—A citizen of Calumet gives us a vivid account of the finding of a human nkelcton in the woods about six miles west of Calumet, a few days since, and the way it is accounted for. About six years ago a Mr. Ripp lived on the place, and had in his employ a young and handsome German, who as Zipp believed, had become enamored of his, Zipp’s wife. The neighbors remember the bitter family quarrel that ensued, and the sudden disappearance at last of the young man. Zipp was always restless and melancholy, and some three years since succeeded in selling his farm, and moved to Michigan City, following the business of butchering, but during the last winter he became so completely melancholic and deranged, that he Iiung himself and was found sus-

pended, dead, in his bam.

There were pieces of the blue coat left having on steel buttons, left with the skeleton, the same worn by the young man seven years since, but his boots, singularly enough, were no where to be found. It is supposed he was covered with brush and leaves, which had decayed and left his bones exposed. The north part of this and Lake county has seen many a tragedy equal to any told of the mountainous country of Italy.—Valparaiso liepublic llth. Democratic Congressional Convention.—The undersigned, after consultation with, and in behalf of the Democratic central committee of the Tenth congressional district, hereby give notice that the Democratic congressional. convention of the Tenth congressional district, will be held at Ligonier, Noble county, Indiana, on Thursday, June 14, A. D. 1866, for the purpose of nominatlong a Democratic candidate for Representative in Congress. The basis of representation in said convention will be as follows: One delegate for each iao votes east at the late Presidential election, and one for each 75 votes or over. Counties. No. of Votes. Delegates. Allen 4,932 33 DeKalb 1,472 10 Elkhart. 2,000 .13 Kosciusko .1,898 12 Lagrange 796 .5 Noble ,1,550 10 Steuben 610. 4 Whitley 1,138 7 With the concurrence of Adams and Wells counties, which will be entitled to a similar representation, a nomination will be made at the same time and place for a candidate for prosecuting attorney, for the Tenth judicial

circuit.

Immediate action in calling eounty conventions for appointing delegates is earnestly requested. James McConnel, Chairman Congressional Central Committee. The Wabash and Erie Canal.—Messrs. Edgerton, Radius and Walbridge, the gentlemen who have been visiting the Hfeuis along the Wabash and Erie canal, for ofaseertaining what cony Tie lytf^owaWptftting the canal in goerfT order, nave not, we arc informed, niek-With the success they weje led to anticipirt^r At Delphi and Logansport, but litthj-riTterest seems to be manifested in the Sbeccss of the project, and the merchants and business men of those places, particularly of the former, seem to lie almost perfectly inditferent on the subject. By the Delphi Jour-. mil we learn that but £2,090 was subscribed, and even that sum was by the two paper manufacturing firms there, Messrs. Khinehart «fc Robinson, and Grifiith & Dewey. At other points along the line of the canal nortli—Fort Wayne, Huntington, Wabash, Lagro and others—the committee were more successful, and succeeded in awakening the people to the importance of the work, and secured considerable subscriptions. At points south of Lafayette the people seem perfectly iiidill'erent whether the canal is kept up or not, and little or nothing lias thus far been accomplished. Notwithstanding the want of interest manifested, it is thought funds enough will lie secured to put the canal in working order from here north, but unless interested parties on the south end bestir themselves promptly and speedily they will forever lose the opportunity of reclaiming this, to them, almost indispensable improvement, if they are satisfied, the merchants and business men of Lafayette amt points north can afford to be.

He informed his family that he had been called unexpectedly to Galveston, Texas. This, of course, was a (lodge, and an investiga- | tion was at once instituted, disclosing the I fraud. Circumstances betrayed his real desti- ! nation westward, and he was eventually j traoed to Lafayette, where it was ascertained I lie had purchased a Jasper county farm of the ! real estate agency of Frank Hine, and for | which he paid $1,200 down. It was aseertamI ed that he had $3,300 on deposit in the First National Bank of Lafayette. Mr. Tiekett came on immediately, and ibis amount was garnisheed,. The victimized broker, accompanied by Sheriff Colgrovc and Detective Bedford, took the night train for Jasper county, and finding the salt borer at home, took biin out of the dampness. We understand he spent a very sleepless night a few evenings since, on account of the numerous petitions which poured in upon “His Excellency” for appointment for the judgeship made vacant by the death of our old Irb-nd Judge Clements. We hope the Governor will survive the shock, although it is cruel in our “patriotic” friends to annoy the “grand mogul" when lie is stilfering as he is—ami has been for some time.- - Fi'u-
