Mr. Editor: This "cradle of rebellion," (-to-called,) does uol appear to have suffered much from the war, except what waj caused by fire. llusiceH is at lever beat; everybody appears to be on a dead run to make up for lo?t tinie. 1 have never seen Cincinnati, Chicago or Louisville more alive with busine? than this city $ at this time. I notice considerable building, or rather repairing building", coiii on. All that part of the city hooting the Charles ton Hotel and running towards the railroad depot appears to have ecaped the shells thrown into the city. The hotel, and many other buildings had abella to go through them, but not exploding in them did litt! damage and the holes were poon patched up. Not o between this hotel and the Mills Hou?e, nearly all on both sides of the etre t being knocked into mortar. How the Mills House escaped 0 we'l. is a myetery to me. The visit could not but bring to mind the grand and powerful debate between the leader of the bolter, William L. Pugh, who, if I recollect rightly, by the force of his logic and tacts, forced the' tire eaters to admit that bis ( Yancey V) doctrine "wad a ?tep further than the Democracy ever took before," while in bis powerful ppeech, just closed, be was tryicg to prure that hi$ Lew ideas bad always been the doctrine of the Democratic party. Poor Yancey I though grett in intellect, bad to answer, as all will have to, to a higher Power. Genera! Howard is now in the city, trying to do something with his frecdmen. He has his hands full, and i am inclined to thick, from what I have ?een and beard, he is anxious the Legislature should take the 'job off his hands. Some care little about the matter, and remark at time, "Let Howard pound away ; somebody will get tired as poon as we will." Your very interesting letter of the 2Uth tilt, was received the day I started to Columbus to witcess the last act of the farce which originated last summer, The vulgar and malignant malcontents who caused my arret and detention at Columbus for seven weeks, Iat summer, had begun to feel the load of infamy thev have incurred.
