COMMERCIAL.
NIonetarr Affaire in New York. New York, Apiil». The Commercial says the week opens with a decidedly easier aspect in money affairs. More money is bein# offered to prtvnto bankers, and there is n moderate demand for loans from brokers. On call the rate is C per cent., bul many decline to pay that, and the tendency strongly favors a 5 per cent, quotation. The discount market is easier, very choice names passing at G@6J4 per cent., but the supply of that class is very limited; the general rate for prime is per cent. There is a perceptible increase in the supply of produce paper, owing to purchases of produce in antuiipation of the opening of canals, the rate being 7>£@8}4 per cent. Stock speculation continues decidedly active, and is wholly in favor of higher prices. The miscellaneous list is stronger. Governments are rather stronger; 7-30’s are better. Gold appears to have been released from the artificial influences which have kept up the price for several days past. A large proportion of the outstanding shorts were covered last week, and on Saturday the result begnn to appear in a downward move, which is kept up. The morning price was $1 27%, and declined steadily to $1 25%. The rate on gold loans is 1-32^1-10 per cent,
per day.
Foreign exchange continues weak; the rate for prime banker’s sixty days sterling is 106% @106%—although drawers are asking higher flguers. Sterling common bills are quoted at 104%@106%. Sterling produce at 105@105%.
Francs at 632%@530 for long date. WEEKLY BANK STATEMENT.
Increase loans $5,287,664 Decrease specie 404,007 Increase* circulation. 300,527
