^ — -7 • ' • ” ' jpa* The cold raiiitt and winds of the pest few days have given vegetation and garden “ sass ” a hack set. JGFMVe notice that the filth and litter is being taken away from the state House yard, to give the grass a show. £3" There will he a meeting of the Marion County Soldiers’ Association at the court house, next Saturday night. A full attendanee i« expected. Public Speaking.—Honorable Joseph E. McDonald will address the Young Men’s Democratic Club, at Military Hall, ncx Saturday night, on the issues of the day. Hemp.—The Lafayette Courier has an able article on the cultivation of hemp, M'e should think Lingle would find that a delicate subject upon which to write a leader, if he ever looks ahead. fed?* Mrs. A. Thompson, proprietress of that popular and exceedingly well furnished news depot on Pennsylvania street, has placed us under additional obligation for Beadle's Monthly, and tho Book of Fun. Police Court.—The records of the police court didn't amount to any cotrtiderabTc sum yesterday, amounting to but four drunks. A. l.ong, Alexander TVoodsidc, John Fleming, and William Ketclium are tho unfortunates. Uather Unctious.—Tho Journal raises a faint cry of fraud in the Fifth Ward election. This is rather rich. Democratic frauds in a ward election, where all the election officers were Republicans. Where was the postmaster® Fishing.—The heavy rain has somewhat spoiled the fishing in White river, which, during. the latter part of last week, was excellent. A party at the Bluffs hooked some lo»ely bass, with a few fine salmon, some of the latter weighing as heavy as twenty pounds. tJZT .Stock Campbell, the sprightly local of the Wabash riaindealer, called on us one day last week. Stock is a gentleman, u soldier and a Democrat, and fs the man who was drowned once, and had tho pleasure of reading forty columns of obituary in different paper* with which he had been connected. ISIT The German organization opposed to fanatical temperance and Sunday laws had a tine demonstration at Union Hall last night. The meeting was largely attended; the speakers earnestly opposed bigotry in legislation and the individuals present manifested a determination to carry out their ideas at tho ballot-
box.
IST The Madison Courier thinks that, judging from the price of city orders, we had “ better contract for the lumber to fence in Indianapolis, as it appears to be about the poorest place in Indiana.” We can do better, neighbor—shake off the intense loyalty which lias been misgoverning the city, and make city orders worth their face. Grand Excuhmon*. — The Independent Men’s Association (German) are to have a railroad excursion to Cincinnati on the ICth of May, and will have a grand pic nie on the 17th. A committee is now in Cincinnati perfecting the necessary arrangements. The programme will be published hereafter, and it is expected that the fare for the round trip will not exceed f3 60. General Mank.—The Journal biography of General Mank, about which it professes to know so much, is sadly incomplete. A friend has furnished us with the following, which we supply: General Mank first went out In the Eleventh Indiana, as a substitute for a man who was sick, and served for three months in that regiment, with honor to himself and the regiment. He afterwards went Into the Thirty-second, and was promoted ns stated in the Journal. E3T To correct a misapprehension which seems to have obtained to a certain extent, with very little excuse, wo will state that the Captain Jacobs who had the little personal difficulty with Counsellor Harding is not Colonel Jacobs of the State House. While on this subject we will also state that Counsellor Harding, with whom Captain Jacobs had the little personal misunderstanding alluded to, is not Mr. Goorge C. Harding, city editor of this paper. ST We regret to learn that Hon. Harvey G. Hazelrigg, Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of the State of Indiana, is now lying seriously ill athis home in Boene county, and fears are entertained that his disease, which is of « pulmonary nature, will have a fatal termination. Mr. Hazelrigg is widely known as a worthy, estimable gentleman, and a shining light In Masonry. The announcement of his death would cast a gloom over the order throughout this and adjoining States. USf* The Evansville Journal tells of the following < * pleasant incident ” which happened on the boards of the theater in that city one night last week. Miss Annie Mayhew is a resident of this city: “APlkasant Incident.—On Saturday night while Miss Ada Webb and Miss Anna Mayhew were both on the stage at the same time, some person cast a boquet which fell midway between tiie two, and moved on till it was near Miss M. She did not pick It up, doubting whether it was intended for her. Miss Ada seeing her hesitation, at once stepped up, and picking up the flowers, placed them in the hands of Miss M. This little act of hers brought forth rounds of applause.” Public Schools and Bible Panorama.— Arrangements have been made for tho children of the public schools to visit the Panorama of the Bible,j .at Masonic Hall. The schools of Washington street will attend on Thursday afternoon, and tho schools north of Washington street will attend on Friday afternoon. The exhibition will commence promptly at four o’clock. Price of admission for the children only tcu cents each. Parents of the children wishing to attend will he charged twenty-five cents. Every child in the city should see this panorama before It is taken away, for it will impart lessons of instruction which can not be gained so well from any other source. The Metropolitan.—Miss Lottn continues to draw good houses. It scorns the people have taken a fancy tollm little “gal,” and will go, or “ bust.” If we were disposed to moralize, and weep over the grief wfiioh has overtaken the “ legitimate,” through the agency of this saucy, pert and pretty little minx’s extravaganzas, we should doit somewhat in this wise: Oh! Uotta, you have got a devilish “ taking" way! What a lot 0’ young spooniet you have got breaking their precious hearts for you, and not a compunction! You’re a female brick, you are, and “ nothing shorter.” Why don’t you go in for the “ legitimate” and “high art,” even if you starve? Why don’t you reform the stage—play Juliet, or Julia lu the “ Honeymoon,” instead of “Tartartne,” the banjo, and the d—1? But you won’t—we know you won’t; and there’s no use preaching. So, take your road until the houses grow thin, and then maybe you’ll come to us for advice. “ Lola Montez” and “ Ireland as:,it Was,” constituted the hill of fare last night. There’s not much to criticise in either. The “Dan O’Carolan’’ of Mr. Rivers was very fair, only he would occasionally forget tbe;brogue as he grew eloquent in denouncing the wickedness of the “ middle men,” or in enumerating the honest principles for which thatiuieould Irish genUeman was remarkable. Mr. White does not shine In Irish characters, but did very well as “Sagged Pat 1 ’—considering. To-night, we believ^, is the last of Lathi's engagement.' If possible, it would be to the interest of the management to effect a re-en-gagement, as the is not “ played ont” yet.

“ Mr. John Byrkett, the Union candidate for councilman from the Fifth Ward, of this city, was yestesday elected by a large majority. The Democrats brought out, as his opponent, Stephen McXabb, lute copperhead candidate lor sheriff of Marion county, and after counting noses, concluded that Mr. McNabb’s eloquent voice would resound in the Council chamber, hut it la likely that they£«ve a#cattained tho rftautt by Ms time. -The mere they struggle the worse* they are beaten. For.•good, honest, stndgfctforwnrd lying, that will do. Mr. McNabb’s majority was two hundred and seventy-four, hut that makes little difference to a newspaper correspondcat. Pugilistic.—There seems to he a good deal of fight in the atmosphere just now, and the disposition to redress private grievances by an appeal to the manly art, and to strike out from the shoulder on the slightest provoeution, is general. Within the past ten days scarcely a day has passed that has not been fruitful of assaults and batteries, bearing a fruitful crop of bunged eyes and smashed noses. The last affair is that of a business man, who had a quarrel with his partner, and dissolved the connection “by mutual consent,” of course, Whereupon the retiring partner wrote a letter to Crossland, McGuire & Co., telling them not to trust the remaining partner, as he was a “lame duck.” Ongoing down to M. k Co.’s to make some purchases, the gentleman was shown the letter from his late associate, whereupon his Indignation fairly bubbled over. He couldn’t contain himself, amt had to issue a supplement. Rushing out, brimful of wrath, he started on the mn to seek the snake in the grass, who had tried to stab him in the business man’s most tender place, his mercantile standing. He found the S. in the G. taking a quiet glass of lager in a saloon, and gave him a most merciless whaling. Served him
right.
An Emigrant Family.—A few days since a family arrived at the Union Depot quaintly dressed, the gray-haired sturdy sire, with feet encased in heavy boots, the tops of which extended to tho kneel, outside of a greasy wellworn pair of leather breeches, a world too wide, which covered the locomotive apparatus, a strong home-made jacket, white shirf, and a woolen scull cap, all useful and ornamental, completed his tout ensemble. The wife was dressed Jn home-made goods of a dark color, too scant in width for deceptive hoops, heavy

Crop* and Crop Prospect*.
Farmers are generally busy and progressing rapidly in sewing spring grass, many acres or winch have been sown during the' past teu days. The extreme cold of last winter, with the small fail of snow was thought at one time to have badly injured winter wheat: but wherever it bad a good start 111 the fall, it appear* to have sustained no serious damage. From what we have learned lb going through towns hereabout*, ‘ and from conversations with farmers, we think wheat has come ! through the winter better than usual, and un- I less other causes prevent, the crop will be!
alKiVe the average.
Fruits of all hinds appear to has * e*ca]>ed . damage. Peaches in all the orchard* we have . examined are setting for hlossoms, and tho 1 only danger appears to he that they will open 1 too soon. Tire cool weather wu have expert- i cured during the past two dayslsexactly what is needed to retard the buds. From present ! appearance* we may expect a larger peach crop than we have had before in many yisrrs. The ! general failure of the peaches and other fruit through the West this Tear, Will make the crop here more valuable than ever. Of course I if peaches are safe, it is hardly necessary to say wc may expect a full supply of apples and :
other fruits.—2,oc/i**Ur LittUm.

A Grand Excursion.—a pleasure trli>, on a magnificent scale, to New Orleans and hack, has been gotten up—elegant and commodious boats to leave Cincinnati and Louisville on the 17th of May, for the purpose of carrying the excursionists. We can imagine no more pleasant excursion than down th* great river at this season of the year. Always interesting,^any of the points along the Mississippi have become historical on account of the warlike aSsociaQons connected with them. In fact there is scarcely a place so insignificant that it has not its history of tire and blood. There Is Memphis, where the first grand river combat of the war occurred; Vicksburg, where the most obstinate and determined resistance of the war was made; Port Hudson, and numbers of other places which have rc-cchoed to the roar of artillery, and the screaming of shot and shell. But aside from historical associations, the trip will prove attractive to one who seeks to combine instruction with pleasure. In tho month of May the South is seen In all her glory of verdure and flower, while there U a glowing •ensuousness in air and sky to which our more northern clime is a stranger. The dark and sombre forests of cypress trees, from the branches of which depend the ghostly tufts of moss; the magnolia trees with their beautiful green enameled leaves and glorious white flowers; the cultivated cane fields, with ’the large, airy and quaint looking mansions embowered in groves of orange trees and flowering shrubs, together with tho droves of sable freedmen, naked to the waist, and “toiling lu the cotton and the cane,” all go to make up a picture, which, once seen, is not easily forgotten. Tickets for the round trip will be sold for fC5—much cheaper than regular rate*. A steamboat excursion is an entirely different thing from an excursion by railroad, and we advise all who have never been down the Mississippi, and can spare twenty days time, to go, by all means. It will pay a big per cent, on the Investment. The Parkersburg Times is responsible for the following: “All the well* at Burning Springs are yielding some two thousand barrels per day, as near as we can gather. The wells on White Oak are yielding, of heavy oil, one hundred and fifty-nine barrels a day. The Lick Run three hundred barrels, tbe Horseneck one hundred and fifty. There arc outside welts yielding from two hundred to three hundred barrels per day, besides the Hughes river region, of which we have very' little knowledge. The prodnet of oil ia this vicinity is about six thousand barrels per day, the most of It fine lubricating di tba* Will tun from forty to one hundred and twenty per gallon. This shows that the oil territory of West Virginia la the best yet discovered, and yet not one half the puffing has been applied to it there is in Pennsylvania. It is time we let our country be known through the press.

I Fatal Gone among Mulkb from Feeding on I f-COUNTRY Cohn.—A frightful | ; colic, it is said, has got among the mules on j the Mis-osipjit river, which slays its thou- 1 | sands. The Vicksburg J Jerald siMiak* of il as i being in that vicinity, and state* that It kifiesl two thousand in forty-eight hours. We have ! heard of this malady frequently since the ! close of the war, as prevailing in various parts of tho country. It is not confined to the “ bottom” farms by any means, but ia heard af every where 111 tho South where the people fail to make corn enough for their own use, and have to buy corn raised in the North. Our planters say they know not how it 1*, but it is certainly true, that very often the corn brought down the river, though apparently sound, produces a fatal colic among their mules, answering precisely to the description of the fearful disease announced by the Herald as prevailing in the neighborhood of Vicksburg on the Mississippi nver. One planter told us some weeks ago, that he had lost fourteen mules since he picked his crop,

It lias Iteen strongly intimated in radical circles that the Senate will soon take up and puss the House bill imposing unlimited and unqualified suffrage in the District of Columbia. The leaders of that party in the Senate are urging the matter, and are anxious to make the experiment in this city and district, where they can force such a detestable measure with negro bayonets. The President will, of course, veto any such bill, but they think
they can pass It over his head.
Lumbering in Wisconsin.—The loggers have mostly come out of the woods. The number of logs banked In the country this winter is about 160,000, which will make about 45,000,000 feet of lumber, showing a deficiency from last year of 40.000,000 feet. The Hhawano lake lumbermen have put in about 7,000,000 feet of logs.—^’/latcuno Journal, Tbe dispute as to confederation lit tho Province of Nova Scotia has developed a spirit not altogether favorable to Its future retention by the British crown. A New York poet has found a new rhyme for “bosom.” Her old bards were merely limited to “ blossom.” which wasn’t quite thething either. But the Gothamite sings of Attila, and tells us how slumber subdues him on somebody’s bosom, which is tolerable rbvme
