J3J - The soda at Wiles & Reynold*’ drug store, corner of Pennsylvania and Market streets, was excellent yesterday. We tried it. tgr The store of C. C. Williams, on Washington street, formerly owned by Mrs. Thomas, was yesterday closed by the sheriff. A trial of the rights of property will ensue. jy Mr. John C. Slawson, mall agent on the Indianapolis and Cincinnati railroad, is one of the bulllest fellows “ what is,” to bring late papers. We are “respectfully yours,” John C. H3P Captain Hicks yesterday received orders to wind up the institution known as the Soldiers’ Home, or Rkfn Barracks, and turn over all the appurtenances to the proper authorities. . O ✓. ! U Polick Court.—William Humphrey was yesterday fined and jailed on three separate » harges—drunkenness, disturbing the* ftelc* and profanity. Anna Johaaop and Bell R^d

I iT We are pained to record the death of Mr. Kdniund Clark, Junior Warden of An«ieut Landmarks Masonic Lodge of this city, Mr. Clark was an estimable citizen and a Mason of high standing. Ho will l>e buried by the Order at CartcrsbUrg thls nhcruoou. Not That Harris .—The counsel for .Mrs. Harris, who lost ten thousand dollars’ worth of reputation by the 'publication of a six line paragraph in the Gazette, informs us that his client is not the Mary Harris who figured la our police report yesterday morning. Ho far from his client’s name being Mary, it is Nancy
Jane.
JSTThe county commiaaioBers have appointed Richard If. Newcomb to distribute wood to the poor, vice James II. Drown, de- * Imed, on account of pressing business and Inability to get the books from Langadule. Mr. Drown was appointed without his knowledge or consent. Mr. Newcomb will keep bis office in the southwest room of the court house, ground floor, which is being renovated for hat putpose. ^ SILVER BRICKS.—Yesterday we noticed a number of bricks of pure silver, displayed in Bingham’s show window, on the comer of Washington and Pennsylvania streets. On inquiry we learned that they are from the Humboldt river Gold and Silver Mining Company. A gentleman from an adjoining county, who owns stock in the company, left them with Bingham. We should not object to being “come down upon” with a thousand of such bricks. ---<>--- ----->The city police and the Cocqulllards are having a row about the arrest of Um burglars who attempted Mr. Clarltis itf^. We don’t think there was a sufficient amount of detective skill displayed in the affair to 'waitdnt a quarrel for the credit <tf it. Apy'body can catch a thief if told when and where, he is going to steal. If the police will go to work and ferret out the organized association of burglars in this city, we will give them a puff. ---<>--- PLEASURE TRIP.—The steamer Governor Morton which has been thoroughly repaired and put in the very host condition, will ffioh* two trips to-morrow, starting from the landing just above the rlW bridge, at ten ©“’dock, a. M., and three e’ettiek p. M. The gallant Captain Soowell will wiBt the ^ukrtsfliech, and the aecommodaking* clbri, * P^L.’ •ftout will attend to the office duties. Tms Indianapolis I’kmalb Lnstitute. The dedication service of the new wing of the Baptist Institute took place last evening, and the new school room was well filled by an appreciative audience of the friends of education. ' ' ’ , The following was the order of exercises, and were conducted in a manner that reflect* credit upon the principal, Rev. C. W. Hewes, and his able corps of assistants: Chorus—“ Invocation to the Wind”—by the singing class. Prayer by President Benton, N. W. C. W. Hymn, “Home and Fatherland,” by the singing clast; after which the Bev.G. C. Heckman was introduced to the audience by Mr. Hewes, and delivered a very able and interesting address upon the subject of education, and the self sacrificing spirit manifested by the founders of the institution. Want of space compels us to omit even a synopsis of Ms reremarks. j bong, “ Now the Swallows,” by Miss Newton. Plana solo, Misses Robinson and Thomas. Duett, Misses Roeilter and Wessdhoeft. The Rev. Henry Day then gave a bricl history of tbe founding and progress of the Institute, which we will take pleasure in laying before our readers soon. Song—“ What Enchantment Miss Wesselhoeft. Closing chorus by the singing class. Mr. Hewes then returned thanks to those present for the interest manifested, inviting all to visit tbe school during working hours. Benediction by Professor Hoshour. We were very much pleased with the exercises throughout, and also with the neat and comm odious, rooms recently built, being three in number, yet so arranged as to he thrown into one with but little trouble, and with desks capable of seating two hundred and four pu-
pils.
The next term commences Monday, the 10th
instant.
The Metropolitan.—The theater was more crowded last night than we have seen it for many a month, on the occasion of Mr. White’s benefit. Parquette, dress circle, private boxes and gkllery were closely packed, and even the most ineligible seats were in demand. There was nothing remarkable about the acting, and we have seen Mr. White and the other leading members of the company to better advantage on many occasions. To-night the “Octoroon” will be repeated. It drew a fair house on its first presentation, and, we dare say, will draw to-night. jaTThe Ninth Rsgunant United States Veteran Volunteers now consists of ten officers and nine enlisted men. The rest of the enlisted men, having voted for Longsdale, have been discharged, and received transportation to their homes, where they will arrive in time to vote again at the fall election. They vote
well.
HjT John Finch and Randolph Roach have been admitted to practice law in the Circuit Court.
