuMe, Courier.
