Jlnrdcr Alfuir lit Oiirida ('ouiit , ;eiv lork-1 nil 1'urttctiliar. . from the Utica Herald, Nov. 1 The ruuoH upou the street which tret gained currency about noou yesterday, to the effect that a murder had beea committed in the town of Siugerfield, near the village of Waterville, were not without foundation. Ueorge W.Looaiia had been murdered in hu own houe, and the life of his brother drove n.iiled in 8uch a manner that his death is not improbable. 1 be oi l homeste.id of the Loouies, and the houe where the murder was committed, is a tutntantil Hppeitrin two-story structure, in the village of NNaterville. I he house u one in which the family have resided forty years, and is upon a valuable farm of from three to lour hundred acres. The family upon Tuesday the day of the murder conis'wted of Mr9. Loomi, her four sous "Wasih," drove, Denio and Fluni Cornelia, a daughter, and five or tix laborers or dome.-ticn. We leim the more immediate facU in connection with the murder to be as follows: Betweeu one and two o'clock yesterday morning the family wtro awakened by hearing men walking through the wood house and kitchen. They heard thtm po to " Wash's" sleeping room, hituated on the South side of the houfO, ground door, and one of them call out, "det up, Was-h, I want to eo you." The men then retreated, and in a few momenta they heard "Wash" go to the kitchen in his stocking feet In a tew moments the family heard the men go up etairs ai d call to Grove (whose idee ping room was on the tecond story) "Urove, get up." lie answered that he would, and in a short time did to and went down to the kitchen. Immediately the cry of murder was heard and a ecullie. The d.iughter, Cornelia, her room being down etairs), now went to the kitchen door and demanded admittance, at the fame time endeavoring to open it. She was met from the inside by a tnnn with a pistol, who throateued to shoot her if ehe did net et away. This) man ehe ia positive she will be able to identity. She retreated, in the meantime hearing cries from ineide the room. Ai thia juueture Denio and iMuni ran to a neighbor's Edward MaoD, residiu about half a mile north for instance. The struggle going on in the kitchen eoon ceased, aud Cornelia ventured to return. She found Grove fcenscleaa upon the door, with a grain bag, containing a tew oats, which had been saturated with some inflammable fluid, and which wa on fire, lying upon hia body.. Several articltv of clothing also, tanging about the room, w-pre saturated in a similar manner and on fare. Other garments, in like condition, bad been thrown into the wood box. V ith the aid of the family the Ü tines were t-oon extinguished. (rove was horribly beaten, and, we believe, shot. A large broken revolver, afterward found upon the premises, is supposed t have been the instrument with which the deed was done. Grove, upon being removed to another room, was found to be couacious, but a new calamity wa row difcorered. The large barn opposite the boae (built upon the site of the one destroyed a year since by incendiarism j was dicotertd to be on hre. The barn, together with six or seven valuable horses which it contained, the estimated value of some of them being i-,0(Jl, was consumed. 1'poa returning to the houe, search was made for "Wach." He was found lying ia a woodshed, back and west of the kitchen, in sn unconscious state, covered with blood, and so badly beateu and dishured that, by hi countenance, they were unable to recognize Lim. There were two or three fractures of the skull, his eye were wollen from the blows he had received, and his enure face terribly lacerated. He remained in an unconscious state until coon yesterday, wncn he expired. Dr. S. U. Walcott, of this city, who Lad beea summoned by the family, arrived at the bouse a few moments after tte "death of "Wash." He gave it as his opinion that "Wash" came to his death by blows from a slung shot, and the fact that such an instrument was found upon the piexi ei would appca? to be conclusive proof. The doctor, we understand, also pronounces Grove's case very critical indeed. He fears that inflammation, of the brain may set in and death ensue. "Wash" Loomie was forty-ihree years of age, and Grove ii some thirty-fire. Both were small men. but strong and athletic .Member ot the family express themselves as confided of beisg ible to ideality some of tie assailants, of whom they thick there ware five or six, aid rumor has singled out this and that onaitie murderers. Tte suspicion In many
case, investigation of the farts lead us t believe, waswhollv without fonndation. An opinion can te much more correctly formed af ter the Coroner's impest and when time and reason shall have bad their effect. ' li is cot oor province at this time tri apeak cf the character which the Loomie lamilyoore with their neighbors, or in the county. Murder is seldom justifiable, and disregard of just laws, never. Thrre can be no excuse for thia horrible deed, though winked at pxibly by popular sentiment. Tlrmberi of the Indiana Leg laiaturr. gfcXATE. Ce-nrad flaker, President cf the Senate. Al'.Uen. James Y. David Dale Owen, late State Geologist, will show that these lands are aituate In the midst of the finest eoal fields of the State, abounding alao in aalt, iron and other valuable mineral substances. Near the mouth of Coal Creek, where tbe Company has large quantities of lands salt water has been discovered equal in quality to the Kanawha. This Water was procured some 35 years sgo by boring, soon after, the Onondaga salt finding its way down the Wabash and Erie Canal, Mr. Thomas, the proprietor, finding himself anable to compete with It, abandoned the manufacture. Ia his boring he encountered that which recently disclosed facts prove te have been coal oil. These lands ail li in close proximity to th Wabash and Erie Canal, some of them upon Its banks. Mr. John McManomy, the business agent of the company, Las retumed from a tour of observation of the oil regions of Pennsylvania, convinced that the lands leased by the company, In Fountain and Parke counties, has, so far as the general formation of the country and the aurface Indication, preaent themaelv.a, a stoog analogy la tbe oil and mineral substances as found on French Creek, Pennsylvania, where the greatest quantity and th moat valuable oil is found. Mr. McManomy has purchased for the company the mot approved machinery, with aril the fixtures necessary for operation, and Is preparing with experienced workmen the speedy development of the hidden treasure of the lands of tbe company. All tbe indices of coal oil, found ta localities where It has been procured, are strongly marked In various localities of the laods of the Company, affording every rational prespect wf success. Th company thinks It annecessary to make any other reference to th character of tbe lands, other than the report and map referred t. 1 100,000 of the stock, being l,0oo shares, Is proposed by the Company t be offered la the market at on-Lslf lta par value, heiLg f 25 per share, for tbe purpose of aiding the Cempany la a speedy development of tho lands. apfS-diwtf THE INDIANAPOLIS INSURANCE COTIPAiV, Is now permanently organized and ready te issue Fire Policies.
