Ward, American Express messenger, has our thanks for late St. Louis pal»ers. IpT Captain Jacobs was yesterday bonded in the sum of $600 to keep the peace toward Thomas W. Harding. t3T Dnprey, the Lafayette eloper, was arrested at the Commercial Hotel Monday night, but was released again, and went his way, along with his deluded mistress. Ur “My Scrap Book ’’—that is to say John Sam’s scrap book, for May has been received. It is an improvement on the first number, and is for sale at nil the book stores and news stores. New Music.—We have received from the publisher, John Church, jun., of Cincinnati, two new pieces of musto entitled “ Guitarist’s Album” and “ Maiden's Blush.” For sale by > the publisher. Masonic Electic.—Mr. George Fleming, agent for Masonic emblems, etc., has furnished us with a copy of the Masonic Elsctic, a magazine which will commend itself to every brother of the mystic tie. Mg) » gli Mayok’s Court.—Andrew Jennison was lined for an assault and battery, and was sent to jail because he didn’t pay. Andrew McGee and William Miller were fined for intoxication. Cassn Manse paid $23 40 on account of tUtb. m [ ^ aST Wc are glad to learn that young Lilly MeDougal, who had suoh a fearful fall from a third story window at the residence #f Colonel . Palmer, last week, has so far recovered as to induce a good jiope for final and perfect recovery. ^ ^ ^ Appointments.—Isaac C. Price, ofSt. Joseph; Jasper M. Dressar, of Tippecanoe, and Joseph Trainer, of Lawrence, have been appointed notaries public. John Livingston, 12S Broadway, has been appointed commissioner of deeds for the Htateof Indiana. Panorama of the Bible.—This great work will be exhibited at Masonic Hall this afternoon for the benefit of children and ladies who tind it inconvenient to attend the night exhibitions. We advise all who have not seen it to attend this afternoon. Doors open at three o'clock. UjlT We have been shown a large map of * Marion county, published by C. O. Titus, which is the most accurate and complete thing of the kind we have yet seen. The map is prepared from actual and accurate surveys, and contains in addition a city map, with plats of the country villages, business directory, etc. Official.—A lieutenant from the rural districts was yesterday settling up his business at Major Reese’s office, when the latter told him be would have to sign certain papers officially before he could pay him. The lieutenant wrote his name on two parallel lines, following with the word “officially,” in bold, hut somewhat rugged chlrography. The major smiled audibly, and entered into a lucid explanation. * Burglary.—The office of Sinker’s tonudry was broken open Sunday nfght, and robbed of some trifling articles of little value. The burglars seem to have made frantic, but fruitless efforts to break open the safe, and rummaged around generally and promiscuously. A private watchman, temporarily employed during the sickness of the regular watchman, is supposed to have been chloroformed, or overcome with some other fluid, as he did not discover anything was “ going on.” The Pigeon Shooting.—There was a line attendance at the pigeon shooting match yesterday afternoon, though the sport was noth- ■ ing to brag of on account of the high wind which prevailed. The party enjoyed a fine trip up the river on the Governor Morton, and all seemed to enjoy themselves. On account of the unfavorable wind, the match was not completed, but was postponed UU next Friday afternoon. The following is • the score of twelve single birds each: Gorham 001011111001—7 Charles Warner 101010100011-6 Thomas Warner 000000000000—0

The Metropolitan.—There was a good hettse at the Metropolitan last night, to-wit-ness the “Female Detective,’’ followed by “ Family Jars.” “ The Female Detective ” presents many of the qualities which go to make up a popular play. It is improbable if .notImpossible, with a good deal of murder, ghost and promiscuous rascality in it “ Barry Malllson” is a diabolical scoundrel, and “ Florence Lanfcton ” is a young lady who goes about masquerading in impossible costumes, to find out things. She is, in fact, the female detective. Mrs. More, as “ Madame Bitzdof,” did some very good acting, and White was ressonably funny- The best thing that can be said about the “ Fetaale Detective ” is that It draws. * KF* We understand that it is not true that policeman Buser met with opposition on Monday evening, while attempting to arrest an Irishman for heating his wife. No event of that kind occurred, but, as stated to us, two green Irishmen, peddlers, had got into some altercation, and Buser attempted to arrest one of them for disturbing the peace. In doing to he beat one of the men severely over tbe head with his mace, when resistance was made, and Buser getting badly whipped, retired for aid. Alter being reinforced by several policemen, Buser returned to tbe scene of the eonfliet, but the green Irishmen had sense enough to get out qf the way. This is all of the affair, as represented to us, but which the poileemen endeavored to magnify into a very serious affray, commencing with the story of wife whipping when there wss no female in tbe case, and only two belligerents wbo appeared to Buser like a regiment of men. I tsr We had occasion to call at the operating rooms of Doctors Kirke A Smith, ocnlists and aurists, this morning, snd while th«e witnessed a very delicate operation on the eye. The patient was a young lady of this city who had a very bad squint or cross eye of the right eye, existing since infancy. The operation was made in a few seconds, and she left the chair with perfectly straight eyes, haviqg suffered but little pain. From the very sMaitiflc and successful manner la which the case was treated, we would recommend every man, woman and child, in this city, wbo is suffedng from this unsightly blemish, to avail themselves of the skill of tb<*u gentlemen, and have their eyes made straight. We learn that there la no intemiption to business from the operation. .See advertisement in another column. We hope tllrough the^exertions of Doctors K. & S. there will not be a single case of cross eye left to inar the beauty of the fair ones of our city. K3r Wc are happy in being able to state that the difficulty between Captain Jilts Sehenofsky and ourself has been amicably adjusted. The Captain withdraws the paragraph which wc construed to be personally offensive, and we withdraw the reply to It, of. fensive to the Captain. We deem it proper to state the affair originated in a misconception. The Captain wrote that he did not believe the first communication from a soldier of the Ninth regiment was written by an officer of r the regiment; whereas, we bad stated such to he the fast. The commuaisation in question was written by a “ non-commissioned officer,” and hence, in a military sense, the Captain was right, while In a civil, and editorial sense, we were right. In eonelnston, we will state that Captain Sehenofsky has proved himself a gallant soldier in active service, snd we believe him to be in honorable gentleman, who woqjd not, knowingly, misrepresent or falsify. The Captain loaves here In a fsw days, for Washington, where he will apply for a position la thi regular army. Being an educated soldier, and an efficient officer, we trust that 4 bis application may be successful, and that in the next war he may do efficient service.
