cTrr news, Amusemente title ETealn*. METROPOLITAN THEATER.—Benefit of Mr. L. L. Sharpe, Stage Director. Yeung' men’s Democratic Club. There will be a meeting of the Young Men's Democratic Club, at the editorial rooms of the Herald, on this, Saturday evening,at half past seven o’clock, for the purpose of receiving reports of committees, and the transaction of important business. Frank Cunningham, Secretary. yy There are ninety paupers in the County Asylum. _ J2T We regret to learn that Mr. O. B. Hord is dangerously ill. |3r Some splendid singing may be heard at the Episcopal church to-morrow, Easter Sunday. — B3* Governor Baker has gone to Evansville to spend the Sabbath in the bosom of his family. ^ ^ ^ Bayonets and slung shots are played out in Indianapolis. Democracy now has a show, and will show Itself at the polls on Monday. ^ ^ ^ ggy All in favor of an honest, careful and judicious administration of our local affairs, will go to the polls on Monday and vote the Democratic ticket. Pigeons.—We understand that Mr. John Bradshaw and a sporting friend yesterday bagged forty-two dozen pigeons. Pretty good for one day’s shooting. fly Merritt Reed, of Newton, Fred. Dickerman and William Eeith, of Warrick, and William K. Johnston, of Switzerland, have been appointed notaries public. I. T. U. No. 1.—Regular meeting at seven o’clock this evening, at the Hall, first entrance from Odd Fellows’ Hall, Washington street. Bodknhamer, President. BST There will be baptism of quite a number of the Sabbath school scholars connected with the Baptist Sabbath school, on to-morrow afternoon, immediately after the adjournment of the school. Religious.—Quarterly meeting to-day and to-morrow at Wesley Chapel. Rev. Dr. Bowman will preach Sabbath morning and evening. Sacrament services at half past three p. M., Sabbath. ^ USTThe street railway company talks of taking up one of the tracks on New Jersey street, and laying it down on Massachusetts avenue, in the proposed extension of the line to Fort Wayne avenue. To the Polls.—We urge upon every Democrat, and every opponent of the present corrupt and reckless local government the duty of being at the polls on Monday. Go early, stay late, and work all the time. J3T Major Gordon, as well as other parties, Informs us that our paragraph in yesterday’s paper, in regard to the difficulty between Mr. Houck and Mrs. Grau, misrepresents the facts and does great injustice to that lady, which will be shown ou the trial. !E2r General Pitcher received a dispatch from General Ord, dated Detroit, March 29, to the following effect: “ Men of the One Hundred and Twenty-eighth should be sent to the chief mustering officer at Indianapolis, as the regiment will soon be there for final discharge.” Mayor’s Court.—Mrs. Ann Chambers yesterday paid $29 70 for keeping a bouse of ill fame, aud Miss Belle Russell $14 70 for occupying the same. John McGinniss and John Aiken went to jail for being drunk and unable to pay $9 40. _ Metropolitan.—Mrs. Lander bad a good house last night on the occasion of her second benefit. The play—that grand old comedy, “The School for Scandal”—went off beautifully, which is all we have space to say, in the present crowded state of our columns. (I3r As soon as we have leisure we shall make another effort to extract some information from the Journal In regard to the vote by means of which General Veatch was swindled out of the nomination for auditor, in the Republican State convention on the 22d of February. _ Temperance.—Professor A. B. Benton, President of the North Western Christian University. will address the people’s weekly temperance meeting, at the Tabernacle, to-mor-row at four o’clock, P. M. The distinguished ability of Professor B. is sufficient evidence to insure a crowded house. Seat# free to all. JOT For the first time within some years a Democrat may go t6 the polls and peaceably deposit his ballot, with a reasonable assurance of living to see the sun rise the next morning. We trust that every Democrat will exercise the blessed privilege, made all the dearer by the reign of terror, now, thank (lod, passed away. • Benefit of Mbs. Hodges.—Mrs. J. A. Hodges, a careful, painstaking and favorite actress, always well up in her part, and thoroughly at home in everything for which she is cast, takes her only benefit for the season, on Monday night, on which occasion she will appear in two fine pieces. Aside from the splendid bill presented,’’the universal desire of our theater goes to testify their admiratiou of Mrs. Hodges, will Insure a full house. VST We received yesterday from the fruit house of Van Camp, Jackson & Co., No. 223 West Ohio street, a basket containing a choice lot of the finest apples we have ever tasted at this season of the year. This fruit has been most perfectly preserved in its original flavor, and is without that disagreeable earthy smell and taste common to fruits holed up or kept in damp cellars through the winter. This house also offers to housekeepers the best canned fruits and vegetables, at the lowest prices. |39“ The forty-third anniversary and closing exercises of the Church aud Sabbath School of the First Presbyterian Church, before leaving the house of worship, will take place to-mor-row. Historical church service in the morning. A Sabbath School memorial exercise at three o’clock p. M., and a general reunion gathering of all interested from early associations with the Church or Sabbath School, which was the first Sabbath School in the city, at quarter past seven in the evening—to all of which the invitation to those thus interested is made. ^ ^ ^ The Journal on Brimstone.—Yesterday’s Journal has a learned article on the uses of brimstone. It says: It is really strange that the learned Judge does not know the difference between brimstone and powder. The former is generally used for bleaching and purifying, while the latter is used for the purpose of destroying. We apprehend that the Journal man became acquainted with brimstone, not in Us most dangerous form, when combined with charcoal and nitre, nor in a bleaching establishment, but through a happy experience ol its beneficial effects, in combination with hog’s lard, as a domestic remedy for that troublesome cutaneous affection, politely known as the “ Wabash scratches.” Although he may, in times past, have been prompt enough to acme up to the “ scratch ” when his country Balled, we believe he has never been accused of “ ameiUng brimstone ” on the skirmish line. He may have been found at his “ post ” in the hour at danger, but the poet was one of those for the erection of which the Duke ol Argyle was blessed. Like that burly old buffer whose deeds are immortalized In Grubb’s famous poem, of a fit- Geoi^ge and the Dragon”— “ Brimstone he took inwardly As scurf gave him occasion, Till each * * * * * wae a Sulphurous exhalation.

Miaa Anna

Anna Dickinson, the gxeat female apostle of New England radicalism,TfoRvered her screed about “ The Assassination and the Suicide” at the Tabernacle last night, to a large audience. Miss Dickinson is a young lady, with short dark brown or black hair, a New England cast of feature, a slight stoop in the shoulders, and eyes of that intellectual gray which 1 is almost blue, by brevet, if we caught the color correctly in the uncertain twilight caused by the footlights being turned down, a fraud against which we enter our solemn protest*as we are sure that the audience paid their entrance fee for the privilege of seeing as wcll.as .hearing. She was plainly and simply dressed in some dark fabric, with a row of brass buttons in front, and, altogether, presented rather an attractive figure, considered limply as a woman. Her “reading” is correct, her enunciation clear and distinct, and her pronunciation quite stagey. The general effect of her declamation, however, is mechanical, but slightly relieved by gesticulation, and no mobility of feature, as if an automaton were speaking. We can not pretend to give even an outline of the “ pieco.” she spoke, which was a pale refrastion of Stevens and Sumner—abounding in false logic and factitious history—a little originality and a great deal of plagiarism—some pathos, plenty of bathos, and more than enough of egotism. That part of it devoted to President Johnson was but a tirade of gsnteel billingsgate, more becoming a pot house politician than a lady. She exhausted the vocabulary of bard names in the effort to impast to the Prasidcnt that particular merchandise which ladies value so highly, yet part with so easily—" a piece of

her mind.”

For one of the softer sex, Gentle Anna U unaccountably bloodthirsty. She upbraided’ President Johnson with having promised to hang liberally, and then failed to hang at all. She would rather have one single individual at Fortress Monroe hanged in reality than to have hundreds hanged on paper.] We see by the papers it is reported that Miss Dickinson is about to confer ber hand in marriage upon some unfortunate gentleman of the East. From the bottom of our heart we pity the poor devil, whoever ho is; for, after last night’s exhibitiou of her wonderful pnwera in the tonguc-lashiug way, we could not wish our bitterest enemy a worse fate than to marry her. If we mistake not she would prove equally as eminent as a shrew as she has proved successful in the role of a politician. Miss Dickinson has turned her powers to good account, we dare say, in a pecuniary sense, but we trust the example will not have

of the female persuasion from their spheres. An abundance of female lecturers would ruin the trade. It is the novelty that attracts, just as thousands would go to see a man walk, head downward, on the ceiling, who would not look at a fly in the same performance, though the; fly would do it much better. Circulating Vigilance. -The Republicans, under the prospect of something like a fair election, are becoming nervously apprehensive that power will slip away from their grasp, like the oleaginous caudal appendage of a greased pig. and are making unusual and desperate eflorte. The following circular, printed and sent to every Republican in the township, evidences thelrquaking terror. The Journal having but a limited circulation in the city, the party is reduced to the necessity of distributing circulars to arouse its membens tp a sense of tbe imminent danger which menaces it. Out of compassion, we print the circular, thus giving the party the lieuetit of our large and constantly increasing circulation. Indianapolis, March 2m, isfij. Dear Sir: Evidence exists that a strong and well matured combination Las been secretly formed to defeat the Luioa candidate for township trustee, of this (Center township,) at the election, on Monday next. AYe earnestly ask your active aid in waking up our friends, and personal influence at tile poll-. Very respectfully, Township unk>x Committee. The “ Township Union ComuiUtce ” U very right. A “strong and well matured combination ” has been formed, not secretly, but openly, in tbe hope o| overthrowing the corrupt party which has for so long mismanaged the affairs of the city. The “ Township Union Committse,” not contemplating the publication of the circular in the Ukuald, did wisely in not trusting to the limited circulation of the Jou nal, and in availing itself of the use of circulars. But it’s no use. The handwriting is on the wall, ami the Republican party will be driven to the wall, ▲ Oani, rn<>M »liw. Tti, ai ger, wife of Charles Draeger, writes us the following note. We made tbe statement on what we considered good authority, but Mrs. D. certainly ought to know best whether sho was beaten or not: Editor Harold: You have been misinformed in regard to the item in yesterday morning’s Herald, in regard to my husband abusing me. He never drew a revolver on me, and never treated me so that I could complain of him. You will oblige me vary'much by pub lishing this. Emma DrakGRR. t3T Judge Martlndale is temporarily presiding over the Criminal Court, Judge Coburn being sick.

Room No. 9, Exchange building—No. 33}£ North Illinois street. , 31-3 Renoon 'Wby.—Munson’s Lightning Rod supercedes all others: Because it is copper, which is the most powerful conductor of electricity known, except silver. Its tubuhtr spiral shape gives strength, and thus indicates tbe shape of the fulgarite formed by the electricity when striking upon the sand, indicating the form required. It is better than a copper rod four inches in circumstance, and it costs not one quarter as much. Its peculiar shape, with one aide left open In all directions to the atmosphere, admits the water freely to the Inner portion of the rod, Which ts ptttSBg but and in to such an extent as to annihilate the electricity that accumulates on the rod before It reaches the ground. If there is more water than electric fluid the charge is quieted atenoe on the surface. This point is worthy of any practical scientific person’s consideration, and certainly makes Munson’s Rod beyond a doubt pre-eminent above anything that ever has been used or known for the purpose.
