M., the attendant at tbe sale of Government animal, at tbe old Fair Ground, were ttartlcd by hearing the cry of "Murder," and repairing to the locality of the outcry discovered a otalwart Teuton, a blacksmith bv profession, anj (Jeore William by name, tw-laboring a man named Lcwellin Jon with a two pound hammer, lie knocked Jones dow n and then jumping ujou tbe protrate man commenced grinding hi face with hi boot hnU. He tiucceedetl in so dUflirin tbe hrlple man' face that hi oeai menu woum nave raueu to reco-'uize him. We aw the parties at the Mayor's Court where a hearing waa in progress. The wouldbe man-butcher testified that Jone had insert el tU hand In his pocket, and that he there fore believed his leign was to steal hi money. Jones stated that he and bis assailant were friends and were in the habit of practicing pUy ful tricks on each other, and that he was merely jokin? when Ik put his hand in his pocket. We incline to the belief that tbe blacksmith i possessed of an ungovernable temper and th:it hi assault was wholly unjustifiable. Certain it is that, even if Jones intended theft, still that could be no excuse for o brutal an a ault. The matter will be further considered before his Honor the Mayor to-day. Temperance Lectures. E. II. I'niae, Esq.. of New York City, addressed the citizens of Indianapolis, and the MemUrs of the I-:isla-ture, on Teraperauee, Monday evening, at the House of Representatives. His fqx-ech was cne of the K-st w e have had the pleasure of listening to for aoine time. He is a model teni perance speaker, very unlike (Jomrh in bis manner and tvle of poaking. We are eonYlnced that all who heard him were more than pleased, and after be bad iokcn one hour and a half, the audience appeared anxious to have him continue. His argument SU1 apical to the legislators and ladies met with entire ajrrobation, at times eliciting almost cealc cheering. We hope the Temperance Commit tee will lose no time in their endeavors to pro cure him to speak at the Tatcrnacle some time this winter. We can speak for a crowded house. It is understood that Hon. .Matthew It. Hnll will speak at the Mass Met ting, on the subject of Temperance, on Wednesday (to-next.) to le held at the TaWrnacle. Mr. Hull need no introduction, be is well known to the public. We learn that the house will le warmed comfortably, as usual. tJTThe renian met ting on the 13th instant was larpJy attended, and a very interesting lecture was delivered by Mr. James Unnnan. Mr. U. i a pleasant and somewhat forcible speaker. The purport of the lecture w as that Irish mancipation i a feasible thing. He pointed out the rauc of former failure, dis cussed the power and resources of England. gave reason for faith in the present movement and appealed f.r aid to tbe cause. What was needed to insure success was men and inonev; the tuen were at home, and tluir friend in America were called on to supply the money.
