YeoterJay afternoon the principal time of the Stat Senat waa taken up in refrrenco to the reports tnaJe for tbe Heeald acd the Brevier Legislativ report. A word of pcnional explanation U made upon our part In juitificution of ourelf and tb reports that have appeared in tbe Ha a id. It is an olJ-tim dodge of men of mediocre Ul ant men who are fuller of impassioned declamation than plain and pointed argument to attack reporters and lay all tbe responsibilities for Inaccuracies of reports apontbe reporter himself, lieTer auppoaing, from tb nar-row-miodednws of their own construction, that the taking of sjoopsis reporU of proceedings is attended with jreit incoDTecteace, t well m difficulty, and tb imposaibilitj of making an accural report, and especially ao to an ineaptienccd reporter. We make no profession of being as competent and correct a reporter as a "ohort hand," bat we do claim that we bare nerer willfully misrepresented any gentleman in all our reporting, and neither hare we ever, on any occasion. s far forgot the datier of ouretation as to descend to a personal attack on any man, Ten be he one of the "assembled wudom of tbe Stat. W confess our inability to report a epeaker rrrlatim, and arrange their figures and tropes ia as fjstematical and engaging a manner as they are gen rally presented, and if that nattering unction baa found its way to tbe aoul of the "gcutlf man from Rush," w abjar bim to dispel it. "Miserable inefficiencies and inaccuracies" miy occur, but wdiclim any willful misrepresentations of any member on our part, and would take it as a personal favor if geullemcn would ose a little moderation and dignity in pointing tbena out, and we will with pleasure make the proper correction. On tee whole, we have known some reporters with as much ability to diacharge tbe duties of their proleiou, as a certain cla of men, who, by some unhappy accident, became entrusted, in part, with tbe legislation of tbe St kte. We my be excluded fromtb floor of the Senu a a reporter, as it appared lo us ytsterday oo etlator was a little anaious to see done, but In that evnt we ball ierci our Democratic prerogative, and take op our p!a-e in tbe lobby, along with, other plebeians. Tbe busiaen of attacking reporters may b, in lieu of others, a good eutject on which to drill tbe oratorical powers of aspiring declaimerv; but we doubt if any other advantage will ercr be derived from such cmJ. We hav tb columns of the II. raid. th "gentle- . n t- .i-ii man from Ruah tb floor of the benate. and if ( w are attacked in aa u:.juit mtaner again, J we shall moat a.urcl!y take advantage of our i position. The W'urlT $ Washington lip:itch savs: 11cjHrtsjut re-eiel at the Treasury feartin lit from agents stationed along the Canada frontier, show that Miiuirlin is still carried on very largely. SVlzür- are loa- eoiistantly. The Indui eiiH nts are so great that if one-h ilf i- -'ot the parties are aniplv remunerated. An agent, who arrived h-re to-ilay, says smuggler have beii unusually active curing the lat two or three months. The Tiuua's wcial say: Hon. Freemen Clark, Comptroller of Currency, is engaged uion hN report. He w ill reeotümcnd the removal of the National Currency Bureau to New York. Mr. McCulloeh, w ho made tbe same reeommendatioii when Comptroller last year, will probably rcuew it in hi forthcoming reiort as Secretary of the Treasury. Yesterday the Government refunded the tirt money from the proceeds cf the sale of eontiseated property, in pursuance of section seven, act of March Sd, lsoo. In tbe case in which the money was refunded tho claimants and former owners of the confiscated property show that thev w ere loyal citizens and supporters of the Union, notwithstanding the fact of abandoning their property at the breaking out of the rclM-llion. The land is located in Alexandria, Virginia. A large number of like cases are pending. The Herald special says: Yesterday was the time for receiving bids for tbe contract of the mail service for Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina and Florida, expressed and formal, awarding the respective contracts to parties whose rates had leen accepted, and is now under way. Contracts about to W consummated for service in the alKjve states t go into effect the tirst of January, lsia;, and expire in Juue, lso7. Bid made for this service were largely in excess of rates formerly In vogue for the same routes. The Secretary of the Treasury has issued a circular notifying all collectors of internal revenue that he'regards it but a just precaution that wherever applications are made for the storage of h trob uia or other products, within the limits of a town or city, the collector should forward to the Treasury Department a statement thtt the warehouse, if established, will, ill CUse of lir, onliiir.-r -iilivr property or the liv.w of p.t.plc li ing or doing busim-s in the Aicinity. G. to Buruside, who was ordered to the Pacific ('oast two years ago, as he alh-jres, to prevent his testifying against Uuitt, then about to le tried at Cincinnati, is preparing to bring his case before Congress, und promise much additional light on that interesting subject. Touts' Washington special savs, the statement that the Secretary of the "Treasury intended to discourage all female clerks in his department, is erroneous. Admiral Porter will soon publish a replv to General UanWs strictures on the conduct of the Navy in the lied River campaign. Colonel Henry Pag?, late Chief Quartermaster on General sUcridan's staff, has been ordered to Arkansas. Tho Times sj)ecial says: Antoine Rosa was convicted at the October term of tbe United states circuit Court for the District of East.orn New York, for counterfeiting fractional currency, und sentenced to ten years' Imprisonment, and was to-day pardoned by the President. The Tiiitts ieclal says: The President was more than usually annoyed by unfortunate reconstructionists yesterday, lie remarked that be had tried to overwhelm the South w ith pardons and kindness, but from recent events he ls gan to think them incapable of appreciating magnanimity. several cflorts have lx-en made to force a beligereiit construction upon the action of the Navy Department in ordering off certain United states ships.
