COMMERCIAL. .lionetary Affairs In New York. • New York, May 18. Stocks opened deeidedly firmer throughout the list. C'liqueK are at work actively onCumherlaud coal. Western Union Telegraph, Krie, Reading, Cleveland and Pittshurgh, New York Central and Quicksilver. The tone of the market is firmer than for some time, and from the present aspect,of affairs, a speculative adadvanco appears’ probable. Nearly every leading stock is more or less under the influence of combinations operating for a raise, and shorts have a littb- eliaegc of escaping corners. Government stocks show a rather tinner tone. Tlie decline in 5-20’s is bringing out buyers, and tbe market resists with remarkable firmness the return of a large amount of bonds from Europe. Gold is active but without important change in the premium. The sab> of the sub-treasury have the effect of cheeking tbe upward tendency, it being understood that the assistant treasurer is a standing seller at ^1 HO and commission. Tbe shipment of specie to-morrow will lie large, probably not below jei.ilbo.ooo. The steamer Manhattan, from Vera Cruz, brink's $225,452 in specie. Gold is loaned at 7 per cent, per annum. Foreign exchange very lirirt at a fraction over specie shipping rate Produce bills very scarce. Cotton bills are unsalable. The demand for money from brokers is more active but the supply is superabundant and the rate continues at 5 per cent, without exception; 1 per cent on round sums. Paper is in demand and prime names are taken readily at 5@5>j. The speculative spirit is spreading to petroleum and mining board. Gold stocks are more active. Atlantic and Pacific railroad stocks have siiUdenly advanced to $5, with few sellers, the price having been offered for some time past at 250(5/475. Mr. Charles Graham, whose misfortunes growing out of the Ketchum atlair excluded him lor a time from the stock board, has been restored to membership by unanimous vote, and has resumed business. Lard—Less firm; sales at 22@22%c. Nouthcrn Crops. We have made careful inquiry of planters, who own plantations on the Mississippi river, with regard to the damage on the river, below this point, by the flood. They generally concurin estimating the overflow to have reached about one-third of the lands. On the lower Mississippi the accounts are that the whole country is inundated from the crevasses. A tornado which has recently swept over Southern Louisiana has committed terrible ravages on the plantations. Planters in our vicinity report that tho rainy season has set them very much behind, by reason of the grass getting a start of them. These casualties will certainly diminish the cotton crop considerably, and we should not be surprised to witness serious apprehensions of a much shorter crop than baa generally been anticipated.
