J^llon. Joseph E. McDonald will address the Young Men's Democratic Club, at Military Hall, to-night. JlSr Don’t forget the speech of Hon. Joseph E. McDonald, before the Yeung Men’s Demo, ertic Club, at Military Hall, to-night. ^ ♦ ^s — BSy* Major Bailey, formerly a paymaster o( this city, will shortly assume the duties of paymaster of the Pacific railroad, at St. Louis. Assault and Battery.—William Dill was yesterday lined $5 and costs, in the police court, for an assault and battery on Andrew Hoffmeieter. t3T We learn that Millard Fillmore, a son of General Nathan Kimball, died at Loogootee, Martin county, on the 24th instant, of spotted fever. U3TA boy who attempted to steal a hat . from McIvePs store was soundly booted by the irate proprietor, who preferred that mode to having him arrested. iST Captain Valentine Jacobs was yesterday lined and eosted In tho sum of $4 95, before Ewpiiro Sullivan, foFcowhiding counsellor Tom. Harding. Cheap as dirt. —^ Temperance.—Rev. A. S. Kinnan will address the regular weekly temperance meeting, at Masonic Hall, to-morrow, at four o’clock p. M. Mr. K. is an alle speaker. Jgir It is rumored that the Indianapolis and Cincinnati Railway Company have purchased the Lafayette road—which may, probably, explaiu the suspension of work on the Danville extension. Throat and Lungs.—On our inside editorial page of our to-day’s issue will be found Dr. Hale's third letter, treating upon bronchitis. It will also be published In our weekly edition of May 4. ^ — Particular Notice.—The connection of Mr. K. M. B. Hooker with this office has been dissolved, and consequently Mr. Hooker is no longer authorized to transact busiuess of any kindTor tin* Herald. L-iT The Democrats and Johnson Republicans of the Fifth District will hold a convention at Cambridge City on the 17th of May. It is rumored that Judge Kilgore will be a candidate against Julian. ' .UT’Those who tread the giddy mazes of the waltz, trip the light fantastic toe, chase theglowing hours, etc., will remember the May ballot' the Western Base Ball Club, at Washington Hail, next Wednesday. IEaTTIio regular meeting of I. T. F. No. 1 will lie hr id at their hall to-night. All members are requested to be present. Wm. BodenYiamer, President. W. A. Mussek, Recording Secretary. Public Speaking.—Hon. Joseph E. McDonald will deliver one of his stiring and eloquent addresses before the Young Men’s Demoeratic Club, at Military Hall, to-night. Turn out, Democrats, and Lave your spiritual strength renewed. Washington Division ok Sons of Temperance.—An adjourned meeting will tie held at Temperance Hall, this evening. Every member is most earnestly called on to bo present. W. E. Rabb, W. P. SST Will friend Greene, of the Vincennes Sun do us the favor to look into the affairs of the postofliec at that place. While the Herald is promptly delivered above and below Vincennes, in that city subscribers fail to get their papers for three or four days after they are due. Going to Europe.—There seems to be an epidemic sort of travel to Europe this year. Yesterday Mr. John W. Coons, notafry public at the county clerk's office, received the passports for Dr. Emil Klein and Christian Frederic Klein. Application has also been made . for August Sommer. KIT The case of Mrs. Hurley, charged with drugging and robbing Mrs. Hanlyn, was being investigated at the mayor’s office yesterday, with a strong improbability of not getting through till to-day. The council chamber was crammed full of witnesses of the female speei*%, who were being examined singly. Government Salk.—There was an extensive sale ofhorses, barneet and other Government property at the Old Fafr Ground yesterday. Hunt is a model auctioneer; while he squeezes the last dollar that can be obtained out of a crowd, he does it In an expeditious 1 manner. The horses were a line lot, and sold well—the highest bringing <195. 23T A new express company, called the Merchants’ Union, has been organized with a capital of fifteen millions. The amount apportioned to Indianapolis was one hundred and twenty-live thousand dollars, which was taken in three days, some of our business men taking a hundred shares of flOOeach. On applications $96,000 additional was apportkmed to Indian„apolis. K5* We would suggest to the State Librarian that, as there will be no more partisan barrangues, under the pretense of soldiers’ receptions, tlie unsightly structure on the east side of the State Honse, used as a stand, be dispensed with, or rented out to some enterprising merchant of small means for a pea nut stand. Itts neither ornamental nor uaeful in its present shape. tST They bit freely yesterday, and the banks of the river and canal were lined with young gentlemen, principally of African extraction, dropping a lino for the purpose of letting the shiners know that they were well. We had no idea there were so many young Africans in the city, but presume we saw them all, for a nigger takes to fishing as naturally as a duck to water or a bee to clover. Robbed.—Mr. Charles Hendricks, who lives on ;Noble street, was garroted on North street, between Liberty and Noble, night before last, and robbed of his watch and a small amount of money. James Erwin and James Fitzpatrick have been arrested on sus- . picion of doiqg the deed. Erwin is one of the menwliowas implicated In the jail homicide last winter. He had 1h.cu out of jail but a few days when he was returned to bis old quarters. The Woman Beater.—Stephen H. Woodson, the fellow who so brutally beat and kicked Mrs. Mary McCarty, on Thursday afternoon, was yesterday taken before the Mayor and fined 525 and costs, in default of which he~ was sent to jail for thirty days. Woodson was also fined $5 and costs for whipping Mary Taylor, his step-daughter, a girl about twelve years old. The little, girl testified that her father always treated her well, when not in liquor, but lately had been seldom sober. Be- , fore leaving the court room on his way to jail, he took the pledge to drink no more. It is to he hoftod that he will keep it, In jail and out. . >Vkst Market Square—We wish we could induce the Council to do something with the west market, which has become an unsightly and stinking nuisance. Tim atniotura^.which is no longer used as a market house, and seems on the point of tumbling down, serves merely as a shelter for vagrant bows an4 hogs, while the adjacent territory is a perfect golgotha of dead cats and Jogs, beef bones, night soil, rotten vegetable* and a host of unsavory substances. The circumambient atmosphere is Inavlty laden with a greater variety of stinks than Cdoridge counted In the ancient city o4 Cologne. Wa suggest that the building be torn down or takefi care of In some efficient ragnlter.

contemplates t seallAely, before the weather gets warm. We do not know that the cholera will come this way, but 'do not care about having such a pressing invitation extendop,.*sthjd of laying bare the oozy bed of the can41 to the fierce rays of a July sun. New Bridge.—We are happy in being enabled to announce that the bridge on the Indianapolis and Brownsville plank road, over White river, is to be rebuilt. For some time, persona living on that side of the river desiring to visit Indianapolis, have been compelled, at a good deal of personal inconvenience, to seek the lower bridge, while the residents of Indiana avenue have been deprived of the advantages of the travel through that thoroughfare. The Plank Road Company have contracted to complete the bridge before the first of January, 1869.

Sraupc from Plymouth, Marshall county, contains the fbUowIng sad intelligence: “James C. Ylnnedge, an old and highly esteemed citizen of this county was instantly killed on last Wednesday by a stroke of lightning. He was in hla cellar at the time of the occurrence, immediately beneath the chimney, which rested upon tho floor above. Tbe lightning struck the chimney, and passed down through the houae, doing but slight mischief, to its unfortunate vietim who stood below. His death was instantaneous. Although his hat was rent from the top of the crown to the edge of the rim^hieiiody&cre no trace of tile dread destroyer. He leaves a wife and several grown up chi Wren to moon Ms sudden demise. He wee a man of large heart, and«Df a kind and aObctlonite nature. His memory will not soon perish from the remembrance of his many friends.” ^ ^ 13“ This morning, about fifteen minutes past four o’clock. Louis BlankeKIhip undertook to purloin his day’s fuel from the woodpile ef John Madden, on Weet New York street. Madden having different ideas in regard to the rights of property from those entertained by Blankenship, concluded to protect his own, which he did by firing a gun well loaded frith shot at the head of the wood apr>ro]>r1ator, n\& shot taking effect In tbe side of the head, considerably Injuring his visual organs, ami doing nntoM damage to bis personal appearance. Our Wrdtct is, served him right.— Gasttte of yetterday. Mr. Madden, probably, is not aware that he bos no more right to shoot a wood thief than the wood thief has to steal wood. We know of an instance In which a man shot and killed a melon thief, and was sent to the penitentiary. However, if Blanknahip gets well, he may turn honest in consequence of his discipline. t ■ * Fire.—About three o'clock yesterday afternoon the grain warehouse of Dr. T. B. Elliott, on the corner ef Alabama street akd the Indianapolis and Cincinnati railway, took fire in the roof and aoon burned to the-ground, notwithstanding the efforts of the fitw department. The origin of the fire is not known to a certainty, though it is supposed to have been caused by a spark from a locomotive. Tbe building belonged to the Indianapolis and Cincinnati nrilrmd, but had been rented to Dr. Elliott. It contained three thousand bushels of wheat, some flour and some corn. The loss in grain and fixtures Is probably ten thousand dollars, covered by insurance to that amount 1u the Liverpool and London. The Bellefontaine freight bouse, near by, caught in the roof, but, ffttunately, the lire was extinguished before it had established itself. A high wind sfts Mewing at the time, and it is a wonder that surrounding buildings were not involved. A freight train standing near the warehouse was in imminent danger, but a gallant poney rushed in and hauled it out of danger. The Postoffice.—The lollowing petition is being extensively circulated and signed in the city: “ To Hit Excellency, Andreic Johnson, Hiesident of the United States: “SIR: We, the undersigned, citizens of the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, would most respectfully petition your excellency for the removal of the present incumbent of tbe postoffice of this c\Xj, A.H. Conner, and for the appointment of O. B. Dailey. Our reasons for ao petitioning are numerous, of which some are as follows, viz: a great dissatisfaction prevails on account of the careless way our letters arc looked over; thereby, in a great many instances, depriving us of our letters, etc., when they have been in the office for some time. By removing those grievances, for you your petitioners will ever pray.” While we are aware that the petitioners have good grounds of complaint, and while we recognize the necessity of a change iu the administration of the affairs of tbe Indianapolis pdstoffice, we are not prepared, just yet, to indorse anybody as s proper person to succeed Mr. Connor. We believe that tbe powers that be at Washington will act in a proper manner, at the proper time, and that the people of Indianapolis have an able representative of their interests in the person of the Honorable Tkomlb A. Hendricks. The Great Pigeon shoot.—There was high old time, and rare old sport, at tbe pigeon match, abont two miles up tbe river, yesterday. The Governor Morton was loaded down to the guards with excursionists—some of whom carried double barreled shot guns, to •hoot the birds, and- -others double barreled bottles of Old Tom Cat and other detonating mixtureejo sheet themeelves ami their friends in the neck. The meet uniformly successful ■hooting was done by the latter. The followrag te the aeon: * fimt Match, double birds. Colonel Top McBaker shot a single handed match against time, and Wiled every 1>lrd he shot at except one, which was a dead one thrown from the trap by mistake. On account of some dissatisfaction, the match will be repeated next Tuesday. All CALVES.—We understand that, in the last invoice of goods received by a popular Washington street dry goods house, may be found several bulky packeipea of artificial calves. The only drawback to the introduction of the tilting hoop is thus done away with. Heretofore that article has been won^jHtkto a limited extent. Only those ladles to whom nature has been betmtffMltlHfee matter of calf dared to ifeitltie tnftiew, tfce meet spindle shanked of the sex, if any such' there be, can provide themselves with a pair of robust and symmetrical calves, for a small outlay. Judiciously selected, anil properly fitted, with the ttltlngest of beeps, she may sail up Washington street with the. proud consciousness that she is dressed - a la mode. In’ the course of time we »h*n probably have educated cutters and fitters among us, who will save the ladies the vexation ancftrouble of ddlng their own work. We do not Jknow that the enterprising importer Of the ^rst drove of calves cans to advertise them; just at present, but, as the ladies will all be anxious to know who has got them, we will state that they may befound on Washington street, between Meridian and Pennsyl-vania-ln just tbo pfce* wfcars; the. people would most natujally look for the latest fashions, and aft the novelties of the day—in short, not to put too fine a point on it, at tbe
