Oot of the most terrible tragedies that art were Tar caliai on to narrata occurred la thia city at belf-paat tun a o'clock l&at night, at tba rapiden ca 01 Ii. W . Greene, Uta rreaicact of tba Connect! cut Fir a Insurance Company, Mr. Oreeoa baring ceased tba death of bia wife by catting bar throat wun a razor, and then attempting bia awn life. Tba facta aa brought out bafore the coroner' jury wert aa follows: Mr. and Mra. (iraene were In the' bouse alone. their daughters and a nepbew having left there about hall-put 7 o'clock, there bing at that time nothing unusual in the appearance of Mr Greaoe. At half put 'J o'clock Mary Johnson, JJ.na roster, and itobert Uibba (colored), lieory Kennedy and b. t. Cum coin es, on their way from church, were within a few rod of the resi dence, when they beard the cry of murder. Mr. Kennedy a id that as soon be reached the front of the home be saw Mrs. Greene standing by the -front parlor window, which was open, the blood streaming from her neck, lie ran into the room and said; "Mrs. Greene, what Is the matter?" She re plied: "Mr. Greene his kill me; be hae escaped! 1 ou woq t nod him! At ber request Kennedy ran for Dr. Uerc?ford, who came immediately, tot she was dead on his arrival. Marj Johnson, aa intelligent colored woman, followed Mr. Ken nedy into the bouse. Mrs. Greene remarked that ber htubanJ bad cut ber neck, and ajked to be helped op stairs. Mra. Johnson and Misa Foster helped her up sttirs to ber room, andaa ehe psed inside tne door, remarked:"! am faiat!" and fell to the floor, when sbe soon ex pired from loss of blood. The interior jugular rein on the right side of the neck was cut, the wound being Tery deep and extending from the ear to the chin. Mrs. Greene remarked to Mar? Johnson thit ehe bad been afraid to stay with Mr. Greene all the evening, but none of the members of the family were knowing to this fact. Search was made for Mr. Greeue about the premised, but It was supposed that be had escaped. While waiting for the Coroner, officer Hoti summoned a jury, conflating of John Ii. Kl d rid ire, A. X. Clark, Collins btone.Olcott Allen, S. A. Hubbard and S. Mather, who were about attending to their do tie, when it was stated that the door to Mr. Greene's room was locked and the key on the outside. This was a quarter before eieren. The room was entered by a side window, when a terrible sight presented, itself. Mr. Greene was lying on a sofa, with bis right arm rcsi.ng cn a chair, with an open razor by his band, and etil I alive, but scarcely any hope that be could lire but a ehort time. He bad cut a deep gash on the right eide of his neck into the tricoid cartallary, making an opening into the mouth. There was another cut on the left side of the neck, and one across the left arm. He bad bled profucly, was partially sensible, but could not articulate distinctly. Urs. Heresford and Russell dressed bis wound?, and when we left at 1 o'clock be was tili alire, but with very little hopo tn.it he could survive. It appeared that Mr. Greene was nit: in; by the centre ttble reading the "Knightly bldier. when ber husband came up behind her and cut her throat with & razor, then ran up stairs, locked bU door, laid down, and deliberately made the attempt at bis own ule. Mrs. Greene ran aero the parlor, opened the front blinds and window and cried murder, as we bare previously stated Blood on the leaves of the book indicated that it was open at chapter serea. Ever since the death of Mr. Green's daughter he has been very low-spirited, and for months has given evidence of insanity, and bis friends have bad fears that be might do himself injury, but did not antici pate irjury to ethers, lie attended church yes terday, aud alter service in the afternoon, walked some distance with bis son-in-law, Mr. Day, con versing relative to his own matters, and the state of his health; but there was nothing in bis appearance then or at the time to indicate tie thought of harm to himself or bis mends. The finding of the jury was in accordance to the facts above narrated. Mr. Greene was a man about sixty-six, we should judge, and was possessed of considerable wealth, lie leaves two daughters, one married. We have no heart at this time to comment on this awful tragedy, the most terrible in all its aspects that it was ever our lot to witAaizosa AMU So so aa. These two States one under the Hag of the United States, and the other under the imperial banner of Maximilian, are, says the rniladelphi Ace, both rich in natural advantages, and may yet be the theatre of great event bearing upon the destiny of tbin nation. I be reported cession of the border State of Mexico to Napoleon, though not veri fied by positive facts, ttill rests upon sufficient testimony to warrant a belief that such an ar rangement has been made as will at any time justify the Kmperor of the French in assuming lull ownemhip ot that portion of Mexico which borders on our Southern line. Sonera, which seems to be the headquarters of French influence ia thit region, coQUioa about 140.000 inhabitants. These are chic fly the descendants of the A pit a Indians and Spaniards, and are a weak ai d docile race, that can be pushed aside quite easily when the time comes for French colonization. Sonor is a beautiful country, watered by several rivers, and was lormeTly called "Sonora the liich." The Sierra Madre range of mountains which rues through 11, is veined wita pold and silver, which at the time ot the Spanish Conquest, in 1103, amounted it was thought, to $400,000,000. The country has been desolated by years of misrule and anar chy, but at the prestut time things are assuming a moro tranquil aspect, aud the position that Nonor is to occupy ui the coming struggle between French and American iufluence on this continent must be an important one. The rival State ot Sonora, the one which must act as the breakwater against French machinations, is Arizona. This State was formerly a portion 01 tne empire 01 JWexico. It was ceded to the United State after tke war with Mexico, for the consideration of $1 0,000 ,000, paid under the stimulation of the Gadsdsa treaty. Arizona contained ia lrid a population of 10,000, exclciive of.Itdiatis. Since that lime the population has increased very rapidiv. Arizona was explored br the Spanish Jesuits "as etrly as 16s7; and the Valley of the Satta Cruz, one ol the most fertile iu tae world in agricultural products, boasted of a hundred river mines. The climate is variable, ia some portions delightful witb valleys rich m agricultural resources. The mineral resources ol the Arizona re apparently inexhaustible. Iron, copper, silver and gold are lound in all part of lie Sute,ai)d iu l5v9 a plumbago mice was discovered within ber territorial lisn.ta. Thee advantages will naturally attract a hardy and entcrrritir.g population, and thus the State will soon be iu a position to represent in aii elEcient maimer American interests on the Uio Grande. In the presert conjunction of affairs on our Southern borders e should extend a helping hand to a!I who may be dL-poid to settle in tht region. If circumstances fhould render it expedient to enforce the Monroe doctrine, the more densely our frontier States are populated the better it will be for the intends ot the United States. France will look to Ur iuerest ia Sot ora; let us cot forget Arizona. SIcKernan&. Pierce, REAL ESTATE lOf Firit Door K;it of Palncr Honse (UP STAIKS.) Near the mouth of Coal Creek, where the Company has large quantities of lands salt water has been diiwoTered equal in Quality to the Kanawha. This water was pro cured some 35 years ago by boring.
