Flinn, the gambler who accidentally shot and killed young Halford, in this city, some nine months since, died recently in Memphis, Tennessee. Fire.—A small frame tenement, occupied by Mrs. Ann Turner, on Uay alley, in the northwestern part of the city, was destroyed by Are Saturday afternoon. ilSr John Burkett has been nominated by the Republicans of the Fifth Ward, to fill the vacancy of the Common Council caused by the resignation of Mr. Lefever. 13" The store of C. C. Williams, formerly owned by Airs. Thomas, which was closed by the sheriff, is again open, the matter having been satisfactorily arranged. S3T The cricket match which was to have come off tliis afternoon lias been postponed on account of the sickness of some of the players. It will probably take place in the latter part of the week. ^ TtJT* A terrible fight is reported to have occurred on Indiana avenue, between Illinois and Tennessee streets, Saturday night. Perhaps the Police Court may give further particulars to-day. JkJ?*Governor Morton Ins resumed his gubernatorial dulies. We ninlerstand that Governor Baker will retire to Kvausville, and that I'olniie! Holloway will relieve Colonel Jacobs of t!ie duties of private secretaryship. 13"The Governor Morton made two frantic trips up the river a> far as the Grapevine .Swing yesterday. JfJT The magnilieent two story l ' plug which we sport on Sundays and extra occasions is a product of Brown's establishment, tbo practical hatter of Kentucky avenue. It is universally admitted to be Brown’s chef iToeure, the most practical jauntiest hat ever seen in these parts. Horse Item.—For the past three or four days Hugh Delzell’s stable, on Maryland street, near the corner of I’etuisylvania, has been the center of attraction for amateur and professional horsists. A number of Southern buyers, who are collecting a drove of brood mares, have taken up their quarters with Hugh. They have already bought a large number of tine animals, for which they have paid good prices. ^ ^ ^ Assault.—A man, whose name we believe was Sayers, was slightly lined by Esquire Sullivan on Saturday, for an assault and battery on Councilman Joe Harris, the able and etlieient old elo’ renovator on South Illinois street. Mr Harris wanted to stop the prosecution. as the offender had called and apologized to Mrs. Harris for the assault on Mr. H., but the proceedings had gone too far to be stopped. Mr. Harris showed a commendable spirit of forgiveness in this, for which we honor him, and which we commend to those bloodthirsty and litigous wretches who are as Shylock in resenting an injury, even after it has been repented of and atoned for. Return of a Female Prodigal.—About eleven years since a young girl was induced to leave her parents in this city,and was taken to California under the protection of a married man, who formerly kept a hotel here. She has lived in California ever since with the family of the man who took her away, passing in society as his daughter. Last week she returned and overwhelmed her parents with joy at her restoration. Whatever may have been lier follies for the past eleven years, she is still the daughter, and they receive her with open arms. There is material for a rof mnnee in the slory which we have thus briefly sketched, tint our readers may work it out for the! Duel ve% Literary .societv.—A literary society, composed of ladies and gentlemen, married and single, with regular semi-monthly mecti ings, has been organized in this city, and is in « flourishing and healthy condition. The sock tyi* divided into four sections, who rotate the duty of providing the society entertains men ts for Hie regular meetings. The exercises consist of the reading of essays, poems, discus^ «ions, etc., diversified and relieved with music, 1 singing and gossip. Such associations, properly conducted, have a salutary influence, and we hope that others may follow in the wakei of tliis, the pioneer association. The next! regular meeting will lie at the house of Mr. James M.Ray, on Tuesday night. J^S*The Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Dan-, ville railroad has been surveyed ns far as < rawfordsville, Indiana, under the supervision of General T. A. Morris, chief engineer of the route. In spite of the difficulties that gencr ally attend the survey of a new route, the General, by his usual perseverance, has suci reeded in getting the line established as far as; Crawfordsville, and the as^-tnnt engineers. Captain George Nugcn , ':uid Mr. F. Lord, of Cincinnati, are busy with their respective corps setting slope stakes for the workmen to go on with the construction. This road, when completed, will open a fine trade to the Imsines* men of our city, as the line embraces some of tbe best counties in the State. Much credit is due to Mr. H. C. Lord, 1’resideut of the road, and to Colonel John II. Carter, Secretary of the same, for the facility |bQyfcave shown in the prosCiiitlbn of this
work.
Artificial.—There is scarcely any liound to the ingenuity of man. Thus far shalt thou go and no further was not written of the ’cute Yankee, whose inventive genius supplies tbe defects of nature and checkmates the ravages of time. We have artificial legs, arms, eyes, hair, teeth—in fact almost every part of the human frame except the brain. We believe no one has attempted to supply the entire deficiency of that organ, though brass and M tin ” frequently go a great way in making up for a scarcity of brains. Speaking of artificial skill reminds us of some beautiftil specimens of artificial teeth, manufactured by Dr. John Kilgore, No. 66 North Illinois street. Some of these specimen* are so exceedingly well counWrfeited as to deceive the very elect, and so jfcf* ach*. These teeth are mounieil on gold platee, or on rubber at ezceedluflyHcw rates. To all who are deficient In the matter of grind** we cordially recommend Dr. Kilgore as an accomplished workman and a gentleman,
evening last. The president and vice president being absent, on motion, Dr. James S. Athon was called to the ehair, .whothanked the Club for the honor done him, and proceeded to address the meeting in a few brief but able remarks, after which he introduced to the audience the Hon. S. H. Buskirk, of Monroe county, who was present to address the meeting upon the invitation of the Club. The subject of Mr. Buskirk’s remarks was the Restoration of the Union—the status of the States—which involved an exposition of the peculiar characteristics of our complex form of Government. With great ability the speaker elaborated these question^, and the common expression of the audience was, that seldom had a more instructive or valuable address been delivered before a popular assembly. In the course of his remarks, Mr. Buskirk dissected, with great abilily, the Freedmen’s Bureau bill, and the Civil Rights act, both of which had been vetoed by the Executive, sustaining the action of the President for his efforts in attempting to resist these infamous and unconstitutional measures. Mr, B. forcibly demonstrated that the passage of the latter bill over the President’s veto was clearly unconstitutional, which, on account of its forcible and novel reasoning, we will write out from our notes hereafter and publish. Dr. Barnes offered the following resolution: liestlved, That the Young Men’s Dsmocratic Club, and this “eeting, hereby tender their thanks toflon. 8. H. Buskirk for his able, logical and eloquent address of this evening. On motion, the meeting adjourned to meet again at Military Hall, 6tt next Saturday night, the 21st instant, where the constitution and by-laws of the Club will be read, and books open for those who desire to enroll their names
as members of the Club.
Frank Cunningham, Secretary. Indiana School Journal.—The April number of this periodical, published by John J. Parsons, and edited by Preftssor G. W. Hoss, has been lying on our table for several days, awaiting a notice. It contains a number of well written educational articles, according to the orthodox ideas of education. It is, perhaps, unfortunate, that professional educators so soon forget, and profit so little by the experiences of their pupil life. Aa it is, theory runs away with practice, and teachers are made either dull, plodding, treadmill followers of routine, or wild and visionary im
practicables.
